Several doubts regading DVDs and Blu Rays

Post by DC Fan »

Hi

I´m new here.

Living in Spain. Upgrading my Classics to Blu and making the DVD collection to a friend.

My nickname means that I´m a huge DC Comics fan.

So, can you help me with these questions?

1. Is Disney going to ever release Atlantis in widescreen format (Region 2)?

2. Why The Fox and the Hound hasn´t been released in Europe in Blu Ray yet?

3. Is it true that The Rescuers will eventually become a Blu Ray?

4. So, read the news about Pocahontas and possibly Tarzan. Two movies that already got nice DVD treatments. But what happens with Hercules and Hunchback?

5. And what´s the order of the rest of the Platinum list?

Thanks

Hello I'm Christopher :) welcome

While I'm not sure about Atlantis & Fox and the Hound, the Platinum list is:

Snow White
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Aladdin
Bambi
Cinderella
Lady and the Tramp
The Little Mermaid
Peter Pan
The Jungle Book
101 Dalmatians
Sleeping Beauty
Pinocchio

As for The Rescuers, Hunchback, & Hercules, each of them has yet to be released on any 2-disc edition/blu-ray :/ ..at least in the US

You mean it wasn't released in widescreen for Region 2? When I think of how many films are not released in their original widescreen over here in the US but are in the UK, to then hear this really makes me wonder what they hey is going on? That's crazy! I'm really sorry to hear it.

(Shameless plug) I just posted a poll on the very issue of aspect ratios on the Open Vault Disney Facebook page. If you have a few seconds, please fill it out, we will be directing it to Disney. In the mean time, I thank you for pointing this issue out. I mean, if the Animated Classics can't be treated well on DVD or Blu-ray, what hope do any other Disney film have?

Thanks.

But I made a mistake. What I wanted to ask was about the order of the Diamond line.

When it was originally released there was the option. I mean, they sold a widescreen and a fullscreen version.

However, for unknown reasons they discontinued the widescreen one and kept the fullscreen.

And I wonder why did they do that.

I asked around and was told that these fullscreen versions are discontinued. However, there are tons of them.

...and, when contacted, Disney never makes an estatement.

But they did in fact release the widescreen version originally? While still odd only keeping the fullscreen one out, at least it's not what I thought it was originally.

Knowing that, I'm sure that whenever (knock on wood) the Blu-ray is released, that will be widescreen. But who knows when that may be?

As if they never released it in the first place.

That was in 2001.

It´s 2012 and the widescreen version is discontinued.

PS

Thanks Christopher. So, kind of the same as the Platinum. But, what happened to Aladdin?

^ No problem. Yeah they're recycling the Platinum editions with the exception of Aladdin. I read Aladdin Platinum edition didn't sell very well which I'm not entirely sure how accurate that is, but that may be why it was cut.

I've got my fingers crossed for a release to coincide with it's 20th anniversary next year but I'm not holding my breath or anything.

-On a sidenote Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 were going to be a part of the Diamond line but was dropped and released as a "Special Edition"

In the UK , Atlantis WAS available in widescreen but it was only the Collector's Edition set - you can pick it up on ebay & Amazon. Similarly, Sleeping Beauty was given the same treatment on its first release here.

I'm pretty sure Atlantis was also released in widescreen in France.

I'm just lumping these together. As long as Blu-ray is still the new format, I have no doubt at all that all of the DAC's will eventually be released on it. As far as what aspect ratio might be used, that's hard to assume but I would think that Disney would try to release the most they could of the actual film on blu because otherwise it would seem like a waste.

I have a feeling that over the next year or two Disney may stop releasing new DVD's all together. So, I wouldn't plan on investing in new Disney DVDs.

I have no idea why it hasn't been released yet, but I would have to come eventually. Maybe you'll just have to wait a year like we did for the Dumbo release.

As Christopher has already answered, the Diamond list is supposed to follow the Platinum list. However, it appears that the list has been changing since the Diamond Edition's inception. Aladdin and both Fantasias were dropped from the line, and rumor has it that 101 Dalmatians might have been as well. At this point, it's hard to tell what will be Diamond and what will not. I almost prefer it that way though, because I didn't love the idea of both collections being identical.

Like I said above though, I believe that as long as Blu-ray is a profitable format we'll most likely see all the DAC's on blu. whether or not they are Diamond doesn't really matter as long as they are good releases overall.

Thanks for welcoming me.

Well, I hate the idea of Aladdin (being my favorite) not being Diamond anymore.

Sorry, but I don´t believe that one of the most porfitable animated movies of the 90´s just became forgettable.

If anything, Disney is the one to blame.

As I don´t recall tons of merchandise when it was released as Platinum.

Besides, that doesn´t mean they had to kick it out just because.

However, that´s just because of that. However, I do know it will be released in Blu Ray anyways and seeing how bad the last releases have been in contrast to their Platinum counterparts they don´t deserve the title anyways.

As for Hunchback and Hercules I can´t believe the fact that they´re going to release Pocahontas and Tarzan on Blu yet the aformentioned films that never got an actual nice release on DVD are not given priority.

And regarding other titles that can´t be found in Spain are:

Make Mine Music, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and Piglet´s Big Movie. :P

Make Mine Music was only offered uncut in Sweden I managed to buy copy on Ebay not long ago.

1. Is Disney going to ever release Atlantis in widescreen format (Region 2)?

Well you are correct, my region 2 Atlantis DVD is in Academy Ratio (Full Screen). Which would be an pan & scan verison a result of improper treatment 2.35.1 CinemaScope (Widescreen). I have no Idea when Disney will use the proper ratio in Europe Importing from USA might be good Idea if you have region fee DVD player. But I have no clue when blu-ray might be coming.

2. Why The Fox and the Hound hasn´t been released in Europe in Blu Ray yet?

You could always import and I the blu-ray is region free

3. Is it true that The Rescuers will eventually become a Blu Ray?
I have no Idea, but I would expect Blu-ray at one point in the future. What exact ratio will we get I don't know.

4. So, read the news about Pocahontas and possibly Tarzan. Two movies that already got nice DVD treatments. But what happens with Hercules and Hunchback?
I have no Idea, but I would expect Blu-ray at one point in the future. For all of these.

Make Mine Music was only offered uncut (the region 1 USA is cut it doesn't inlcude The Martins and the Coys sagment) in Sweden I managed to buy copy on Ebay not long ago but the seller is long gone it seems so I'm not sure were you can find it now. The other two you can find the in region 2 format on Amazon.co.uk

I've heard nothing about it being released in the UK but I just got it imported from the USA. It may come out in 2012 tho.
