Disney hits the $5 bins

Post by slave2moonlight »

So, I was at Wal-Mart a couple days ago, and I found Disney's "The Other Side of Heaven" in the 5 dollar bin. There were a bunch in there, complete with rewards codes and all. This is the first time I've seen a Disney movie in the 5 dollar bin at Wal-Mart, or in any similar sections anywhere else. Has anyone else spotted Disney DVDs for this price anywhere? If so, where and which ones? Incidentally, I have never seen Other Side of Heaven, but I definitely picked it up!

I don't expect to see the animated classics in the bins, but I was thinking maybe we might finally start to see some live-action Disney in there. I have a big collection of Disney live-action, but I lack a lot. Perhaps we'll at least start seeing some of the later stuff like Lohan's Freaky Friday, The Big Green, Max Keeble, Tuck Everlasting, and so on... That'd be great to me. Perhaps even some of the single disc cartoon releases. I wouldn't mind eventually finding the one with the Ludwig Mickey and the Beanstalk that way. Or maybe the Proud Family Movie or Kim Possible: The Villain Files... Just some thoughts. There's still quite a bit of classic stuff I need to, but I'd just be happy to see that stuff back on the shelves and would by it if I ran across it, like Follow Me Boys, One and Only Genuine Original Family Band, Monkeys Go Home, and some others...

The Other Side of Heaven" technically isn't a Disney film. It is as much Disney as "Veggie Tales are Warner Bros. Both were just picked up in distribution deals on DVD. Disney didn't even distribute it in theaters.

Anyway, every now and then, Best Buy has a sweet deal on live action Disney films (mostly the old Walt era or just after ones) for about $5-6 each. No idea when they will do it again, as it is just every so often, like maybe twice a year? But when they do have it, it is a great time to stack up on those old classics! Keep your eyes peeled.

Yeah, I forgot about those Best Buy deals. I don't recall if they've ever been less than 6.99. Maybe they were 5.99 last time though. But , yeah, that's how I really bulked up on my live-action Disney. Unfortunately, they haven't been carrying a lot of the old titles. Last time they did the 5.99 deal, I pretty much got all the titles I needed that they still carry (of the ones that have ever been on sale I mean), so unless they change up the titles they have on the shelf or include some others this time that haven't been on sale that low before, I won't have any left to buy in the next sale. Oh, unless it includes Snow Dogs. That's one I didn't manage to get when it was 6.99 one week. What I want to see them restock are those I mentioned before though, like Follow Me Boys, Family Band, Monkeys Go Home and so on. Some others I still need are No Deposit, No Return, Hot Lead and Cold Feet, Candleshoe, Napoleon and Samantha, Boatniks, and probably a few others. Then there are some post 70's titles I'm still wanting too.

I've actually seen my fair share of animated classics for about $7 at Best Buy (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Fun and Fancy Free, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and Home on the Range, for instance).

Uh, these prices are going up, guys! Ha, that IS interesting about animated classics for 7 at Best Buy. Never saw that! As for the ones out for 13 or so, it's none of the ones I need. I'm halfway tempted by Great Mouse Detective though, since my original release is back home.

Fascinating, I have never seen 2 for 15 or 2 for 10 bins at a Wal-Mart. Maybe it's a Canada thing? I do know that the quality of DVDs from Canada do seem to be cheaper, so maybe that ha something to do with it. Our local Wallgreens got a bunch of Canadian DVDs for a while (they had the titles on the case in both English and French). I bought a few, and one was DIsney's Pooh's Grand Adventure. I ended up returning it because it wouldn't play on my DVD players because it read like a DVD-R or a dollar DVD rather than like a regular DVD. I also noticed the packaging of some of the Canadian DVDs, like the inserts, seemed lower quality, like the Valiant one I also considered buying.

When Best Buy does their sale (which the last one was just a month or two ago), have you looked at their web site? They normally have a bigger selection there then at the stores.

Also, if you don't care about getting used stuff, most of the older live action films at cheep at second hand dealers. Check out stuff like half.com or Amazon's market place.

I've found Pollyanna, Swiss Family Robinson and Old Yeller/Old Yeller 2 in the 7$ and under bins. Also College Road Trip, most DCOM's, Parent Trap (1995) for under 12$ or part of a 2 for 1 deal.

Really? Where? Never seen a DCOM that cheap! As for all the Wal-Marts I've been too, they've had SOME Disney live-action selections for 7.50, but no lower than that and not many. What really stinks is that they have stayed the same titles at Wal-Mart and Best Buy for a long time. For a while, they would switch up their selection, but it's been a long time since they have. For example, the titles I still need to get haven't been on the shelves anywhere locally for a LONG time, like One and Only Genuine Original Family Band, Monkeys Go Home, and various others. For some reason, they made the first and last Dexter Riley film easily available, eventually even on a double feature DVD, but the middle film became impossible to find in person. Had to get it off Ebay.

As for buying used DVDs, nah, I never do it. In my experience, people just don't take good care of their stuff. The couple of times I tried buying used DVDs/CDs, they were a wreck. Never again. And I can't buy online at most places because I don't use a credit card and not enough sites accept Paypal, unfortunately.

We have nine (count' em 9) Wal-Marts in the Wichita area, and I cruise through $5 bins about once every ten days or so. I found that most of the Disney titles that are in the bins are older, non-widescreen, live-action titles. At one Wal-Mart I found "The Light At The Edge of The World", "Watcher in the Woods" and "The Other Side of Heaven".

At another Wal-Mart I found "The Apple Dumpling Gang/The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again" two-disc set, the Vault Disney edition of "Pollyana", the Vault Disney edition of "Swiss Family Robinson" along with the other titles mentioned above.

My advice is to cruise these $5 bins on a semi-regular basis, and remember every Tuesday evening around 11 p.m., new titles are added.

I have not noticed any Disney titles in any of the Wal-Mart $5 dollar bins I have been to. I do not even check the bins much since it is usually a mess and usually has the same titles over and over.

I guess this all depends on your location, but in the various areas of Texas and Oklahoma I've been to lately, I have never seen Disney in the 5 dollar bins except that recent Other Side of Heaven encounter, and I check the 5 dollar bins every time I go to Wal-Mart. Though, some of the Wal-Marts now are getting rid of the bin and having 5 dollar sections on the shelves, but I still check 'em.

HOWEVER, I did just see a new end-cap display at Wal-Mart yesterday that I plan to go back to today and maybe pick a flick or two from. It was a Disney 6.00 display, which is still the cheapest I've seen Disney films at Wal-Mart (aside from Other Side of Heaven). Unfortunately, they didn't have any "haven't seen them on shelves in a while" DVDs yet again, but at least they did have around 3 I still need. Money's tight right now, so I don't know if I'll get them all. Hopefully, the display will be around for a while. But, I hope to at least get the Lohan Freaky Friday today. The other two I still need that they had for 6 were "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Princess Diaries". Though, I know as soon as I get the Princess Diaries, it'll be announced for Blu-Ray. Anyway, the other titles they had that I can remember (and already owned) were 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the original Freaky Friday, Benji the Hunted, That Darn Cat (original), Inspector Gadget, Pollyanna (I think), Swiss Family Robinson (again, I think), some Herbie movies (I forget if it was all of them), and, well, I just can't remember. It was quite a nice variety of titles, but ones they have had for a while now at 7.99 or so and up, and like I said, only three that I still needed to get. I hope we will soon see them put out some of those titles that haven't been on shelves lately.

Incidentally, another reason I didn't get any yesterday is that I was there for the purpose of picking up the Great Mouse Detective. At 13 dollars, I figured it was worth the upgrade for the improved picture quality and restored original title.

Just picked up the Lohan Freaky Friday at Wal-Mart for 6 on that new display they have, and Where the Red Fern Grows too. I didn't get Princess Diaries because it said it was fullscreen on the back. I'm pretty sure there's a better one out there with the widescreen, isn't there? Anyway, it's one I expect to get a Blu-Ray release sometime soon.

There is a 2-disc DVD release of the Movie in case you didn't know which is probably the best release right now for the time being. And IDK perhaps it wil be on Blu ray soon...I guess it depends of how long soon is to you. I was thinking they could release possibly when Tangled hits Blu ray next year but I doubt it...then again....Disney Marketing is hard to comprehend these days  :P
