Interesting article, but I really don't think that guy will win his lawsuit. His book was published 7 months before Nemo came out and it takes at least what...3 years to produce one of those films? I'm not saying that the French guy copied, but its not likely that Pixar did either.

From someone who works in publishing, these figures do not make sense:

"He paid $71,000 of his own money to publish 2,000 copies of the book in November 2002"

Let's say he gets the about $20 for each book, half of which goes to the book story, more if he used a distributor. So at most he got $10 per book (assuming the $20 cover price). So he published his book for a net loss of $51,000. What?

If the prices in France are the same as in Norway the book could cost over $30

He still would loose money, but not as much as before.

You must also remember that he might have done this to promote himself in France (selling books even though he lose money).

I dont know about this one

To me the Lion King was clearly a rip off right down to similar names.

This one does not look like it though, the timing is all wrong.

Yeah, I mean who would have thought of an African story using a name like "Simba" for its lion?!

Simba? You mean the Swahili word for 'lion'? I would never have thought about using that either!

whats makes me sad is not that people do come with these totaly idiotic accusations but that so many automaticly belive them.

Just like the accusations where the southern babtists say that they can see something dirty in the little mermaid. I have even here seen posts that clearly states that the poster belives this as a fact.

Clowns are scary. Well, I think so anyway. Remember Pennywise the Clown from IT? Or the Chief Clown from Greatest Show in the Galaxy?

Anyhow:

Selected highlights:

Nemo finds way to French court

Franck Le Calvez is suing Disney and animation studios Pixar for copyright infringement and breach of trademark. He has applied for all books and merchandise featuring Nemo to be banned from French shops before the main copyright case is heard in November.

...

Lawyers for Le Calvez said the first 30,000 copies of Pierrot the Clown Fish, published in November 2002, had sold out. But a second edition in October last year sold few copies because bookshops did not want to stock it alongside Disney's Nemo books, they said.

"This is precisely the kind of case where our French legislation protects us against globalisation," said Marie-Catherine Brocherieux, one of Le Calvez's lawyers. "We have been able to fight back, because we are the ones who have been copied."

...

A lawyer for Hachette, which publishes the Nemo books in France, said the firm stood to lose €700,000 (£472,000) between now and November.

It's just like the Larry Potter woman, who turned out to be a total fraud. The dirty Disney 'hidden' messages are probably mostly or entirely misnomers, but a lot of people believe in them b/c they want to, they just think it makes it more interesting... I wouldn't blame it on the Baptists though. I'm not a Baptist or anything, I just don't think the blame falls on them (there are plenty of Baptists who don't buy it, I'm sure, and plenty of people who do who aren't Baptist).

Well, the story has a happy ending:
PARIS -- A French children's book author who claimed Disney's blockbuster Finding Nemo copied a fish of his creation, was convicted of fraud Wednesday and ordered to pay about $80,000 US in damages and legal fees.

How can Pixar Animation steal something that hasn't even been published yet? It's retarded! These people need to find something better to do. I mean Pixar begin production of Finding Nemo like a few years after his book was published. I think this is just another publicity stunt. But it seems like a huge coincidence. Maybe he stole the idea from Disney.

Possibly 4 years. That's how long it took to make The Incredibles.

It's amazing how these people come out of the woodwork. I was reading today (change of topic) that the family of the co-writer of David Bowie's song Space Oddity was suing him for royalties. That was like 35 years ago. Why did they wait until now? Don't you think if it was really his works he would of made it into a film before Disney did. Why did he wait a couple years to do anything about it?
