Walmart's Halloween movie racks?

Post by Barbossa »

Anyone happen to know when Walmart is gonna roll out their Halloween movie racks? Last year I picked up a bunch of movies that were just $5 apiece. Hoping to pick up some more movies this year that I haven't seen yet.

I am not sure, but I saw some Halloween movies around Meijer, a local chain of stores in my State. Some of the films were the Legacy series version of Dracula for 19.99 and the 1943 version of The Phantom of the Opera for 9.99.

I think they may bring them out when Back to School settles down, so... maybe next week or the week after?

Man, I think I stopped cruising Wal-Mart during Halloween sometime in 2006. I was really disappointed too because they had a specactular selection from 2002-2004. But, ya know- I never thought of checking the $5.00 bins. If I were you, I would check only about once every week starting maybe next week. I'm going to try to get there too if I think they might actually be putting some new horror discs in the big bin. Last time I was there, I almost picked up the 4-pack of Phantasm II, Funhouse, Sssssssss, and Serpent and the Rainbow. All widescreen, Universal DVD (so the quality would have been pretty darn good). It was like $4.00. Even though I already have Serpent and I outright hate Phantasm II- that's one HELL of a deal for the other two movies.

thanks Laz, that was what I was going to post also.

Back-to-school is almost over and the next big thing should be the Halloween stuff.

With nine Wal-Mart stores here in Wichita, I will be starting to cruise those $5 bins at least once a week beginning this weekend and see what "gems" I can find.

I picked up that 4-movie pack just for "Sssssss", and "Serpent and the Rainbow", I am also not fond of "Phantasm II". Great quality transfers and they are anamorphic, so I am a happy camper.

Don't just look thru the $5 bins. Don't know how it is in the states, but here in Canada for almost every holiday that has some form of gift giving they always roll out a special rack with movies related to that day. Gonna go there this evening to see if they rolled out their Halloween-specific racks.

A Lot of times the movies in these racks are cheap. A lot of the movies were new releases just a few months before and are significantly reduced to around $10. A lot of times I kick myself because I get movies as new releases, then Walmart rolls out these racks and the movies that I had bought for full price are down to $10. I noticed Rob Zombie's Halloween II at HMV the other day for $5. I got the first one last year at Walmart for $5 - not the greatest movie though, that's all it's worth is about $5 (the original John Carpenter one is still a classic). I don't have any Friday the 13th or Saw movies so I'm hoping they show up.

The Father's Day movie racks were great. I got the pack of the first 3 Rambo movies for $12, and the 4th Rambo for $5. 8)

I got Serpent in the 3-movie Wes Craven pack back in like '04. For some reason, I just had to have it. Likely the reason was familiarity over actual love of the movies, since Shocker is as bad as it is.

I didn't get the 4-pack though because I'm still a bit broke, I also don't much care for The Funhouse, and I haven't seen Sssssss yet. Even though it's on Netflix: Watch Instant- I'm just that lazy.

Looked around one of the local Walmarts. They already have Halloween junk out, costumes, decor, etc, but I didn't see a Halloween movie rack yet. They do currently have a Back to School movie rack with some Disney movies.

Here they don't have the racks, they have a special standup bin that has the signage for "Back To School", "Valentine's Day", or whatever the event, so I was just at my closest Wal-Mart and the empty 'holiday' bin is currently out, but empty, so they are getting ready to load it up. I would say by this weekend, they will have the bin ready for the Halloween season, because they have it right in the middle of all the Halloween costumes, and other things having to do with their Spook-tacular sale.

These are the bins/racks I'm talking about. They always roll them out for some holiday or special event where people are bound to spend money. Usually good deals in these displays. And usually they have some Disney movies mixed in them.

What I'd really like to see are the MGM horror discs from like 2005, one of the last years they wheeled out a bunch in August. I really need to get From a Whisper to a Scream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRQBgNbdikc (warning - some nudity). I just hope the DVD quality is better than Netflix's Watch-Instant version (just ABYSMAL!). It would also be nice to see some Lionsgate discs. I need The Wraith special edition and the Parents/Fear double feature.

Of course, I doubt our Wal-Mart will have anything. Keep me updated you guys on what your WM's have if they set up for Halloween before mine.

I'm going to stop by Walmart on Friday and see if they have rolled out the racks yet. Should be any time now as more and more Halloween stuff is showing up in stores. I'm hoping An American Werewolf in London shows up in the racks this year.

Oh, that reminds me, I can finally use my pumpkin carving set I bought for $1 at Walmart on after-Halloween sales last year. 8)

For how much? Before the 2-disc Edition was released, WalMart used to have a "double feature" 2-pack of the special editions of Werewolf and Cat People.

Oh no! I gotta get "Sssssssss!" I think I have the other flicks but if its that cheap, it'll be worth it!

**UPDATE** I don't have Phantasm II, so I think I will be tracking this set down.

Walked thru the electronics and Halloween sections and no sign of Halloween racks yet, however...

They just rolled out racks that say "Anniversary" on them. Don't know who's anniversary, Walmart's? Anyway have a look thru them. Lot's of movies that are $5 and $10. And... I did find "An American Werewolf in London" 2-Disc for $5!

And speaking of Halloween movies, I noticed at Zellers they got a bunch of Disney movies wrapped in a in a special Halloween slip case with Pumpkin stencils - so, Halloween movies are starting to show up.

I was just in Walmart getting an eye exam done at the optical. While I was there I was looking thru the flyer. I noticed this "Anniversary" sale ends tomorrow, so I'm guessing the Anniversary movie racks my be replaced with the Halloween ones this weekend maybe.

On my wishlist:
Creepshow
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Halloween H20
And any others that may catch my interest.

I guess I don't know how wide the Wal-Mart Sucky Selection extends, but, my store would be lucky (if you can call it that) to just get a few torture flicks / remakes (same difference), the odd Jason X (because I'm sure they've got a few of those to unload) or Freddy vs. Jason. Etc. I already got 7 out of the 8 Friday the 13th Deluxe Editions (I actually first started getting the discs because I heard the video and audio got a major overhaul on 6 of the 8 movies but that Part VI: Jason Lives and Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan were completely color-changed and that nobody can tell if the new colors are right or not, so I decided to only pick up Jason Takes Manhattan for the new extras / to date, I haven't gotten the new Jason Lives yet) but I have a feeling those will put in an appearence. Isn't there a new Nightmare on Elm Street boxset floating around to hock the goddamned remake?

Nothing yet at Walmart, but keep your eyes open on those anniversary racks. I saw The King's Speech for $9!

HMV has some Halloween/horro related movies for $5. The ones I saw were:
Creepshow
Arachnophobia
An American Werewolf in Paris

As well as a few others. I picked up Creepshow as I had the sequel in my collection already.
