PLEASE READ What I said about Lasseter ...

Those who've been following the Tangled thread during these last few days will know that I idiotically called Lasseter a moron. I said it impulsively in a moment of anger and have come to really regret it. I feel genuinely sorry for calling the man names and for upsetting the forum spirit. Unfortunately it is now starting to haunt me, especially as I use my real name and surname on these forums.

Yesterday I decided to remove the offending post. However, quite a few people quoted me in the original thread and I cannot remove those quotes as I didn't post them!

Hence I am asking those who did quote me if they can edit their original posts and remove all traces of my post. Not that I really deserve this considering my childish behaviour, but it would make me a little happier and give me peace of mind.

So Sotiris, Swillie!, Polizzi, RIPJoeRanft, jamesjubilee and mawnck ... can you edit your posts on the following pages, please?

Julian, I read the cartoonbrew blog and insults aside, I understand your frustration.

Granted John Lasseter is a succesful man but in various ways overrated. (And calling anyone or any studio a storytelling genius is irrellevant since it's all a YMMV *your mileage may vary.) Having seen every Pixar film to date, there have been times I began to tire of what I saw as a repetitive formula: a band of quirky characters (usually with a buddy comedy forefront) on an adventure and all are animated with the same kind of cutey look.

But it's a formula that works for Pixar...why mess with a good thing?

In fact you can definitly see the John Lasseter-Pixary style in some Disney works and the biggest ones that come to mind for me are Bolt and the holiday special Prep and Landing. Both had quirky likeable characters, climatic plots, and heartwarming themes. That's all you need to make a good film but not a great one. A great film takes these elements and get bolder and deeper with them.

If anything that's what Disney greatly needs more than anything else...a film that pushes the boundaries of the success formula. I'd like to think that's why The Lion King still remains to this day the most financially successful film in the canon. It's nothing like Disney has ever done before and you even tend to forget at times that it's even a Disney film.

I dont blame Disney or Mr Lasseter for wanting to play it safe, but I dont expect Tangled to be a resuscitator of the Disney glory days. I can see Tangled being successful enough that the company would be proud to call it a classic in due time...much like The Princess and the Frog.

For me however, Tangled has lacked any appeal for me to actually want to blow $8 to go see it. The complaint that it feels like a retread is understandable. (A fairy tale w/music by Alan Menken is nothing new). At the same time, perhaps this could explain why Disney took the liberties with the Rapunzel tale by changing the title and the focus. It still doesnt feel like enough for me. You know Maximus to me is just a silent version of Buck from Home on the Range (both are horses who go rogue to pursue a wanted man).

And then there's the marketing: if anything, whoever was in charge of marketing this film needs to go. The previews are not addictive and none of Alan Menken's music is being used (being replaced instead w/contemporary non-film associated tunes). It's being treated like a two-star live action kiddie film instead of an animated classic. Bad move on Disney's part.

I don't mind moving on, because we ALL dislike some aspect of one Disney movie or another. Real people are responsible for the likeable aspects of our favorite Disney movies, and they're ALSO responsible for the unlikeable aspects of our least favorite Disney movies. It's only natural that truly passionate Disney fans might become overzealous from time to time.

Of course, I ALSO understand that if any one of us wrote a script for a new animated Disney movie, not all of the REST of us would like it. I'd hate to be called anything despicable because of "Golden Opportunities", and yet, everybody is entitled to their opinion. At least you weren't literally TALKING to the guy.

In any event, I think that we should all move on. Somebody pass me the roast chicken before this Medieval banquet is over, 'cause I LOVE to banquet!

You know, while I did not see the original post, it is ok to get frustrated even with guys you may normally like, or most like. I say never feel like you have to bow to the Disney "yes" men or the Pixar fan boys. If something they do sucks, then it sucks. I'd like to believe Lassiter would be the first to say that.

My take on him, is that while he is a bit of a hero to me, I know he is not always right. Especially the last year or so I find myself questioning him a lot. I mean this is the same guy to chased Chris Sanders off to Dreamworks, right? I have not really seen Chris's vision of "American Dog" ("Bolt"), but this is the same guy that gave us "Lilo and Stitch" as well as "How to Train Your Dragon?" I mean, I trust him at least as much when it comes to films. And Lassiter was ok with Tinker Bell talking. Still not so sure on that one, even though over all I don't mind those films.

The point is, when it comes to these entertainment geniuses, many times they need to be challenged to keep them from getting big heads and making stupid stuff. It's is a good thing if used right. So don't worry about it.
