moderation activity on UD dwindling (w/ a suggestion)

Post by toonaspie »

Okay, this may not sound pleasant but I feel it must be said. I don't visit these forums as super often enough but I have been a long time member. I don't know what Luke is up to these days (or any of the moderators for that matter) but the Ultimate Disney forums are slowly becoming a mess and the moderation activity is not keeping up with it.

It's taking days (and sometimes weeks) for a higher-up to intervene in topics that have either gone off topic, filled with lots of mudslinging or have members throwing insults at each other. I mean if a thread has a title that suggests the remote possibility of controversy or flame wars, wouldn't a moderator at least be keeping an eye on it? I understand that perhaps the current moderators can't keep up with the load or have lives outside of UD. And I don't blame them for any trouble that some members on these boards will cause themselves by not following the rules. But there should be at least one or two moderators checking the active boards daily to put such troublemakers in check. To skip days causes alot of chaos and bad activity to build up and then threads become nothing more but flame wars.

And I know this idea sounds controversial, but a Disney forum is one of the last places where I would feel comfortable about seeing so much cussing and inappropriate graphics in (especially in the main Disney Discussion forum). Granted most members here are adults. I dunno if that was ever the intention from the start to create a Disney forum for adults to behave like adults. I thought the main purpose of UltimateDisney was DVD and BluRay discussion. Point being that younger people would probably want to join and talk about Disney. The idea of that happening and seeing all the things I read in the forums is a rather disturbing thought. I'm a cusser by nature but I keep it down on all forums that deal with Disney on account of what Disney represents to various age groups. Most of the cussing I'm seeing on here is coming more from members attacking other members than anything else. It's a bold thought to ban cussing from these forums, I know, but from what I've seen on here I think it should be considered (or at least put up to debate).

I think the main thing that's gotta happen now is that this site REALLY needs more moderators. Seriously on this. I know for a fact that when moderators fail to keep up, forums do fall apart and more ill mannered activity by members is allowed to run rampid and it only influences other members to do the same. And then you just have a mess that becomes irritating to get through. I also believe that if more members are kept in check, it will eventually have an effect of more responsible activity in the Internet forum world.

All thoughts are welcome on this. Thanks for your time.
