Pixar's Day & Night

Post by JDCB1986 »

I searched and couldn't find a thread for this, it's the short that will come before Toy Story 3.

From Coming Soon.

Exclusive: First Look at Pixar Short Day & Night!
Source:Disney•Pixar

ComingSoon.net has your exclusive first look at the Pixar short that will play in front of Toy Story 3 theaters on June 18. The short, titled "Day & Knight," was directed by Teddy Newton and is described as follows:

When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other's unique qualities--and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world--the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.

Looks (and sounds) promising.

The above image is just concept art, right? Pixar wouldn't produce a 2D thetrical short, would it?

Interesting concept. Hope I like it. was disappointed in Partly cloudy. I want more shorts on the level of Presto.

And I wouldnt assume they wouldnt do a theatrical 2d short. this is the first time I can think of that they have used a 2d piece to promo an upcoming short. and these character designs look like they wouldnt work as well in 3d, so I'd be willing to bet that yes, it'll be 2d.

kyle, i agree with you about partly cloudy. while it was funny, it sure didnt result in the belly laughs produced by presto or lifted.

to me, partly cloudy was simply an interesting idea, as far as storks and babies go. reminded me of dumbo

I thought Partly Cloudy was rather touching, actually.

According to Jerry Beck, "The images “inside” the characters will be CG, but Day and Night is essentially a 2D short. The character animation is all hand drawn."

Sounds fun.

Awesome! I don't remember if it was Pete Docter or somebody else at Pixar who said a long time ago that the idea isn't too of the question of them making a hand-drawn animated film. So, looks like he will definitely be seeing this quite soon. :) I really like the Monsters, Inc. opening and this looks like it might be in a similar style.

"your friend the Rat" seems like a more accurate comparison.

Random thought: I'd totally buy that graphic on a t-shirt.

I immediately thought of UPA when I saw the pic (which indeed created Mr. Magoo) and automatically figured it would be CG within the "frames" of hand drawn characters. :)

I'm really excited to see this short!

I remember a while ago Lassater had said something along the lines of Pixar possibly working with hand-drawn animation someday. He said something about people inside the studio seriously wanting to make a feature-film that was hand-drawn. Maybe this is a pre-curser and sign of that actually happening.

I love "Your Friend The Rat!" And I love the song: ♫...we'll follow you to Mars, or where ever you people go...♫ So catchy!

T-shirts = awesomeness 8)

After giving a speech, Lasseter presented the premiere of Teddy Newton's short Day & Night which will be running in front of Toy Story 3. The short was shown in 3D and it's another fairly innovative dialogue-free short involving two 2-dimensional "Schmoo"-like creatures who display 3D animation scenes on their bodies. The general idea is that one is always showing daytime scenes, while the other is always showing night, and the short cleverly juxtaposed the two things as the characters interacted.

I sometimes look forward to the shorts more than the films. :)

This one looks cool and I'm glad to see them experimenting with a 2D/CGI mix. Definitely looks like UPA. :)

My girlfriend loved Partly Cloudy and I thought it was nice. Presto is a much more Warner Bros type toon and that definitely appealed to me. :)

The few pics I've seen for this look extremely interesting and artistic. Perhaps the most stylish Pixar short yet!

It does make me wonder what this will mean for Disney's hand drawn animation department. I know Pooh's in production, but will this urge them to greenlight more projects? Or, as Pixar studios is growing significantly, will the next 2D project be produced primarily BY Pixar? That would definately be ironic...
