Singin' In The Rain on Blu-Ray in 2012 plus 2 more!

"The big release news today is that Warner Home Video has just announced that three of their bigger classic catalog titles will be released on Blu-ray Disc and (re-issued on) DVD in 2012 as new Ultimate Collector's Editions. These will include a Singing' in the Rain: 60th Anniversary Edition, a Camelot: 45th Anniversary Edition and a What Ever Happened to Baby Jane: 50th Anniversary Edition - good news for classic film fans indeed! This means, however, that all three titles will go on moratorium starting on 12/31. So if really you want them now on DVD and you can't wait until 2012, you have a month or so."

Can't wait for Singin' in the Rain. I enjoy the film to bits (though I think I'll always like The Band Wagon more), so it'll look great in HD. But Warner Bros., if you're going to be releasing more classic musicals to Blu-Ray, when the hell are you gonna get around to the Show Boat collection?

I've only seen bits and pieces of Camelot, but have watched the trailer a few times on the My Fair Lady DVD, so I look forward to it.

And Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is a classic. Combined with the news that All About Eve hits Blu-Ray next year, it's a good time to be a Bette Davis fan.

I'll probably end up picking all of these, at some point.

I've seen Singin' in the Rain, of course, as well as Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, but while I know the music, I've never seen the filmed version of Camelot. I'm kind of surprised Warner is deeming that film UCE treatment, though. I never thought it was one of their crown jewels.

About time. I heard about Citizen Kane and was wondering if this was coming too (as rumored). Warner already put out King Kong, Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, etc. and I was starting to wonder if they forgot that this was also one of their jewels. Speaking of classics, I still haven't picked up The Maltese Falcon or The Treasure of the Sierra Madre yet.

"Camelot" will probably be worth it for the visuals, even though the movie itself is miscast and something like two weeks long.

If Warner had been able to keep their home video distribution rights for My Fair Lady (it went back to CBS, and thus, to Paramount), I could easily see it getting the UCE treatment. Maybe they figured since they couldn't release My Fair Lady, they can give the UCE treatment to their other big Lerner & Loewe musical. Well, aside from already-on-Blu Gigi and virtually-ignored Brigadoon.

It comes out February 1 next year, along with An Affair to Remember. All the DVD extras from their two-disc sets will be included, which is good since I never picked those up (though I have the single-disc Studio Classics versions of both titles). Both are being released in the book packaging that's been used on Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Sound of Music.

I really hope Fox doesn't neglect its DVD releases in the midst of their preparation of classics on Blu-Ray. We haven't had any Cinema Classics Collection releases in awhile and there's still plenty of movies in their catalogue that need individual release. I'm certainly not paying $500 for Fox's 75th Anniversary box set simply to get 1933's Cavalcade (the only film in the 75-film set that hasn't been previously released).

Watching the trailer on the My Fair Lady DVD always felt too long as well. Is the whole movie just as slow-moving too?

I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. Singin' in the Rain was one of the earliest titles on DVD in 1997, but its SE didn't come until 5 years later (2002). The six year "wait" between 2006 and 2012 (Blu-Ray's beginning & SITR hitting the format) is only an extra year, and we've still got the 2002 DVD to watch until then. ;)

I'll probably get all three; although "Camelot" has always been a bit of a problem - mainly because the best part of the story is told very early. Vanessa Redgrave does a nice job in a role she's probably not very suited to.

I'm also looking forward to upgrading my copies of "All About Eve" and "An Affair to Remember". Will be checking to see if they are region-free and have some new extras first, though. Criterion's upcoming release of Visconti's "Senso" looks quite tempting as well... So many movies, so little money...

So the first of these titles has been scheduled for a release, and it's not a UCE.

Camelot Digibook BD Pre-order, April 24th

The coverart is pretty misleading in my opinion-

I look forward to announcements on Baby Jane and Singin' in the Rain, which I think will be the only one to receive UCE treatment.

I would expect Singin' in the Rain to be out June-July time as it's been announced for July 30th over here in the UK
