How do YOU collect Disney films?
How do YOU collect Disney films?
When it comes to collecting Disney films, whether the animated classics, live-action films, Pixar titles, or all of the above and beyond, what is the method to your madness?
Are you a completist? Someone that has vowed to purchase every title bearing the Disney logo, whether they personally like the film or not?
Or are you selective? Someone that only adds their absolute favorites to their collection?
Maybe you are you somewhere between the two extremes or quite possibly something completely different?
As for me, I'd owned all of the animated classics that received VHS releases up to May 2010, when I started the process of upgrading to the Blu-ray/DVD combo packs (I skipped all the DVD releases). I enjoy almost all of the animated classics, so I have no doubt that I will purchase most of them as they are made available from this point forward. However, there are certain titles, including Chicken Little and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (gasp!) that don't really interest me, so I am undecided on the idea of buying them simply to have a complete collection.
I'd be interested to see where most of you stand regarding your collections and how you add to them.

I think I would be a completist though trying to be selective.
I like collecting things which is the problem.
I wanted to have the definitive release so all old bonus features, but I don't actually have the time to watch them, so I really should just get the latest one.
However I believe that most of the DACs will get their time eventually and since I never bought them before I'll just wait until they upgrade to Blu especially for all non-Platinums because most of their features plain suck. It also saves money and since they aren't particularly sought after they have little resell value in the future not to mention since Disney really only puts out animation on Blu they have maintained a high standard and will probably continue to do so.
When I started a year ago, I now have the special editions for Tarzan, Dinosaur, Atlantis, Emperor's New Groove and both Fantasia Anthology and Ultimate Toy Box- the short-lived great era. I also got Aladdin because it went for cheaper in the UK with the Musical Masterpiece Edition out and 101 Dalmatians.
I am a Pixar fan more than anything so I have a number of editions which I again shouldn't have.
I say, I'm becoming more selective because I passed on Jungle Book, Pinocchio, Dumbo & Sleeping Beauty so far because I simply have no interest. Princess and the Frog as well actually.

That's me. Right now, it's because I'm broke as a joke. Christmas cleaned me out. But, if I had more money and resources, I would probably buy just about every classic film and cartoon and special released from the 1930's to maybe the early 1980's (except The Mickey Mouse Club, I saw that Helene Stanley short on Cinderella and it grated on my nerves like I can't describe). At least until I found I started caring less about what I was watching. I say this because... oh, I don't know what year it was but when I watched Old Yeller for the first time, I thought I might dislike it because I am not a westerns fan. But it's Disney and I adored it. So, I figure it's that Disney magic again. So I still really want to try things like Johnny Tremain and The Great Locomotive Chase. Just because I know that Disney feeling added to it will make it fun somehow.MJW wrote:Or are you selective? Someone that only adds their absolute favorites to their collection?

I used to consider myself a completist, but I see no merit in collecting
movies like Meet the robbinsons or The Sorcerer's Apprentice
(though to be fair I haven't yet seen those in its entirety..
)
Then again those that do not interest me firsthand might yet be purchased when the right pricetag comes along....
I do own all 2-d animated classic disney, be they
brilliant (bambi..lion king...jungle book) or lesser gems...(atlantis)
I plan on pursuing my interest in 2-d if only to keep the medium alive !
I detest current disney marketing that is ,in my own humble opinion, uncohesive and (who could blame them) purely driven by box-office results.
By uncohesive I mean the lack of interest in their own vast legacy.
For instance withdrawing great documentaries from dvd's so as not to clutter up disc space so as to then filling it to the brim
with these mentally retarded games..
So as to then later on claim that their new medium (blu-ray) will obtain everything ever released and ...wait for it...more

I'm somewhere inbetween. Of course my favorites are in my collection (Fantasia/2000, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, etc.), but there are also films that I have purchased that I kind of just bought because it's associated with Disney (the first thing that comes to mind is Darby O'Gill and the Little People and a lot of the Treasures/Legacy sets). I would like to own all of the DACs on either DVD/Blu-ray, but so far that hasn't happened because I either don't have the money or I can't find it for a price that won't hurt my small income (since I'm a college student). It would be a dream to own everything they've produced, but I'm not Reyquila. I just don't have the money all the time. I've become more selective, but if there's an unexpensive DVD/Blu-ray that I don't have that sounds interesting or is a DAC, I'll probably pick it up.

Having no brain back then, I was a completist. Now I am a selective!

Only the films made by Walt Disney, the man, the producer, the filmmaker, who had a unique, consistent perspective, aesthetic taste and storytelling sensibility. Those works, whether cartoon or live-action, theatrical or television -- are simply not the same as later company product just bearing his name as a brand. From the best to the least, from sophisticated to naive - - Walt's films reflect a certain youthful and romantic creative spirit found at the heart of a cartoon studio.
The animated films created by Walt and his "nine-old-men" remain unsurpassed in the art of character animation, draftsmanship and production design.
Also, Walt's stories are based in populist, timeless, classic themes and ideals that not only entertain, but reassure and reaffirm the human spirit.

I buy all the animated classics, but are more selective when it comes to live action. I used to be more of a completist and buy the animated straight to video-sequels to Disney classics as well, but no more I tell you;)
When it comes to Walt Disney Animation Studios, I have bought all the animated classic films on DVD. And I will buy the Blu-ray releases for all the classics that I really like, but I might skip some titles (Oliver & Company, The Aristocats to name a few) that are not among my top favorites since I allready own them on DVD.
I buy all the Pixar-films and I buy all the live action Disney-films that I care for; Pirates of the Caribbean, Narnia, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins etc. The "big" blockbuster kind of movies. I don't really care that much for older live action Disney-films, for me it really started with Pirates in 2003 (with a minor excpetion for Mary Poppins though.)
Also buys animated movies like A Christmas Carol, The Nightmare Before Christmas, A Goofy Movie, The Tigger Movie etc.

I'm primarily a selective, but I wouldn't mind if I reached a point financially where I could be a completist, too, as far as the DAC canon goes.
Right now, I usually buy the movies that appeal to me most, or, in some cases, movies in the "prestigious" lines.
With movies from other studios, I am much more selective.

im in between. i have most stand alone animated movies, with the exception of home on the range. i do want to get it, just to have, but want to pay less than $10NZD for it, since it will be rarely watched.
i have some DTV sequels, and want to pick up the rest eventually. ones i want are little mermaid 2 and 3, lion king 3, lady and the tramp 2 and peter pan 2. im not interested in the cinderella and beauty and the beast sequels, but guess i will end up with them eventually.
live action, with the exception of mary poppins, doesnt interest me, though to be fair ive never sat and watched any of the other titles either.
i did make sure to buy the true life adventure tinned sets for dad a few xmas' back and i will get them when he passes. very fond memories of watching ratty "taped off tv" episodes as a kid with dad telling me about the animals. best christmas present i could have got him... he was so excited.

I collect what I love and like, along with some titles that I dislike but they have some good supplements. I want to get all the Treasures sets eventually because they're high quality material and supplements, and have only 7 that I need to acquire (all of Wave 2, "Elfego Baca/Swamp Fox", "More Silly Symphonies", "Disneyland: Secrets, Stories, & Magic", and "Annette"). My pre-1980 live-action collection is pretty much complete except for a few DMC and DEP exclusive titles that I want to acquire (The Sword and the Rose, The Light in the Forest, Almost Angels). There aren't many post-1980 live-action titles I'm interested in that I don't already have, mainly just the new releases. I'm not holding my breath for vintage "Disneyland" serials since the Treasures was the only way to get those, and that line went the way of the dodo.

Completionist in regards to the DAC's. I want to own all 50, and any that follow and spent a lot of time snagging them as cheap 1$ vhs' at the pawn shop until they were either A) Put back out on DVD or B) I could find the DVD. I stopped buying VHS a year or two back for them and now work towards upgrading (3 Left!) and hunting down the ones I'm missing (A couple 40's package features)
I also want to be a completionist for the Treasure line. Anything/everything else such as Live Action, Winnie the Pooh, Sequels etc. I'm more selective on. Some thing like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einsteins etc will never be bought (Though I did snag Mickey's Treat since it was cheap and Halloween oriented).

I am a completest when it comes to the 50 classics, I would eventually like to own them all. And of course I like to have the complete series' (Platinum, Diamond), even if that means double dipping.
But when it comes to live action, I really only buy the films that I enjoy, or am interested in seeing. But I must admit, if I had the money, I would buy everything with the Disney logo.

I did the same thing! In fact, that's how I got back into Disney. My parents brought me a bag of my old Disney VHS tapes to donate to the thrift store near me, but instead I started going through and re-watching them. I then went to the thrift store and eventually found every DAC that was released on VHS (up to Home on the Range) for only $1 each, and some were brand new and still sealed! The only one I couldn't find was Saludos Amigos.Chernabog_Rocks wrote:Completionist in regards to the DAC's. Since then, I've been upgrading to Blu-ray/DVD combo packs and slowly phasing out the VHS copies. Going from VHS to Blu-ray, you can imagine how astounded I've been at the picture quality!!!
