Hey everyone, I am starting a new SotS topic to ask the following:

(I don't know if discussing of bootlegs is illegal, so this is not meant to break any rules)

I have every Disney animated feature / live action & animation hybrid / all the sequels, prequels, interquels, midquels.

Soon I am going to begin collecting the animated shorts but first want to add SotS to my collection as it's the last Disney feature with animation I'm missing.

Being as this movie will never be released by Disney themselves, we must rely on bootleg DVDs.

Can anyone guide me to the best bootleg DVD? I don't expect perfection - but am looking for the release with the best audio / video quality.

Well....I think when it comes to bootlegs they are obviously frowned upon.....though Song of the South I think is everyone's ONE Exception due to the fact Song of the South being released by Disney anytime soon or at all are slim to none.....

So frustrating that they won't release it.

Does anyone happen to have the soundtrack for the film? It's one of the very very few Disney soundtracks I'm missing.

I have that soundtrack on vinyl.

I'm in the process of selling off some of my old Disney albums, I'll let you know when I do. (PM isn't working here for some reason)

I guess I was one of the lucky ones. When we had all of these ads surrounding the opening page of UD there was one company offering a Digital-transfer of "Song of the South" in a special two-disc DVD set for only $16. I had a copy that a friend of mine made from the Japanese Laser Disc, which is still available by the way, and was satisfied with that until I got this 2-disc set and it now one of my favorite movies to watch. Even on my Blu-ray player, the color jumps off the screen, and the soundtrack is immaculate.

The second disc features a whole lot of Disney "missing in action" scenes such as the uncensored version of the "Pecos Bill" segment from "Melody Time", and the censored scene from "Fantasia", which I find completely harmless and should never have been edited out.

Also included in the second disc is "Coal Black & the Seven Dwarfs", the Warner Bros. cartoon that caused a lot of ire when it was released, and this is a perfect unadulterated copy of that 'toon. Also the very hard to find "Ant and the Aardvark" cartoons are featured here in their entirety. And just to add to the 'cream of the crop' there are two very rare Tom and Jerry cartoons.

All in all this is one collection that I treasure very dearly, and watch all the time. It is a shame that Walt Disney's company will not see fit to release this movie to the public. It would outsell almost any Disney release of the past few years. I am happy that I took the chance with this company, who have since moved on. I have tried their website several times and there is a "Closed - Gone Fishing" sign at the site.

Holy ambiguous racism, batman! That sounds amazing!

Can anyone comment on the quality of the Japanese laserdisc rip?

They say "money back guarantee" so I would take the chance. What the heck, the price is right, even though it is only a single disc.

As far as the Japanese Laser disc goes, it is as good as a DVD in quality and the picture and sound are very good. The one thing that you have to put up with is the Japanese subtitles on the left or right side of the screen. Other than that, it is a very good quality print of the film.

This is what I don't get. Disney, just like all the other studios, claims to be wanting to get hard on boot legs. But then, when they have a titles that is VERY much desired by the fan base, and they don't ever releases it, what do they expect?

I'm aware their official response would be something along the lines of "get rid of all the boot legs AND we will not release it," but I just can't believe the powers that be could be that naive about this. This one title alone may be the great contribution to the movie black market ever!

I just think common sense is not being used by Iger and company. Further, from what I gather, he personally feels it is a racist film. I disagree, but I don't run the Disney company. Either way, I'd think logic would tell him at the very least, if the studio released an official version, they could then control the message the studio would want fans to hear. Something like "Back in the day, people make racists films, but we've evolved since then," or something like that. In stead, the boot leg market is in full gear for this film and NONE of the folks who own said boot leg (you know there are tons that do) are getting that message.

I think Disney keeps dropping the ball on this one and then pats themselves on the back for a job not well done.

They should set up a small company to sell 'boot legs' from a 'newly discovered print' and include 'bonus features compiled from other releases.'

This company is just Disney but they are under the guise of a bootleg company.

I don't know how they'd keep it a secret - probably just not offer disney movie rewards points - but could you imagine if they just pretended to be a bootleg company and then released the perfect DVD?

As long as it is available to people who want it.I think disney will not release it. then the company is not assoiciated with the film. Mycastle.com has an excellent "2.0" copy available.

I've never seen this movie completely, but saw bits and pieces posted on sites like YouTube. I would love if Disney would release this on Blu-ray or DVD, or I could find a "copy" to watch.

The demand for this movie is out there, and I don't know why Disney continues to ignore releasing it.

I've said this before, but I find it very odd that Disney will use the song from the movie, Zip A Dee Doo Dah, but they won't acknowledge the movie that it came from. Doesn't make much sense. I found a great dvd rip of the movie that somewhat better than VHS quality and slightly less than dvd quality. But it's completely watchable. It has the Sebben Dwarves short as a bonus as well as some music and radio spot. But I would gladly spend actual money if they put it on dvd. I'd love to see it as a Disney Treasures special edition in a black tin.
