The 10th Kingdom

Post by AwallaceUNC »

Ok, I searched and only found where this has been mentioned in passing, but not really discussed, so please don't kill me if it's a repeat :).

Has anyone here seen the 10th Kingdom? If so, what did you think? It's one of my all-time faves, and it involved a lot of the stories that are used for Disney movies, so I'm sure a lot of you would like it.

I love T10K! It's great! Scott Cohen did an excellent job playing Wolf.

The original script(or the book, I should say) was a lot better, though, but I still enjoy watching the mini-series even though it was so LONG! :) :) :) :)

Ohhh!!! I love that seven hour movie! I watch it ALL the time! ahhaahah, it's so good!
My favorite character is Wolf, like most of the people in the world! Has anyone read the book? Does anyone know if there will be a sequel? Can anyone get t10k.com to work?

Yeah, I've watched it probably around 30 times or so. I've read the book too (the book was based on the movie, not vice-versa). As for a sequel, the script is being worked on, and a lot of the cast has agreed to likely come back, but there are some problems with financing and contracting, b/c it was made by several companies and it didn't do so well on the TV airing. But it's built a huge cult following and DVD sales did well, I believe, so a sequel is 50-50 at this time. The guy who wrote it (Simon somehting, I think), also wrote Dinotopia, and is pushing for a sequel.

Scott Cohen was great, but so many fans make it all about him, and not about that movie. The rest of the cast was incredible too, esp. Diane Wiest!

There are lots of T10K message boards. I have a 10th Kingdom Fan Club and a Street Team. I hardly ever have time to even go there any more, but the co-founder (don't know her personally) of it works really hard on it (particularly the fan club), and it's a fun place to go if you want to chat. You can access both at http://kingdomclubs.tripod.com EZBoard has some good T10K boards that I'm technically a member of as well.

I haven't tried the official website lately, I'll try it and let you know if it works tomorrow (too tired tonight, it's 2:30 am! lol)

I read an email from Scott Cohen recently(Not to me, but to a owner of a site devoted to him), he said something about the script. That it stared him and his family! The only thing I wonder...are the trolls going to come back? I just can't imagine the 10th Kingdom without the troll children, I really, really hope that there will be a sequel!

About the book, the book IS the script, the movie is based off of it. Notice that the swamp witch is ClayFace in the book, and Acorn in the movie, the whole Magic Fish thing it really different. Read the first few pages of the book, and you'll find that the book was just made for the casts use. But after the 10th Kingdom did so well(Well, really it was Scott who made it popular), the book was released with pictures of the movie.

Yeah, I noted those differences too. Perhaps I have a different book than you, but mine is an adaptation of the script so that it reads like a movie. So in essence, it is the script, but it's adapted from (or based on) it.

Should I add spoilers to the top of this? We're flirting with them here.

I could do with or without the trolls.

10th Kingdom DVD

Post by Kram Nebuer »

GAAAAHHH!!! I've been trying to access the "Find the 10th Kingdom" on my 10th Kingdom DVD. The only thing I've found that seems close to it is the explanation of the 9 kingdoms and in one of the pages, there is a mirror with the NY skyline. I can't click on it so is this it? If so, it's kind of pointless if you ask me...like finding the deleted scenes on the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone DVD. :x

(I'm gonna spoil the "Easter Egg," so beware)

Kram,

I'd never tried doing this before, but I popped in the DVD just for you. On the map of the Kingdoms on Disc 1, move your cursor over the 4th Kingdom. If you hit down again, the yellow cursor will move to the south-west tip of the 4th kingdom. There's no label there, so it will look like an Easter egg. Click on it, and there's the hidden 10th kingdom. (P.S. this may be the most pointless special feature I've ever seen, so don't get your hopes up).

Thank you, Aaron! Aw, shucks, you didn't have to do it just for me... :) . You were right. I looked for it, found it, read the screen, and was disappointed. I was expecting something that silly and pointless anyhow since this was an early DVD.

The 10th Kingdom

Post by Kraken Guard »

"Rare! Rare implies dangerously cooked. And when i say rare i mean just let it look at the oven in terror and bring it out to me! No fries, no vegetables, just MEAT! Red as a young girls first blush!"

Has anyone watched The 10th Kingdom? It's about a girl named Virginia who lives out in New York with her father, Anthony. When Virginia goes to the resturant she works at one day, she accidently runs over a dog with her bike. The dog is fine and she takes it over to work. While working, she hears the dog barking and comes in to check on it only to find out that it had dumped a bag of flour onto the floor and spelling out "Danger" to Virginia's surprise, she notices the dog understands her.. After a few events unfold ever since the dogs arrivel, events involving trolls(who refer to New York as the 10th Kingdom) and a wolf who falls in love with Virginia on first sight, she and her father discover a portal in the woods which is actually a mirror to the realm of the nine kingdoms who were once ruled by Cinderella, Repunzel, Snow White, Red Riding Hood and the like.

Meh, i couldn't do the summery any justice. It's a three part movie (Or a mini-series, im not sure which ) and it's based on the stories of Cinderella, Repunzel, Snow White and Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and various other stories by the Brothers Grimm. I think you'd find the 10th Kingdom very interesting and fun to watch (Ending is a real tear jerker though, just to let you know) So, anyone else seen the 10th Kingdom?

Love it! Did you just watch it? I remember watching it 10 years ago (what! how is this even possible?) on NBC. It's the only miniseries I've ever watched! I want a sequel but that's not gonna happen. Don't expect too many posts after mine. It was low rated and ten years later it's almost wholly forgotten. Good to know it still has us devoted fans though.

I'm a huge fan of The 10th Kingdom! I've watched it countless times, have read the book, and used to co-administer an online fan site and discussion forum (now defunct)! There are some other fans here too -- the New Jersey Trilogy, I believe, among others. You can search around and find some past discussion.

Rumors of a sequel crop up every now and then but nothing ever materializes. The odds are ridiculously low of any kind of follow-up even being considered, but stranger things have happened!

Haha, we are! Kram and I were actually talking about it a week ago as he was still looking for the novelization in used book stores (he doesn't want to buy one online).

I remember when it was first on, the whole family watched all five parts each night they were on. When NBC repeated it a few months later, they condensed it to three parts, which Kram taped to VHS, but that was eventually replaced by the DVD when he finally bought it in 2004.

During my college program in 2005, a friend of mine invited me to her "10th Kingdom" marathon with some friends, in which they'd watch all five parts (on all 3 DVDs) in one sitting, breaking only between discs. I wanted to go, but I had a shift during the entire marathon, and so I couldn't. :(

The NJ Trilogy been meaning to have a "10th Kingdom" marathon (something we haven't done since...2006, I think), but due to its length, we never get around to it.

Indeed, it would be great to see a sequel for 10th Kingdom :D Although it may not be such a good idea at the same time.. Look at some of the Disney sequels  Of course, i do like the Disney Sequels. I loved Rescuers Down Under and Beauty and the Beast: Enchanted Christmas and the Aladdin sequels, but i'll save that for some other time.. But yeah, it would be cool seeing a sequel for 10th Kingdom :)

Bummer the 10K Forum is down. Would have been interesting to join it :(

10th Kingdom was originally a five parter? :o Dang.. :o

Would be cool with the 10th Kingdom Marathon though! :)

The 10th Kingdom

Post by Disney Duster »

I saw the original 5-part airing...and loved, loved LOVED it. It was so exciting. It was one of the most exciting things for me...every preview made me feel...so much...

I loved everything about it. To point out one of so many things, I loved how Cinderella was still alive and saw past appearences, but didn't like her orange gown. I guess orange makes sense for pumpkiness.

After the series was over, my mom found the official web site for it where you could explore a map of all the kingdoms...but the site was defunct, because the series was over, and I don't think it exists anymore.

I read online that the original VHS tapes cut footage. So I'm mad because those tapes are all I have. I watched them recently either a year or two years ago, and enjoyed it all immensely again.

So, should I get the 3-Disc DVD? I heard a 3-Disc and 2-Disc came out, and the 2-Disc had a making of. Is that all that's missing on the 3-Disc? Can I still get the 2-Disc? Do both releases have all, all of the original footage?

A 6-Parter now!? Dang, never knew it was that long!

That would have been cool to see the map of the Nine Kingdoms!

I wasn't to thrilled with the orangy color of the dress either.. Although, like you said: Makes sense for Pumpkiny-ness! Never really thought of it like that..

As for if the DVD's have all of the original footage? Im afraid to say im not sure. I never even knew that there were scenes missing and im not sure or dont remember if there are any scenes missing. :(

The original airing took place over five consecutive nights, a two-hour (including commercials) block on each.

Technically yes and no.

It's "Yes" as it's all the footage from the actual story/movies. Everything that was seen in the initial NBC broadcast as well as the original three-tape VHS. The two-tape and one-tape VHS releases were obviously cut.

It's also "No" as the credits are cut from the following:

*Part One - missing end credits, has the opening credits
*Part Two - missing opening & end credits
*Part Three - missing opening & end credits
*Part Four - missing opening & end credits
*Part Five - missing opening credits, has the end credits

Most of Artisan/Hallmark's DVDs for their miniseries's do that in order to present the thing as one long movie. Thankfully, most other studios don't do this on their miniseries releases (North and South, The Thorn Birds, and The Winds of War come to mind) The only example from Artisan/Hallmark I know that does *not* remove the credits to make it one long movie is Lonesome Dove, which presents all four parts as their own, whereas its sequels are all credit-less save for the very first and very last. Interestingly, when the rights to the Lonesome Dove miniseries, and its sequels, went to Genius Products/Vivendi Entertainment, they presented *all* of them as-broadcast, split into four parts (Lonesome Dove and Return to Lonesome Dove) and three parts (Streets of Laredo and Dead Man's Walk) each.

In addition, Artisan/Hallmark also removes the on-screen credit text (stuff like "Executive Producer: Name, Director: Name, etc.") on the actual opening shots of each part (after the opening credits). When I first got Scarlett on DVD, I compared it to my VHS (a 1998 repeat on CBS) to make sure that no footage was lost, and saw that the text was all that was removed.

Usually it's fine if this is a two-part miniseries that simply becomes a less-than-3-hour movie. But when it's a multi-part saga like The 10th Kingdom, I usually get annoyed that they try to make it seem like one really long movie only separated by discs.

Oops, I meant to write 5-part.

Thanks everyone. Though I still want to know if that means that both sets had all that footage Scaps mentioned, and if it's possible to get the 2-Disc set with making of somewhere.

Also, some time ago Wikipedia said that the writer of the series wanted to make a sequel that focused more on the Little Red Ridinghood mythology, and that the first part of the series was more about the Snow White mythology. I feel like it was already so much about both mythologies...but I guess they never entered Red's kingdom, or the others (did they?) but I was hoping and excited for many sequels each particularly dealing with a kingdom and it's mythology, so eventually they'd get to Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
