The SOAPnet channel is all washed up and will be replaced by Disney Junior, a new 24-hour channel aimed at preschoolers.
The Disney-ABC Television Group announced Wednesday that the channel is set to debut in 2012. It will adopt learning themes geared to kids ages 2 to 7.
Disney Junior will replace the SOAPnet channel, which is available in 75 million U.S. homes and features reruns of daytime dramas.
Before Disney Junior is launched as a 24-hour channel, the name will be introduced on the popular Disney Channel's daily programming block for preschoolers that's now branded Playhouse Disney.
The new network will compete with Viacom's Nick Jr. channel, among other rival preschool-oriented programming.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Seriously, what kind of parent will even have a preschooler up past 8:00 pm anyway?!?
This would be understandable if it remained a programming block. But 24 hours? Ugh.
How the hell am I going to watch "Ryan's Hope" now? Bad enough it's on at 5am, now it's going to be off the air (again).

I like that idea, or at the very least turn SOAPnet into classic Disney Channel. If they really want this Play House Disney network, I say at the very least, have that programing on in the morning and early afternoon, but then in the afternoon switch it to the old shows they use to have on Disney (Gummi Bears, Even Stevens) and then in the evenings make it Vault Disney! That would be cool!Mickeyfan1990 wrote:Why not just keep the SOAPnet, and instead make a new channel called Disney Channel Retro that shows shows from the 50s to the early 00s? THAT could work!

Soaps are dying anyway. Guiding Light and As the World Turns died. One Life to Live, All My Children and General Hospital are next. The ratings are awful.
Only three soaps will survive and they're more than enough to satisfy the few soap fans left. SOAPnet serves no purpose once those shows are all canceled.

If that's the case they should have created a Vault Disney Channel when they removed the vault disney portion of the disney channel as a ploy to show more Lizzie McGuire re-runs.estefan wrote:Don't you see this shifting of Playhouse Disney shows to a new channel is all just a ploy to show more Jonas re-runs? At least, that's the impression I'm getting from this.

oh whooope, just what we need.....24 hours of CGI animation. How about classic mickey with hand drawn animation. Kids today rarely see hand drawn animation anymore.
If they drop Playhouse Disney COMPLETELY from Disney Channel and start playing old classic shows that I watched when I visited my grandma, such as Pooh's Corner or Dumbo's circus, I'd be all for it.
And we know this is just a way turn Disney channel into a 24 hour hannah montana rerun central, since Disney channel is OBSESSED with that show.

Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I simply don't understand why Disney no longer realizes that childhood nostalgia is one of its biggest selling points...

Watching Pooh's Corner and Dumbo's Circus was a memorable part of my childhood. If they aired shows like this then I wouldn't mind skipping my weeks worth of Y&R on Saturday! I wish the old Disney series would be released on DVD, like the Saturday morning Aladdin and the Little Mermaid cartoons.
