2014 Winter Olympics

Post by Walter »

Well, the Winter Olympics have come, and I always get glued to the TV more than usual during this time, watching sports that I don't normally watch.

Just watched the opening ceremony, and thought it was good. Though I was expecting so much more since there was all this talk about spending so much money on it.

Now off to watch the competition.

I thought that the opening ceremony was done very well despite a glitch or two in the beginning. The choir was great and the use of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and The Firebird; also Swan Lake's music was used to a perfect combination of sight, sound and performance. The torch lighting was the biggest eye opener for me and the effects used were really nice.

I did watch a bit of the ice skating last night. I thought the young girl from Russia's skating was very beautiful (wish I was that flexible :o ), although I was surprised the girl from Italy didn't make a better score than her... And I was a little shocked that the girl from Japan who fell made a score higher than the US girl. :?: She kept going after the fall very well and I believe she might've got the highest score otherwise.

Well, the team program in figure skating ended on an anticlimactic note, as it was already determined who would win gold well before the ladies and ice dance free programs. Something with the scoring system has to change, because while the performances are great to look at, there is no impact in the final scoring.

With so much to watch, I will have to pick and choose.

There was one that won gold in speed skating.

I don't think it's much better here, in the 4 major sports, as there still has not been an open gay athlete still playing. That may change in the NFL, but I have to wonder, if the coaches and owners are willing take the same stance as Vince Lombardi with gay players.

I, for one, am not giving any support to these games. The Russian government can go straight to hell as far as I am concerned. And anyone who doesn't think the Russian governments' pogroms against gays are that big a deal needs to do more fucking research.

Hm. So I guess openly gay athletes can compete and win at these games. I still wonder if Russia's preventing anything in these games, though.

Is anyone actually watching the Winter Olympics?? The ratings are down, and viewership is at the lowest peak, heck, even The Beatles 50th Anniversary Show rated higher than all of the eight hours of Olympics on Sunday night combined. Tells me that Russia is definitely not the place for an amateur sporting event.

I "expect" countries hosting an event that is suppose to be about brotherhood between the nations to not violate human rights. Call me crazy. Add to their fascistic scapegoating of gays the fact that they were POISONING all the stray dogs in Sochi to 'cleanse' the city for the games and the Russian government doesn't deserve a lick of support, endorsement or applause from any decent, civilized human being. I would be saying the same thing if the games were being held in Uganda. Or Jamaica. Or any of the backwards Middle Eastern countries.

Well, men's hockey has finally gotten underway, and already a very good start for the US, as they destroyed Slovakia. I ended up turning it off after the 2nd period. Next game should be a good one, against Russia.

That downhill ski course was just scary to see. And all this talk about how warm it is in the Sochi and how they worry about not having enough snow, makes me think, Elsa is needed there. :)

Men's short program has been completed. But I won't say more in case you want to find out in prime time.

No, more like nobody really cares for the Winter Olympics. It's the Summer Olympics people go apeshit for. Russia has nothing to do with it. Russia is one of the best countries at winter sports events(along with US and Canada).

Nah that title goes N. Korea.

I would've thought some country in the Middle East would win. It is a place where a woman can be killed for reading/learning/thinking/looking at a man/showing her face or body/disobeying her husband.

Although Russia is technically the "greatest" in size.

@Prof.Ratigan: Tbh, I don't watch the Olympics much at all. I just randomly tuned in because nothing was on and ice-skating is okay. I probably wouldn't have watched if I thought my not watching would matter. I'm not part of a Nielson household.

@SuperAurora: I agree, I prefer Summer Olympics. Especially the swimming/diving for the eye candy.

I would have thought the same thing as well.

I normally prefer the Summer Games myself, but have grown to like the Winter Games as well. Granted, it does not have nearly as widespread appeal as the Summer Games, but I find it enjoyable in its own way.

N. Korea executes people(or sends them to camps) just for even simply disagreeing with anything GLORIOUS KIM says. They also have a thing called generational punishment meaning that if someone commits a "crime", not only do they suffer the consequences, but their families and then even their future generation off springs/ descendents as well.

N. Korea are pure traditionalist at its finest. And they take extreme pride in it. Almost all Asian nations are like that though. Part of their cultural ways.

Middle east is bad but it's no N. Korea. People in N. Korea are starving(and brain-washed) at much worse condition than anything much of the middle is at.

Oh, I know all too well with the cultural ways of Asians, having grown up in a Korean household myself. But that's a discussion for another time.

Getting back on topic (well, sort of), here is the Winter Games video by AVGN...
