I was down in the basement (finished) and noticed a slight pungent odor. We couldn't pinpoint the source but it kinda smelled like a kitty-litter box that needed changing. I just figured it was some small spot of moisture that would be gone in a day or two.
Tuesday when we got home from school the smell was upstairs, too.
After frantic searching in the basement we found a 6x6 foot section of carpet that was damp. No visible pipe leaks, so we theorized the following: Ice flows from the roof have leaked down the inside of the garage wall to the basement foundation and are then soaking back up thru the carpet in a crack in that foundation. We've been fanning the carpet for days and this morning it was actually dry to put down some baking soda.
Whew. Looks like we dodged a bullet there.
But wait.
We got home tonight after a 14-hour day and the temperature in the house, with the heat on, is about 53 degrees. We're trying to get someone out here that's on call, but he's 90-minutes away. It's 10PM and we have out 3-year old upstairs under layers of blankets. This week has just sucked bigtime. And to top it all off my mother-in-law fell on ice on Sunday and broke her arm.
If ANYONE has some good karma to spare we could really use some over here
