7-year-old Mauled By Leopard
A field trip for Kindergartners and First-graders turns tragic:
http://www.kansas.com/2011/05/06/183869 ... t-zoo.html
Lots of background on this incident. None of our grandkids were involved because we were with the Kindergarten classes, each adult had four kids to supervise. This boy had wandered away from his group unnoticed and the parents instead of looking for him got on the tram and hoped they might find him as they took the tour of the zoo. Lots of different angles on this story, but we will see what happens.
As of today, the Leopard is not going to be destroyed, after all he is a wild animal and the child climbed the fence and then got too close to the leopard enclosure.
The child is doing fine, hospital upgraded him from critical to serious to good condition. Let's hope that everyone involved learned their lesson.

Well, if he didn't, I'm sure he knows by now. I'm glad the animal wasn't put down, which seems to be the standard operating procedure for these kind of things. It technically didn't do anything wrong.Disneyphile wrote:I'm sorry, but 7 years old is old enough to know that you don't go within arm's reach of a wild animal.

Some people just don't understand the word "wild" in the case of Wild Animals. That's what zoo's are full of is wild and endangered animals. This leopard is only four years old and weighs about 77 pounds. All she was doing was defending her residence.
I just heard from a friend that the parents of the boy want to sue the zoo for not being able to "control" their animals. Now this is really a big joke. I hope they don't try something stupid like that. After all they were the one's who lost track of their son. And then failed to do a genuine search for him.

Wow, that's a pretty unfortunate story. I do feel sorry for the kid, but the people in charge should have paid more attention to the safety of the kids that they were supposed to look out for. I'm glad they won't kill the leopard, though. That would've been really sad. It was just doing what its natural instincts are.

at 7 yrs old, you should be smart and well aware enough to know not to climb into the enclosure or get near a f*cking wild cat that can rip the shit out of you.
I have no sympathy for the stupid kid.

It was reported last night that the boy was released from the hospital to the custody of his parents. They published a letter in the newspaper asking that they be not disturbed during this time and are considering home schooling for the rest of the school year (11 days plus a 1/2 day).
