Bewitched TV Series Remake

Post by Sotiris »

CBS has ordered a script from Sony Pictures Television for a remake of the classic laffer "Bewitched." Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, the married couple behind the 2005 film version, are on board to exec produce through their Red Wagon shingle. Marc Lawrence ("Did You Hear About the Morgans?"), who will write the script, is also an exec producer.

It's no surprise that CBS would gravitate to a project with a pre-sold brand like "Bewitched," having scored one of the few hits of the 2010-11 season with "Hawaii Five-0," another TV reboot. Sony also is behind another remake getting buzz heading into the coming season, "Charlie's Angels," on ABC.

Sony, which was the studio behind the film version as well, has managed to sell the "Bewitched" format overseas in recent years, with adaptations in the United Kingdom, India and Russia.

"Bewitched" is just one of about a dozen comedy scripts Sony has gotten orders from at the broadcast level even though it's still relatively early in the development season.

On the 50th anniversary of its debut, classic TV sitcom Bewitched is eyeing a comeback. I’ve learned that Sony Pictures TV is shopping a new version of the supernatural comedy, which ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972. I hear there is already interest from multiple networks in the modern-day take, which is being penned by The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein.

The project hails from Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick’s Red Wagon Entertainment, which produced Columbia Pictures’ 2005 Bewitched film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, and also teamed with Sony TV on a potential series remake at CBS in 2011. Also producing the new version is Television 360, the TV arm of Management 360, which reps Kohn and Silverstein, along with CAA. Daniel Rappaport executive produces.

In a very competitive situation, Bewitched, a new take on the classic supernatural sitcom, has landed at NBC with a pilot production commitment. Sony Pictures TV took out the comedy, penned by The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, last week, garnering interest from multiple networks that created a bidding situation between NBC and ABC, the network that aired the original series from 1964-1972.

Coming on the 50th anniversary of Bewitched‘s debut, the new version is a reimagining of the original series two generations later. It centers on Daphne — Samantha’s granddaughter and Tabitha’s daughter — a single twentsomething witch who has always used her magical powers to conjure herself the perfect life. But she soon realizes that the one thing she cannot conjure and control is the one thing she wants most — real love.

The Bewitched reboot hails from Sony TV and Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick’s Red Wagon Entertainment, which produced Columbia Pictures’ 2005 Bewitched film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, and also teamed with Sony TV on a potential series remake at CBS in 2011 with different writers. Also producing the new version is Television 360, with Daniel Rappaport executive producing.

Just before he recently departed ABC Studios to embark on a rich overall deal at Netflix, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris sold one last high-profile project to ABC: Bewitched, a single camera, interracial blended family comedy based on the popular 1960s sitcom of the same name. It took a little while for all the deals to close, but the network has given a pilot production commitment to the new take on the classic supernatural sitcom, from Barris and Black-ish writer/producer Yamara Taylor. The project hails from ABC Studios, Sony Pictures TV, which has the rights to the title, and Sony-based Davis Entertainment (The Blacklist). Barris is executive producing via his Khalabo Ink Society banner alongside Taylor and Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox.

In Bewitched, written by Barris and Taylor, Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.

ABC, which aired the original Bewitched from 1964-1972, had been very interested in a reboot as the concept represents a twist on a family sitcom, which has been the network’s signature brand of comedy. In 2014, ABC heavily pursued a Bewitched sequel, one of two previous attempts by Sony Pictures TV to revive the comedy series over the past decade. Beside the 2014 project, which in a bidding situation landed a pilot production commitment at NBC but did not go to series, another reboot was in development at CBS during the 2011-2012 season.

I hate when they remake classics they don't have a prayer of matching. They're never going to recreate the magic and humor of Elizabeth Montgomery, Moorehead's Eudora, the bumbling aunt, etc. Hopefully they can keep the number of Darren's down at least. Of course, the one good thing is if the actor gets targeted with a sexual harassment/assault case (like Anthony Anderson on Black-ish), it won't be out of place for the show to recast him here.
