Chances for a SE Hercules DVD?

Post by milojthatch »

There may be a thread for this before (I did in fact try to look, but found nothing) but what are the odds of getting a better release for "Hercules?" Maybe one with the Michael Bolton music video this time? And maybe add at least some trailers and production art?

I sure hope so, milojthatch! Hercules is one of my favorite Disney movies, and I believe it does not get the attention it deserves. Even A Diamond Edition would be worthy for it! But, I won't think it will happen because when the General Public thinks of Disney Movies, Hercules is not one that comes to mind. Both Hercules and Hunchback of Notre Dame are spectacular movies, and I think they are equally good and deserving of a 2 Disk Special Edition.

Why do you think that is? I always thought that those two were considered part of the rennaissance of the 90's, but they do seem to be forgotten gems of the "canon". So why do you think it is?

It wasn't until I came to UD that I saw the big 4 being described as the big 4. I've always put Hunchback in particular and Hercules on the same level as the "big 4". I still do. That's why I don't understand how Disney is treating them differently.

From a purely speculative standpoint, the chances are very good that in the next year or two there will be special editions for these films. I say that because there are very few films left that haven't been re-released. Out of all the Disney canon, non-package/non platinum or diamond films, you have:

The Rescuers
The Rescuers Down Under
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hercules
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Treasure Planet
Brother Bear
Home on the Range

The bottom four films are not beloved enough by the general public to receive a re-release yet, and as Disney likes to re-release multiple non-Diamond DVD's per year, I think the odds are good. Hunchback also has an anniversary next year, and Hercules the year after (Disney hates to pass up an anniversary for well-known films!). Again, this is all speculation.

I'd say that it's unlikely Hercules will get another DVD release. I'd say that we might see a Blu-Ray or Combo next year or the year after though.

Humm, happy to see just as much love out there for this fine film as it deserves. My guess, based on how Disney has done it before depends on how they see the film. If they see it on the same level as a "Robin Hood" or "Great Mouse Detective," then I think MutantEnemy will be right and something will come soon on DVD. Let's hope even if it is a single disc (which would most likely be the case if they put it in that category) then let's hope they finally put the Michael Bolton video with it.

But, if they see it on the same level as say "Sleeping Beauty" or "Lion King," then a Blu Ray release would seem the most logical conclusion. I'm hoping for the DVD myself, but we'll see. I was just interested in what other's thought?

Along with Hercules, there's a few other movies still trapped in the old "Gold Collection":
Make Mine Music
Melody Time
Fun and Fancy Free
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad
The Rescuers Down Under

and The Black Cauldron which is finally getting replaced in a couple weeks.

I'm hoping some of them get special editions next year.

Disney should really release Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame on Blu-ray, loaded with bonus material!

Me too, that'd be awesome! I hope one day, eventually, all the DAC's are out on Blu-ray. I could see that happening, but I don't know if they'd give the less popular titles the complete restoration they need.

I think next fall (2011) we'll see a DAC coming to Blu. The question is, which one will it be? Odds are it'll be The Black Cauldron if it follows in Alice in Wonderland's footsteps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this next years titles so far?:

Dumbo (probably feb. 2011)
Bambi (spring 2011)
Alice in Wonderland (probably spring 2011)
Tangled (March 2011)
The Lion King (fall 2011)

I think they'll be a title in there between Tangled and The Lion King unless that's when Alice in Wonderland will come out.

They won't. They didn't do that for DVD and they won't for Blu-ray (proper restoration for less popular titles that is). I don't think they will release all the animated canon on Blu-ray anyway. With the pace they are going a new format will most likely be introduced.

If Disney is smart (they aren't), they would re-release "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" on Blu-ray to coincide with 2011's theatrical and blu-ray release of "Untitled Winnie the Pooh sequel".

Sorry to venture farther off-topic, but how long after the Alice DVD release was the future Blu-ray release announced? I always wonder if Disney is "testing the waters" with a DVD only release, and if enough people bite, they put the Blu into the release schedule. That's what I'm thinking/hoping with The Black Cauldron, but I doubt Disney thinks they'll get enough sales or even warrant a Blu-ray. I am well aware that TBC on Blu is HIGHLY unlikely, but you never know.

Now, back to Hercules, lol

I don't think that many titles need a complete restoration, I can't imagine that any of the movies are in bad shape. New masters have to be made, yes, but HD broadcasts and DVDs benefit from those as well. I'm sure every Classic will be released on Blu eventually, just as they did on DVD. We're fortunate that they'll have to put some effort in it, you can get away with much less on BD than on DVD.
I've never seen Hercules, but any title that that would bring us closer to other Classics on Blu (apart from the Diamond collection) gets my vote.

For next year I think that disney should put out 2 extra blu-rays
1. Winnie the Pooh- because they have a sequel coming out and the blu-ray would sell really well.

2. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame- because it would be it's anniversary and portover from the laserdisc to blu-ray would save them money.

And for 2012

1. Lady and The Tramp- after bambi the next march platinum was LATT so it would make sense to have it in 2012

2. cinderella- Because if you skip Aladdin it was the next fall platinum.

3. Aladdin- 2012 would be it's 20th anniversary and would sell amazingly because of it's first time on blu-ray.

Off-topic but, holy crap. Aladdin was the first movie I ever saw in theaters.... I'm old ;_; lol.

I'd definitely buy Aladdin on Blu-ray (it is my favorite Disney movie, and I was REALLY excited when the DVD came out!)

 I guess I should be more clear, when I said I was old it's cause I was only 4 when I saw it lol. But being a teen during those years would be cool! I'm glad I was a little kid when all these Disney movies were coming out though.
