Disney Channel planning Boy Meets World sequel series

Post by Kyle »

I kid you not, Girl Meets World.
The Disney Channel is in the early stages of developing a Boy Meets World sequel series called Girl Meets World, TVLine has learned exclusively. Sources say that the cable network is trying to land original series stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel to revisit their roles of sweethearts Cory and Topanga, who married before their ABC sitcom ended its seven-season run. The new series would center on their preteen daughterl

Be still my heart. :o I hope this pans out and actually turns out good. Boy Meets World was and still is my favorite show of all time, I hope they dont screw this up. I'm a bit skeptic as the original series was intended for network tv, and being on ABC gave them the freedom to touch on more mature themes. Would the show be dumbed down for the Disney Channel demo?

I think it would be better suited for ABC Family myself. They could get away with more and probably last longer there. Maybe the exact channel is still up in the air?

I wonder what the odds are that they'll use the name they came up with for the baby they had in the non canon "what if" look into the future in the prank episode "seven the hard way". Her name was Beverly Glen.
Beverly Glen and Topanga are both streets in the L.A Area/San Fernando Valley, so it would actually make sense in a way.
Here's the scene Im talking about to refresh your memory.

This in intriguing, and very unexpected. Given that Disney sold Boy meets world to lionsgate.

I remember being on this road in 2003 on my Make A wish Trip to see Roy E Disney. My dad didn't know what Boy Meets World is/was, and he starting singing We're Riding on Topanga, I busted a gut laughing.

Oh... God.

Well it's not like Cory and Topanga are busy. Last I saw of her was a funny or die video in which she mocked her own career. She'll gladly take that role I'm guessing.

I thought they just sold the DVD rights to Lionsgate.

Anyway, if they bring back the original actors, I'm absolutely onboard for this. Besides, it's not like their careers really took off, after the show ended (except for Will Friedle, who has done really well as a voice-over actor). Hopefully this turns out to be good.

I dunno, I was always hoping for a reunion movie with the original cast, but a whole new show for the Disney Channel demo, with the characters barely factoring in? That doesn't sound too promising.

I know that Michael Jacobs is the one who's interested and trying to pitch it, so maybe he can help the show maintain its original magic, but I have a right to be skeptical, if Disney's recent output is any indication.

Really? How do you know this? because if it was his idea that makes me a lot more confident in the whole thing. I was worried it was just some new guy, but if its Michael I think with his sensibilities the show could be pretty good.

Yes, a part of me agrees with you, I would prefer to see something that brings as many old cast members back as possible, but on the other hand I think today's tv is sorely lacking in long running genuine shows about life like Boy Meets World, the Wonder Years, etc. There just doesn't seem to be that kind of show anymore, so even with a focus on this new character I'm just glad that something like it could be back on tv again. I just hope they try to match the tone and stay away from whats currently plaguing Disney channel.

I found it in at least one or two press releases announcing this show, but I can't remember which one on the top of my head. I'll come back and show you which ones when I can.

All the articles Ive seen on it so far just cite the TVline as the source, their the same thing but reworded. Its possible someone jumped to that conclusion on their own. I hope Its true though. The guy knows the heart of the show more than anyone else would.

this. On all fronts. Disney Channel has a bad rep to the point where i'm skeptical simply because it's about their *daughter*. I hope if anything, they try to keep the original sets or something close to them and not have those sometimes garishly colorful sets they usually do.

And is Micheal Jacobs the Creator? Either way, they'll have a hard time matching the length of the original which means fewer b stories. More commercials

Well you dont really need any of the original sets, as they already moved out of philly and went to New York. But Im with ya on the general set design. I hope they look like actual places. I tried watching a few mins of good luck charlie, the sets are god awful. Even the lighting takes me out of it. Everything about it screams "this a set". The original sets looked so real I thought they shot on location for most of the series.

No, "kid gets acquainted with universe". But seriously, I think the current title "Girl meets World" is fine.

This better have Feeny in it, or at least will have him popping in every now and then.

Well here's one article stating that Jacobs at least signed the deal up.

Whether he actually did or not, I sure hope that he has at least some involvement in this show.

I'm pretty sure this series'll only work if Feeny, Eric, Cory's parents, and Shawn are involved (as cameos now and then at least). I would almost say Feeny needs to be a fixture on the show, considering he followed Cory and co. to college and everything. He was on Grey's Anatomy last year, I believe, so I'm sure he's still available.

The last thing I saw him in was in this fake trailer.
(not safe for work)
Warning you may not see feeny the same after this.

We thought it might be too good to be true, but the "Boy Meets World" sequel series "Girl Meets World" is moving forward -- in fact, Disney is casting the pilot episode as we speak.

The pilot will be executive produced and written by Michael Jacobs, who served as executive producer of the original series, and it's set to start shooting in February. There hasn't been any official confirmation as to whether Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have signed on, but given her playful tweets and the fact that it's moving forward, we can say the chances are very, very good.

In a flash-forward sequence in the original series, the show hinted that Cory and Topanga would have a daughter named "Beverly Glen" -- but in "Girl Meets World," we'll instead be introduced to 13-year-old Riley Matthews.

Here's how she's described in the official casting breakdown: "13 years old, indelible personality, an adorable girl on the cusp of whatever comes next in life, and wanting to rush into it head first. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and spends most of her time juggling the obstacles that life throws her way... there is no obstacle in this girl's world that can dampen her bright spirit and eternal optimism."

Sounds pretty good, right? In the series, Cory and Topanga also have a 14-year-old son, Elliot, who is a bit of a know-it-all when it comes to bossing his kid sister around.

Oh -- and did we mention that Cory is a seventh grade history teacher? Specifically, Riley's seventh grade history teacher. We always knew he'd follow in Mr. Feeny's footsteps.

Just as Cory had Shawn, Riley has a thick-as-thieves BFF of her own. We can't wait to meet Maya, Riley's best friend -- who is different from Riley in every way. She's a pessimist, and described as "darker and less trusting" than Riley. She's never known her father, and even though she's not a good student by any means, she looks to her history teacher, Cory, as a father figure. She's described as having "acerbic wit" and being "absolutely magnetic in attracting or intimidating the people in her sphere as she cares to. Dark and edgy, but just as fiercely loyal to Riley as Riley is to her."
Dissapointed they didnt go with Beverly just as a little nod. But oh well.

Im surprised they gave her a brother, wasn't expecting that. Wonder if this might help make sure the show doesnt skew too girly, give it some balance?

Cory as a teacher? I never would have predicted that. I could easier see Eric or Feeny even in his old age as a teacher. None the less, things are getting exciting.

Some fans are already speculating that Maya's father will turn out to be Shawn.

No longer just a rumor, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have officially signed on.

Also, from Danielle 's Tumblr.

First of all, let me say that you, the fans of Boy Meets World, have been awesome. That word is often used incorrectly by people, including myself, on a daily basis but you have truly been awe inspiring. You, yes, even YOU, are the reason that Girl Meets World WILL BE MADE. J

I do not know how many BMW cast members will be returning for GMW, or how often they may appear if and/or when they do appear. I am going to do my best to not speak for others with this open post. But because I have known Michael Jacobs, Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, and Bill Daniels for 19 years, I know we share many of the same feelings regarding the 7 wonderful years we spent making BMW. Those years were among the most warm, hilarious, insightful, educational years of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. Another thing I wouldn’t trade for anything is the integrity and the heart with which BMW was made. I promise with the entirety of my heart that we will make GMW with the same honesty, innocence, and intelligence that you learned to expect from BMW.

I say this because making the decision to do the show involved more conversations than you can possible imagine. These conversations were with the same people I mentioned above because they were all instrumental in creating and maintaining the heart of BMW. The first comment out of every person’s mouth was, “Let’s only do it if we think we can create something as special as we did with BMW.” When the news leaked that GMW was in the making, literally days after I first heard about the project myself, Michael Jacobs and I had a conversation and we talked about how we were both so blown away by the reactions from all of you. We felt honored. We felt nostalgic. We felt touched by the excitement in your comments, tweets, Tumblr, and Facebook posts. But most of all, we felt inspired. We felt inspired to bring these characters back to life and to tell you more of their stories. Michael said to me, “Danielle, when I read what people say BMW meant to them it makes me so very proud of all of us. I think it is important for us, for as long as we are fortunate enough to have this opportunity to do GMW, that we all look each other in the eyes every so often and make sure we know we have something of value to offer the audience.” I think we have that with GMW.

I say that so that I can say this: GMW is a new show. It isn’t BMW brought back to life but in current day. It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages. It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages. BMW never spoke down to the audience and we are going to do our best to never do that with GMW. But please keep in mind that this there will be episode 1, of season 1, of a brand new show. We started at the same place with BMW but we evolved and we evolved quickly. For those of you who knew and loved BMW, please allow this show to evolve as well. Stick with us. Give us a chance.

In the meantime, a sincere thank you to every one of you for all of your tweets (I read them all, every day. It killed me not to be able to talk about it!), even those of you who asked us not to do it. There were only a few of you but I know why you don’t want GMW to happen and I appreciate that BMW meant enough to you that you don’t want to see its legacy tarnished. I can assure you, we don’t want that either. Your love, dedication, and appreciation means more to us than you could ever know and it will be the driving force behind our passion to make the best show we can possibly make. Thank you for giving us the chance to do it again.

Love,

Danielle
