Peter and the Starcatchers (Live-Action)

The history of this project is really interesting. It started out as a book series, then it was planned to be made into a CG-animated film, then it became a play, and now it will be adapted into a live-action film.

While Sony recently picked up an awful-sounding Peter Pan prequel starring Channing Tatum to the tune of $1 million, Disney is considering its own Pan prequel and it sounds far more promising. Disney chief Bob Iger recently told shareholders that the studio is considering an adaptation of Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson’s Peter and the Starcatchers, which sets Peter and his lost boys as the pirates instead of against the pirates. Said Iger:

“We considered making [it] a movie,” Iger said, noting they went as far as hiring a screenwriter to adapt the book. “We haven’t made a decision on that yet.”

The Wrap reports that Disney has been testing the material Off Broadway production at the New York Theater Workshop to see if it will translate into feature film. According to New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley, the play is a huge success.

And here I thought after Universals "Peter Pan," that Hollywood felt that Pan was dead for now. Man, that was a quick resurrection! I'm ok with Peter Pan films as long as they don't suck. Pan deserves better then that.

I wonder if the film will be a direct adaptation of the book, or an adaptation of the play, which I've heard is very good.

To be honest, I didn't care for "Starcatchers" when I first read it... five or so years ago, but I'm open to seeing a film version.

Ya, I bought it at a discounted book store about two years ago, read half of it, and then lost interest. It lacked that Peter Pan charm that Mr. Barrie gave us with the original. But, a film version may be interesting if it doesn't suck.

YAY! I haven't read the books but I enjoyed the stage version of it. Disney hasn't done much with it though. I hear there's a workshop of it going on in NYC now.

The adaptation is picking up steam.

Disney has hired writer Jesse Wigutow to adapt the best-selling children’s novel, Peter and the Starcatchers, the 2004 book published by Disney’s Hyperion which gives the backstory for the iconic Peter Pan character.

Co-authored by Dave Barry and Ridley Pierson, the book has become a hot property, with the current Broadway adaptation having just nabbed nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Play. Peter and the Starcatchers is the first in a series of books by the authors, giving franchise potential to the project.

Speaking of the Broadway show, is there any flying involved in it? You know, like how Mary Poppins flies in the stage version.

Peter is not Peter in the start of that show, nor is Tink. Peter is an unnamed 'boy' who wants to be free of the adults that beat him on the ship he is on, to have a name, to not grow up and to fly. Spoilers: At the VERY end the cast lifts Peter as if he were to fly which is just how they should do it with that show. Doors, some sets and prop are made of rope and gloves and small things like that. The whole thing is pretty minimalist to let your imagination, the comedy and the story do the work. Also as the songs seem to feature in every highlight reel I can find I do feel I should warn you that is not a musical. It is a play with two songs but it is a wonderful little piece that I feel proud to say was the first show I had the pleasure to see on Broadway.
