Great detective work! That's way more titles than I would have thought.
For me, iTunes 1080p is just outside of what I would consider the safe zone for Blu-ray transparency (it's about 5Mbps, ideal would be 6-8).

I agree. I think Blu-ray HD 1080p is currently better than iTunes and Amazon Instant Video HD 1080p. Not to mention the uncompressed surround sound.

Of course, not all of the films will necessarily get a Blu-ray release, and so it's nice to know that we can download a copy which hopefully looks better than DVD or VHS.

Just looked at two of the titles for curiosity sake. Both were 720p HD, but maybe that's Canada only.

The Happiest Millionaire is clearly the same transfer as the DVD, complete with soft picture and white specks, but Family Band looks much better than the DVD. Hopefully more of these will come to Blu-ray soon.

Edit: just checking Hercules and it says 720p HD for downloads only, 1080p is just rent.

Yes the list is based on the US iTunes store, and I haven't actually tried to download them all myself. I'm also guessing the HD 1080p transfers are not newly remastered. The preview clips of each film are certainly not in HD.

In regards to the HD 1080p part, it may or may not be your iTunes store. I suggest you double check your iTunes settings to make sure you can automatically download HD 1080p if available. To do this:

1. Make sure you're running iTunes 10.6 or higher. If not, download it.
2. Then open Preferences. On a Mac, this is in the iTunes menu. On a PC, it's under Edit.
3. In the Preferences window, click on Store.
4. Look for the option for When downloading High Definition video, prefer: and click the drop-down. Select 1080p.
5. Click OK.

Yes the list is based on the US iTunes store, and I haven't actually tried to download them all myself. I'm also guessing the HD 1080p transfers are not newly remastered. The preview clips of each film are certainly not in HD.

Thanks for the list, though the numbering is kind of confusing. Maybe because I'm not really familiar with Disney's Live Action flicks. It be cool if we can do a list with just the DAC's.

I just bought The Emperor's New Groove 3 days ago and I've been watching it through my AppleTV (I can't get enough of it). As for the quality, it is definitely 1080p and it looks really good. I checked the file info, its about 3 and a half Gigs with a bit rate of 154 kbps, total bit rate 5705, so this will definitely hold me off until the middle eastern stand alone blu-ray is released and I can import it. I was so tempted to buy the DVD at Best Buy earlier this week for 14.99 because I haven't watched this movie in years and knew it would be longer since I am planning to boycott that horrid 2-Movie Collection release. I opted to pay 3 dollars more for the HD version instead, its not a hard copy but I can live with that knowing it will always be in my iCloud. Another reason I went this route is because I share my itunes account with my family since we all have AppleTV's. This morning I got a text from my lil sister saying she was watching Emperor's New Groove and was so happy I got it. So I believe I'm getting more out of my purchase and def more use than the DVD would've ever gotten. I'm SOO tempted to buy Hercules now! But I know that one is coming without a sequel, so I'll just have to wait.

Anyone on the fence about purchasing through iTunes should def try it.

I don't own these titles on DVD myself or via iTunes so can't comment. However, if you view the trailer, you won't actually see a trailer. Instead you'll see a clip from the film and that way you'll be able to compare it yourself to your own DVD version.

Family Band looks to be 1.66:1 or 1.78:1 widescreen based on the clip shown. I'm tempted to get it too because the DVD looked so rotten.

It measures 1.66:1, and you're right, the difference between the DVD and this mere sample is like night and day. Makes me wish a Blu-Ray release were coming since I don't use digital downloads.

Jesus that looks brutal. I haven't watched my DVD recently, but wow that's bad.

Looks like there's more image at the top and bottom though. itunes print is probably what was seen in theatres (if under-matted), while the DVD is some weird half-open matte thing. It's The Rescuers situation all over again.

Regardless, I'm glad a better looking, mostly-accurate widescreen image is out there.

I'm one of those movie buffs that mainly wants films in HD on physical media. Sure it'd be a lie if I say that I avoid pure digital media, but I don't want to deal with the use of the internet all the time, especially since me and my family have been collecting classic films on physical media (whether VHS or DVD) over the years. ... Disney, why are you not motivated enough to release them all on Blu-ray? (and from reading the posts here, it seems some are... up-converted HD masters? ... okay, better make new masters, then.)
Also, I'm not always satisfied with the pricing. Why pay 20 dollars (not always true for all films.) for iTunes/Vudu HD copy when I could get more with a combo pack for a few dollars... or even better if the Blu-ray/DVD were on sale? And it's harder to share the films to your friends and family if it were pure digital.
... wait, why even bother buying it digitally? It's easier if you create your own HD file! (hoo-rah!) But if you want them straight from Blu-ray, it's a complicated process. (oh.)

I agree, the price is bad for what you get. It should be $10 not $20, but I find a number of things overpriced on itunes (like $40 for a SD TV season I could get for $20 on DVD at Best Buy).

I rented Oz because it's a personal favorite of mine and they pretty much just dumped the existing 2k master on there, debris and all (and there's a lot of it). $18 is far too much to get just the movie in a relatively low-bitrate format.

I love Return to Oz too. Thanks for the feedback. Also, the preview doesn't appear to be in the correct 1.85:1 ratio- is the film?

I think with the amount of home entertainment layoffs recently, and the fact that they don't seem to have really strong Disney fan advocates who really know about the films and products working in that department, the type of master you described could very much be the best we get for some time.
