Anyone else here unemployed and totally screwed by the economy? Let's talk about it. Or even better. Tell us how you managed to get a job! Or, tell us your fears of possibly getting laid off.

I've applied to 35 places and have yet to hear back. Unemployment over here is killing my chances of getting a job. Even McDonalds and Wallmart isn't hiring, WTF? Right now I'm living off my savings that are going fast.

My parents work at an energy company where they've had massive lay-offs and have the remaining working non-paid overtime just to turn a profit (they can overwork because people are grateful just to have a job). The government is forcing them to sell electricity at such a cheap rate that the company had been operating in the red so they had massive lay-offs just to break even. If the Cap and Trade crap (environmental aka tax scam) passes, they'll be jobless.

My brother is a cop and was recently laid off by a corrupt mayor (was hiring 20 cops, after police union endorses a recall of the elected mayor, lays-off 100 cops), who ended the lay-offs right at his nephew, but then hired them back after stimulus funds were discovered (that he no longer will be miss-spending due to the bad publicity he got).

All I have to say is I'm tired of the government screwing up and having us pay for it

I'm unemployed, and didnt get unemployment. so i've been living off my savings. it sucks.

As of right now, I am still employed, even though the job can be slow and reptetitive at times (Still better than having no job at all).

I've been job hunting for a year and a half, with no luck. The closest I've come lately (I haven't even had an interview in a really, really long time) was a month or so ago, a lady left a message on my phone, but I called her back about 3 times (3 different days), and she never called me back.

It's hard for me to stay motivated. I was volunteering on Saturday, and a guy I knew and some ofhis coworkers were volunteering, and they said that their company is hiring; the guy sent me the link, but I have yet to look at it. No motivation.

What's even harder is that with all the layoffs. there are really qualified people out there competing for jobs with people with little experience.

I would say try volunteering or getting an internship. Internships are hard to get if you're not a student, but volunteering is always there. It shows that you're not just sitting on your butt not doing anything. Of course, that hasn't gotten me hired, but if nothing else, you're doing good, and you can make contacts.

This is true.

I was really hoping there would have been an economic upswing by this point. It's horrible to graduate in this economy. It makes grad school seem like a good idea.

People I know are getting their law degrees and various business acolades, and are still jobless...this is truly a rough time.

He means school is a good idea, because that way you're not out in the world unemployed, you're in school living off loans and don't have to worry about finding a job in this economic mess.

Yes, but hopefully by the time you're done with school (months or even years from now), the economy will be better and your chances of getting a job will be higher.

Here's my story:

I had a pretty decent career going in the entertainment industry. I graduated college in '07 and moved to LA to start my career. I had some good entry level jobs going, then in October of last year I quit my job to start my way to my "dream" career -- I got a position as an Executive Assistant at a prestigious network on a tv show. Amazing, right? Wrong. The woman I was assisting was one of the most horrible people on the planet. Think Devil Wears Prada. She hated me the day I walked in for the job (which didn't make any sense because she interviewed me). I would take thorough notes on what she would ask me to do and I would do it for her. Then she would tell me she asked for it a different way. I showed her my notes, but then she said I was just a crappy note taker. She would call me into her office to scream at me (with the door open) at things that either weren't my fault or that I didn't do something she asked me to do -- when she never asked me. She would tell everyone total lies about me - like I didn't start a project until a certain day or time, when she clearly knew I spent more time on it because she SAW me do it. Anyway, I found out later that the creator of the show quit the show because she was so horrible. She's never kept an assistant longer than 6 months.

Every night I would cry, I would never sleep, and every morning I would wake up with a lump in my throat that wouldn't go away until the end of the day. I didn't even feel like an assistant. I was a scape goat for whatever was going on in her life. I was never happy and it was affecting my life. I couldn't stay with it anymore. I stuck it out 4 months before quitting. Of course, I quit at the time when 1 in 5 California residents were out of work.

It's been a little over eight months and I still haven't found work. I thought that since I had a career it would help me get a job, but that is not the case. I'm temping a little here and there and worked on a few projects but it's not enough. I'm depressed again, almost as much as I was when I had a job. I'm applying to about 8 jobs a day and I haven't had an interview since August. I don't know what to do. Retail places won't even hire me.

blackcauldron85, what kind of places do you volunteer? Do they have anything to do with what you want to do?

Anyway, I'm currently working part-time at a grocery store, but I usually work ~40 hours a week. I don't think I have to worry about not having my job because there aren't a lot of people in our dept.... in fact, it's just the dept. manager, myself, two night crew guys, and two kids that are cashiers but help out in our dept. I don't think I have anything to worry about at the moment.

Maybe things are a little better in Minnesota, but I have a hard time believing that even retail (and the dreaded food service) places aren't hiring. I've been managing the front desk at a hair salon for a couple of years and the front desk turnout rate is huge. Since a lot of people think of it as a temporary sort of position they'll start, work for a while, and then quit when it become to difficult to balance their other job/school/whatever. Even when we aren't hiring, I always accept (and look seriously) at applications and I usually end up calling them back at some point.

In fact I've been having the toughest time FINDING someone to work as an assistant manager with me, who will hopefully take over when I'm done with grad school next year. Either people want full-time (a position I'm not able to give them until I leave for good) or get scared away when they see how much the job actually entails.

I am definitely not implying that people in this thread are this way, but some of the people who are complaining about a lack of jobs really don't want work. That is really unfair for you guys out there who are seriously looking and can't find anything.

Having to work for mean people is the worst.

I don't have just one type of job that I'm looking for, so the types of volunteer work that I do could be related to what I want to do. I do a lot of different projects, from walking dogs to digging and putting down mulch to playing Bingo at a rehabilitation place to cleaning cages...lots of different things. I'm a project coordinator with the group I do the most volunteering with, so I lead projects, essentially managing the other volunteers, but that management experience hasn't made anyone want to hire me.

Maybe we all should move to Minnesota and work in the hair salon!!!

What I've also learned in life now is that having a degree does NOT equal a good job, or hell even a job.
