Does anyone remembers this special "Roger Rabbit and the Secrets of Toontown"? It's right here on YouTube. I have never watched this special in a long, long time. I remember when I first saw this TV special was back in 1991 when it was on Showtime where they air a repeat of the 1988 TV special on CBS. I watched and I enjoyed it! It' has a behind the scenes look at the making of the film and it was hosted by Joanna Cassidy. This special brings back memories, but I've never saw the CBS airing of this special, so I ended up seeing it in a rerun when it was on Showtime. Thanks to "thethiefarchive" for posting that special in 5 parts. Here they are. Enjoy!
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
But sadly, this special was not included on the DVD release from the "Vista Series" edition back in 2003. I hope that this special will be ended up on a Blu-Ray release anytime soon.

I taped this off of TV when it first aired and watched it endlessly while waiting for the actual movie to be released on home video.
It might be one of the only remaining VHS's I've managed to save after all these years. It has at least one completed scene in it that for whatever reason was cut from the final film; when Eddie is pulling a Loony Tunes-type gag on Smart Ass when asked, "where's da rabbit."
I still expect Eddie's reaction to be there every time I watch the actual movie and it's never even included as a deleted scene for a bonus feature.
I used to wonder why the special never appeared as a bonus feature on any release, but I imagine it might be due to some of the vintage cartoon footage included; it features clips of characters that never got to appear in the final film, like Tom & Jerry, so there may be royalties Buena Vista would rather not pay.
It was an amazing time to be a Disney fan. Animation was clearly turning around, even though we didn't have any internet to get the latest gossip on upcoming films. The general public didn't even have access to early news of The Little Mermaid like we do for more modern films . . . these days we seem to pick apart every little aspect of upcoming films for years on end.

You're right! The reason why that this special was not included on the DVD release, because of some legal issues going on where they put footage from actual cartoons from Disney and non-Disney. Some of the footage that are used on that special are Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes and the MGM Tex Avery cartoons. These three are owned by Warner Bros. and some early cartoons including Betty Boop are in the Public Domain.enigmawing wrote:I used to wonder why the special never appeared as a bonus feature on any release, but I imagine it might be due to some of the vintage cartoon footage included; it features clips of characters that never got to appear in the final film, like Tom & Jerry, so there may be royalties Buena Vista would rather not pay.
As I said, I used to watched it all the time since I recorded off of Showtime back in 1991 where they usually aired a rerun of a special from 1988, but there was one commercial that I remember when Showtime ran a promo of a repeat of the 1988 TV special when it was first aired on CBS. Here is the promo.

BTW, this promo had the old Showtime logo on the left corner along with a film "Mountains of the Moon" which was on afterwards and then the clock tells you how many minutes until the "Feature Presentation" starts. I remember this since the early 90's, but it gets annoying at times, but thank goodness, Showtime got rid of that annoying "Next" screen to go right with the promo and short films segment. That must be in the mid to late 90's.
