I know that not all of you will agree with me, but the following are my opinions about the issues of abortion and medical cannabis:
* ABORTION: I believe that the practice of abortion should be illegal, except in the cases of rape, incest, and medical necessity/ mental incapacitation. I know that people can argue about the existentiality of a fetus, but I am more concerned with the issue of responsibility.
If I am a wealthy, 16-year-old girl, who becomes pregnant by being irresponsible, and I can just say, "Hey, Daddy, gimme some odd thousand dollars for a legal abortion," and Daddy says, "Sure, Princess. Anything so that our neighbors never find out.", what's to stop me from saying "Oops, I did it again!" a year later...and saying so again a year after that, and getting as many abortions as I wanted, just as though I was, say, getting a new cell phone, or something?
I believe that legalizing abortions will give every excuse in the world to teens, 20-somethings, and unfaithful married people...to haphazardly create as many "accidents" as possible...with absolutely no thought to what they're doing...
If abortion were legalized, and I were a teenager, would I ever have to, or WANT to think before I had sex? No way in heck! I'd think, "Cool, dude! I can have sex anytime I want to, with ANYONE whom I want to have fun with, and as long as every abortion is LEGAL, well, I'll never have anything to worry about, even if I get pregnant!"
I once roomed with a girl who'd had an abortion. She had not been raped. She hadn't been impregnated by a relative, and she'd been in good physical health. She wasn't mentally impared, either. Her parents had even been cool with the abortion. Her current boyfriend was the one with whom she would've had the baby; he had run away shortly after she'd become pregnant, but he was back, and she was in love with him, even though their relationship was rocky.
The girl tried to mother everything, and everyone in sight, including me. She was going to a counsellor because she was depressed. She was obsessed with being a mother. She claimed that her boyfriend's mother was a terrible mom to her children. She kept saying that SHE'D be able to mother those kids more gently. She couldn't wait to have kids.
The poor girl died in a car accident awhile later. Her boyfriend had not intended for the accident to occur, and he'd lived; I'm certain that he felt more than guilty, especially since their families hadn't gotten along.
The girl was almost 22 when she died. She never got to hold the baby whom she might have delivered. When we were roommates, she would sometimes think about the baby, noting how old he or she would've been...
I also disagree with the legalization of abortion because I believe that the issue of childbirth concerns TWO people, not just one. A baby is created by a woman AND a man, and the message that's given by the phrase "A woman's right to choose" completely excludes the men. Some men actually WANT the baby that they created, and I don't think that it's right for a woman to tell a man, "Sorry, but it's MY body!" any more than I think that it's right for a man to tell a woman, "Well, I won't have our baby running around this town, so you'd better get rid of it!" It takes two to Tango; when the issue is one of babies, two people were most definitely involved with the process of creating the possibility for a new life...
* MEDICAL CANNABIS: I don't really agree with the legalization of a mind-altering drug, but, then again, I don't know all of the facts...I know that the idea sounds to be scary...Then again, there have been various times during which I have been in such extreme pain that I've wanted to take ANYTHING that might make me feel well again...
