"Weird Al" Yankovic Disney Special?

Post by drfsupercenter »

As a huge Weird Al fan, I actually had no idea such a thing existed.

But apparently it was called (There's No) Going Home and aired on the Disney channel years and years ago.

Was this ever released in any form? I'd love to see it...

I love this special. The whole idea of it was a parody of a Disney Channel series at the time called Going Home. These specials were usually documentaries about the act they were spotlighting on that episode with songs from a recent concert at points. And for many of the concerts, they were taped in an artists hometown. It's kind of funny to think that there was a time when the Disney Channel ran a show with Fleetwood Mac candidly discussing their drug abuse. LOL.

Weird Al's episode was about him finishing up his tour and looking forward to going back home to his family (his parents at the time). And with his title, (There's No) Going Home, you can imagine how things turn out. If I remember right, the concert footage was taped in Vancouver during his Bad Hair Day tour.

The special as a whole was never released on VHS or DVD. But I think we got a live version of every song featured in that show on the "Weird Al LIVE" DVD that he recorded during his next tour. They're not the same exact performances as the Disney Channel Special; but what he does with those songs on both tours is the same. So you're not really missing anything.

The footage of Al heading home and meeting up with his family was included as an CD-ROM extra on Al's "Running With Scissors" album. I don't know if you were to buy a new copy today if it's still included. But I know it was when the album was first released back in 1999. If you can track a copy down, I'd recommend it. It's some funny stuff.

I figured as much, as far as it never being released anywhere.

I don't suppose anyone here happened to record it off the Disney Channel in some form? I've got the equipment to digitize VHS tapes (in fact, I have a former TV station S-VHS player with built in time base correction, tl;dr it's better than your average machine) if someone has a tape sitting in their basement they could let me borrow

I did tape it back when it aired and am pretty sure I still have it somewhere. When I have the chance, I'll have to see if I can find it. If I do, I'll definitely let you know.
