The News Headlines thread
I searched for "news" and nothing came up...so...
This thread can be used for news headlines that you read that interest you, but that don't necessarily need their own thread.
Women on the pill live longer: study
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100312/hl_ ... 50aGVwaQ--
It does mention that it might be related more to old-school pills, so I guess for younger people, we might not know yet, but that's great to hear for older people. This article doesn't mention how long one must be on the pill for this health benefit, though (or I missed it if it did).

Good idea for a thread!
New Chile quake as Pinera sworn in as president
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8561340.stm
Pinera also owns a commercial tv station and a soccer team. The similarities with Italy's clownish and corrupt prime-minister Berlusconi are frightening. On the other hand, Pinera is known for having fought the Pinochet-regime, so that works to hin benefit. I just hope this shift toward the right will not catch on in the rest of Latin-America.

I'm not interested as much in the earthquake angle of this story, as well in the fact that Sebastian Pinera is now Chile's new president. It's great to see democracy working so well in a country that was a military dictatorship between 1973 and 1990, but on the other hand I'm very concerned with the election of Pinera. Twenty years of centre-left politics have build up the country to Western standards, and instead of being rewarded for that, the left is being wiped out by a right-wing multibillionaire. His presidency ends two decades of left-wing rule in Chile.
The tycoon not only faces the challenge of reconstruction, but takes over from the highly popular Michelle Bachelet, who was the country's first woman president.
Ms Bachelet left office with an 84% popularity rating despite criticism of her government's response to February's 8.8-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami, which left close to 500 people dead.

Black people must leave, NJ Walmart announcer says
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100318/ap_ ... VvcGxlbQ--
I'll be interested in reading a follow-up story, if there is one; I wonder who it was that said that over the loud-speaker. It's a shame that someone said that.

I hope they catch the jerk. I don't blame the store patrons for being upset at the time, but needing counseling is a bit much, IMO. Do they need counseling every time someone makes a racist comment against them or do they need counseling because a racist comment was made over a multimillion dollar corporation's system phone? Things that make you go Hmmmm$mmmmm$mmmm....blackcauldron85 wrote:Black people must leave, NJ Walmart announcer says

I think racism is freaking stupid too...
but I kind of think the incredible concern people have over this incident is a wee bit silly.
First of all, I do very much believe that the person who did this was just doing it to get a reaction.
Then, people overreact and there you go - the dip$h!t got exactly what he wanted.
And then people with their concern... what are they concerned about exactly?
That this will set a pattern of other race-related incidents?
Well, if that's what they were pissing about- they just pretty much guaranteed that it will happen again.
The bigger a deal people make about some things- the more negative attention you give it.
The more you disapprove, the more attractive it becomes to certain social misfits.

As long as she ain't a Rightie - good for her.
He actually made me think about things. And I enjoyed seeing people overreact to being called racists.
It's not the same (unless you're famous) as being called a rapist or child molestor- if they think you are or have done something racist,
people do get-over it. And even if they don't, who the hell cares?
I think most black people eventually see that just because white people say stupid things doesn't mean they hate anyone.
However, with the wave of intense Obama hate... now that's something to take serious issue with. But in the proper time and place.

The wave of Hate that Obama has has more to do with him being President in this day and age then him being black.
Anyway, why do I get the strange feeling that the people overreacting to this are mostly white people? I betcha that's the reason somebody said that over the loudspeaker; to see WHITE people overreact.

That's what some people want to believe. True, a lot of people aren't happy with him as President -ajmrowland wrote:The wave of Hate that Obama has more to do with him being President in this day and age then him being black.
but that's because they've invented him being a socialist and a scary liberal when in reality he couldn't possibly be less of either one.
Almost no one hates him because he's a complete disappointment. Don't fool yourself into thinking that's reason number one.
That would imply that most people actually gave him a chance to begin with and I think you know that isn't true.
People hated him with a passion before he became President and I know you know that.
And since he has, look at people like Glenn Beck and millions of other people saying he hates white people.
Are you telling me that has anything to do with Obama's policies or lack thereof, or things he's done and lack thereof?
Interesting twist of the knife... but I disagree again. It would take a very clever person to come up with that idea.ajmrowland wrote:Anyway, why do I get the strange feeling that the people overreacting to this are mostly white people? And hardly the kind of person who would dare to break-in to WalMart's control room (or whatever) and do what this guy did.

How is this any different then Bush? Millions of people hated Bush before he even took office, said he stole the election and never gave him a chance. Look at all the big personalities that said he hated Black people and caused Katrina out of his racism. Lies of Obama being a scary Marxist (or former Marxist, as his college class mates claim) are similar to the lies of Bush being a fascist Nazi. It's all partisan scare tactics. Obama's presidency is mimicking Bush's in so many ways, that is what has me disappointed and I assume that his 43% approval rating (Bush numbers) reflects America's similar disappointment. Bush did the unpopular thing by entering Iraq, increasing government power with the patriot act and starting the bank bailouts (among other things), and now Obama is doing the unpopular thing by entering Afghanistan and sinking ALL of his attention into trying to pass unpopular health care reform when the economy is the number one concern of Americans, not to mention continuing the Bush bailouts (among other things).Lazario wrote:That's what some people want to believe. I'm not sure why the hate against a white president can be so easily dismissed but the hate against a black president is inexcusable. Unjustified hate is never a good thing but will always be there as long as we continue to have the strong partisans and extremists.

Now that i've thought about...I don't believe the main problem is racism in the country....but that certainly is in the soup of the problem...
I feel....The USA is more divided than ever and its not just because of the color of your skin.....if I were a historian in 30 years from now looking back at these times....I would consider this...into a Cold Civil War of the US....basicly its the Cold war and the Civil war mixed into the same....
Also....have you heard about this....they are actually thinking of putin Corporal Punishment back into schools. ....which I am highly against because I believe if you want to put out a fire...throwing more fire back isn't going to extinguish it.....and it may work for some...buts its not right and it won't fix all the problems.....kids will fear going to school...more drop outs or homeschool will happen....this type of punishment was Banned for a reason....and there's good reason it shouldn't come back

I agree with you that Obama is a terrible President. And I agree on the bailouts and his utter failure to deal with the economy.
But you also have to know those weren't on my hit list for the day. I was talking about racism and I'll continue to, here.
Most of the righties voted for the wrong guy and the majority voted for Gore. During the 2008 election, the righties knew Obama would win.
Almost all of them wanted his and Hilary's head on a stick. Because they were Democrats. For awhile, they were pretty confident Obama couldn't win.
When they realized they were wrong (and I knew about Acorn before November ever came thank you), they knew the
majority would vote for McCain because of racism. It's alive and still thriving! So, they start attacking his birth certificate and harp even more on socialism scare tactics
to perpetuate the same public racist sentiments. And of course - claiming he hates white people. Which is utter bull$h!t. Yet is just perfect because people want to believe it.
There are still many millions of idiots in the U.S. who watch Fox News. They want to believe Obama hates white people because he's a powerful black man.
Yeah, he's a disappointment. But most of the black people who voted for him don't care.
If the hate over Obama had anything to do with simple disappointment - the only people who are voicing disappointment are us gays.
We're the ones who understand the fight he had to fight because of our shared minority issues. And he spit right in our faces, multiple times.
To black people, he's still a hero. And angry white people blamed them before and after the election, they see blacks as responsible for him becoming President.
Which isn't true. Voter fraud is what made him President. But what's the difference? The Right are using racism to get white people to hate him. They have all along.
What he and others implied is that Bush and the people he appointed to help the victims of Katrina were apathetic because they were black
(as in- why should they care anyway?), that they were cheap in what little efforts they made to help, and lazy in getting anything done in a reasonable amount of time.
Meanwhile, while they weren't doing anything- MAJOR devastation was being caused to homes and property and these people were suffering.
Yet, countless people weren't paying attention because many of the victims were black. And it's a fact Bush and the people he appointed to take care of this problem
did not care and did practically nothing to help anyone. That was more than enough reason for any "personality" to say at least what Kanye said about Bush!!
I'm really not sure what kind of point you were trying to make with that example, but you have no hope of making Bush look like a lesser or equal evil to Obama when you mention Katrina.
I don't really recall hearing them prior to the moment it was announced that Gore wasn't President anymore.
Certainly that's a prime example of fascism in U.S. history if there ever was one. Though we both know Obama was called a socialist before he "won" in '08.
It's practically a non-issue now to people like you because you know he's scum for reasons that have nothing to do with his race.
But there is still proof of widespread racism against this guy that has nothing to do with what he's actually doing in office.

What's wrong with this picture?
Why not just strap some raw beef steaks on her body and jump in a shark tank? Or pour honey on her body and lay next to a fire ant hill?
According to her blog, she was an avid outdoor's woman...who didn't mind trapping a fox now and then for its fur. She said on her blog she wanted to get a wolf next....well....karma, its a bitch. I'm sorry, I don't feel bad for her. I don't walk in my local nature hikes alone, and I am no where near as remote as she is and unless I am near water (which has gators), the top predators (bears and panthers) are very docile in Florida and rarely attack humans. When you go out in nature, you are no longer the top dog. Now 2 wolves had to be killed because of her stupidity. Its one thing if these wolves came down into the neighborhood, I'd say kill them then, but this was a jogger in the remote wilderness, running triggers prey drive in predators. Whether it was a wolf, bear, or mountain lion, this woman was gonna get killed one of these days for taking nature for granted

Here's a BIG one:
http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/18721938
Some 15 year old boy tried to murder his girlfriend's friend because she was talking about a family member of his who committed suicide. He appearently
was so upset about what she said, he told all his friends he was going to murder this girl and the only reason she lived is because
a teacher stopped him in time to get the girl rushed to the hospital. When they got her to the hospital, they had to remove part of her skull-
he had beaten her so severely that her head was swelling on the inside.
That sound shocking to you? It's damn sick, so it should sound shocking. But here's the kicker... there were several witnesses to the event
who did absolutely nothing to stop him. Child psychologists say this is becoming a big trend because... violence in entertainment
and kids communicating with each other too much online and through text messages is causing them to think of each other as machines instead of people.
Obviously, this is of interest to me because I've been watching horror movies and gory films for nearly two decades now.
My job is to immediately say claims like kids become desensitized by violent movies are ridiculous. However... that's not the first thought
that came to mind when I was listening to the interview with the psychologist. The first thing I thought of is how I've always disliked
the trend of trying to make today's horror films more violent, featuring torture and many forms of self-mutilation (usually to free oneself from a deadly trap
or physically get out of a tight spot). Obviously, these kinds of kids play more video games than they go to movies like Saw.
And I think there are very few people who collect these kinds of movies because they enjoy seeing torture that much. It would be pretty
disturbing if they cheered torture and sadistic violence because they think the victims deserve to be tortured, as though they were real people.
But the torture films are a part of our culture, like all movies they try and reflect the issues and mentality of the time they're made in.
At the very least, I can say these "extreme" survival and torture films aren't helping people. Where horror films used to be cathartic,
now they're just boring and excessive. I know that movies aren't really to blame.
This news article has struck a cord with me though because... both the victim's insensitivity and the attacker's "rage" are symptomatic of some
serious problems that we should really look at. Or acknowledge. Of course there's no hope of really fixing or helping things,
but at least we might know better who is fueling the fire of the rising violence against young people.

Huh? What? Voter fraud made Obama president?Lazario wrote:Which isn't true. Voter fraud is what made him President.

Please don't say you have fallen for the 'Acorn' crap. That's paranoïd stuff they talk about on Fox News. No, you're way too smart to believe that. You must be talking about George Bush, but worded it not too good.
As I recall it, the accusations of Bush being a 'nazi' came much later, long after he took office. I believe people called him a 'nazi' or a 'facist' because of the concentration camp he set up at Guántanamo Bay, where he allowed (ordered?) suspects to get tortured. Bush also used so-called 'signing statements' to get laws approved without the permission of Congress, which is unconstitutional. Bush also had something called the 'Patriot Act', which includes a lot of things that eat away the freedom and privacy of citizens.Lazario wrote:Really? I'd like to hear some details about what Bush did before November 2000 that earned him nicknames such as "fascist" and "Nazi."
I don't really recall hearing them prior to the moment it was announced that Gore wasn't President anymore.
Now it's true that Obama has (unfortunately!) not done much about those practices and even continues to use the unconstitutional powers that were accumulated by Bush. But that's not why the "tea party" people are calling him a facist. They could care less about that; they didn't care about that when Bush was in power. They call him a nazi because he wants to fix health care. It makes no sense at all.
I'd say the leftwing had very good, empirically funded, reasons to call Bush a facist and a nazi. You only have to take a look at Guantanamo Bay again. Calling Obama a nazi because he wants to change health care or because he wants to raise taxes on millionaires, however, makes no sense at all. The underlying reason is, indeed, racism.
Does jpanimation thinks the "tea party" people would have asked for a *white* Democrat's birth certificate? Do you think they would "accuse" a *white* Democratic president of being a muslim, or of palling around with terrorists?
By the way, I object to calling Obama 'scum' or a failure. He has been disappointing, but I think the bulk of the blame has to be laid with Congress, which is just very ineffectual. Just today I read a long article detailing the workings and processes of American politics and now, I'm convinced your political system is totally ridiculous and the reason nothing ever gets done --because the minority gets far too much to say, and a sinle senator from a little, thin-populated state can block any kind of reform if he wants to.
For anything to change, the system has to change. But with only two parties, tied up by corporate funding, I don't see that happening in the near future.
Well, we do live in a time where our political leaders and news outlets downplay torture. They call it "enhanced interrogation" instead, and they cheer it on. They say Abu Graib was just an "incident" and that waterboarding is "legally justified". Lower military personell that did the actual torture are being pardoned by the president, and those who ordered the torture to be done are now 'political analysts' on Fox News. And after all, those people that we tortured weren't real people anyway, were they? Just some brown people with long filthy beards, who have no feeling anyway, right?Lazario wrote:But the torture films are a part of our culture, like all movies they try and reflect the issues and mentality of the time they're made in. At the very least, I can say these "extreme" survival and torture films aren't helping people. Where horror films used to be cathartic,
now they're just boring and excessive. I know that movies aren't really to blame.
What kind of message does that send?
CBC member: Health bill protesters called lawmakers the N-word
Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) said Saturday that healthcare protesters at the Capitol directed racial epithets at him and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) as they walked outside.
Carson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus along with Lewis, told The Hill that protesters called the lawmakers the N-word.
[...]
Asked if racial epithets were yelled at him, Lewis responded, "Yes, but it's OK. I've heard this before in the '60s. A lot of this is just downright hate."
