http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/d ... abs-794872Stephany Folsom has been tapped to pen the script for The Princess of North Sudan, Disney’s unique princess tale inspired by the true account of an American man claiming a territory in Africa and proclaiming himself and his family its royal rulers.
Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker behind documentaries Super Size Me and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, is producing the family adventure along with Richard Arlook.
Princess tells of an American dad whose daughter asked if she would ever be a real princess. That question set the man on a search for a region in the world that was disputed, eventually finding a territory named Bir Tawil, an area between Egypt and Sudan. In June of 2014, he flew to the area, planted a flag and, calling it the Kingdom of North Sudan, claimed it for himself and his family.
The studio is focusing on the relationship between the father and daughter set against a backdrop of a fantastical adventure.
Folsom is best known for her 2013 Black List script 1969: A Space Odyssey or How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon. The drama earned high marks in its alternate history telling of a publicist that convinces filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to work with NASA in order to fake the moon landing.
Folsom is repped by Verve and Kaplan/Perrone.

So, will it be live action or animated? I hope the latter. The story sounds fantastic, perfect for an atmospheric adventure film.

Considering that Sudan has been in a civil war for 12 years and 2 months with an estimated 450,00 casualties I think this is easily the most insensitive and retarded idea for a movie in recent memory.
I know the US have trouble identifying other countries on a map and that the majority of Americans rarely leave their own state, let alone their country, but this truly borders on insane.

Clearly live-action. If it was animated, we wouldn't know for a year or 2. It seems like you don't know the story. Look it up why this is very foolish and insensitive. Will Barks wrote:So, will it be live action or animated? I hope the latter. The story sounds fantastic, perfect for an atmospheric adventure film.
Disney needs to know just because there is a princess in the project or it's a fairytale-themed movie doesn't mean it's always apporiate to do. What's next? An animated musical about Princess Diana?

Re: Disney's 'Princess of North Sudan'
The reactions I've seen to this are sort of infuring. Everyone seems to think that Disney is just one huge monopoly with writers who work on both live action and animation. So, people are blaming the animation team for this horriblly insensitive LIVE ACTION idea being optioned, and acting as if the LIVE ACTION white African princess will become a part of the actual Disney princess lineup.
Jesus, I mean I know that Disney is a "racist" scapegoat, but to critique a product, you should step back and look at the whole picture.
Disney animation is not all of Disney. Some people really ought to learn that businesses are not individual people trying to oppress others.

Funny that you're saying that. Cause I remember in the reading about a animated musical adaptation about Princess Diana from Disney in the late 90's. And it's true. Unfortunately I can't find any references for it now, but I do remember it.disneyprincess11 wrote: What's next? An animated musical about Princess Diana?

The screenwriter has actually responded to the accusations levelled at the project and actually agrees with a lot of the criticisms, saying they won't take the story in that direction.
As laid out by @THR article I can understand why you'd be upset. Rest assured that is NOT the story we are telling. #PrincessOfNorthSudan
Agree w/everything people are saying. Wouldn’t write that story. But if you want to focus your hate on me, go for it.
I’ve been to the Sudan. The people there are amazing. Colonialism is bullshit. Hope you all have a beautiful night.
Honestly, I feel like the trades slanted this to create controversy.
There is no planting a flag in Sudan or making a white girl the princess of an African country. That’s gross.

I remember reading it in a Norwegian newspaper in the late 90's. But it could be just a rumor, haha.

Yeah, I looked everywhere. Sadly, Disney would do something like this now. But, back then would be WAY TOO SOON and disrespectful and insensitive.Sotiris wrote:I've never heard that rumor before. Indeed. And according to the article, the film was originally going to have a happy ending with her dancing around her kids (it's true).disneyprincess11 wrote:Yeah, I looked everywhere. Punching the "evil prince" Charles who was using her for "evil reasons"?
(All in seriousness, what else did the article say about the movie?)

Re: Disney's 'Princess of North Sudan'
If Disney really wanted to tell a story that took place in the continent of Africa and it used people instead of animals, then why can't they either tell a whole new story, adapt an African tale, or set one of the fairy tales they haven't done (like The 12 Dancing Princesses or The Princess and the Pea) in an African kingdom? It's like they are almost scared to make a movie set in that continent. Trust me, people would love it! To me, this movie sounds like something that will offend some viewers. In Cinderella, one of the princesses that was presented at the ball was Princess Imani and she was from Zimbabwe. Her costume was so beautiful, and she was beautiful herself! Characters and costumes resembling Princess Imani would be splendid to see! Even the Zamunda scenes in Coming to America would be a nice blueprint for Disney if they wanted to make a movie set in Africa.

Why does everyone have to be so sensitive about everything?

I thought this was one of those Onion articles at first...
I dont think WDFA would go anywhere near a story like this, considering all the scrutiny they get about race.
Of course live action shouldnt touch this either. Then again most of their target audience wont care...white wealthy soccer moms who think spending $1000 on an Elsa costume is perfectly sane.

Re: Disney's 'Princess of North Sudan'
^Exactly, unprincess. All they are seeing is "PRINCE$$, PRINCE$$!" I can literally picture the cutesy, wutsey trailer that teaches girls that they can become princesses if they have money and no respect for other cultures.
It is very sad what the live-action studios is becoming: Nothing, but a desperate-money maker. They're making nothing, but either Star Wars/Marvel (which they bought to make $$$), remakes of their own movies to be like, "HEY, THIS VERSION IS BETTER THAN THE ONE FOR BABIES!" (TBH, I don't mind if the remakes are good, like Cinderella), and now an insensitive movie like this. I'm starting to lose respect for the company in general. How they're treating Disney's legacy is pretty disgusting.
I'm really glad WDAS, the heart of Disney, got itself back together because I would not know what I would be doing with Disney now.

What about Aida? They were revisiting that a few years back until they decided to make it a live-action movie (cancelled)tsom wrote:If Disney really wanted to tell a story that took place in the continent of Africa and it used people instead of animals, then why can't they either tell a whole new story, adapt an African tale, or set one of the fairy tales they haven't done (like The 12 Dancing Princesses or The Princess and the Pea) in an African kingdom?
