Dumbo: Special Edition Blu-ray and DVD Discussion
I think I am in genuine shock after reading the news on the front page. What does this mean for Fantasia/Fantasia 2000. This is really coming out of left field. What do you think???

We've just gotten news from Disney that the next animated classic slated for Platinum Edition treatment after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is Dumbo, scheduled for release next February.
Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 had previously been announced, while others anticipated an Alice in Wonderland re-release to tie in with Tim Burton's mixed-medium filming coming to theaters next spring. Dumbo was not one of the ten best-selling titles originally chosen for the Platinum collection (which is supposed to be branded "Diamond" starting with Snow White), nor was it one of the four bonus titles admitted in 2003.
While I am glad Dumbo is getting a good release (at least I hope so this time) Perhaps they are thinking about doing 3 diamond/platinum whatever you wanna call it a year or something....and the Fantasia's could be in like the summer or July and a differ title around October/November
Or Perhaps Fantasia is now going to be released just not within the diamon/platinum line......I frankly don't care what "line" they release under....as long as its released at the end of the day call me Happy Camper Russell

Here's what I posted on Blu-ray.com:
Anyone else agree?I could see them releasing Dumbo as a Platinum in February and the Fantasias as Diamonds in March. They could be continuing both lines in some way.

I agree! I don't get how Disney prioritise their DVDs...? Dumbo has had a couple of DVD releases, Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 should be released next spring and if it's not I'll beBarbossa wrote:I just read the news on the homepage as well. That's odd. I really was hoping for Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 next spring. I think Fantasia deserves a re-release before Dumbo.
Does this mean Robin Hood will eventually get Platinum status?

Re: Dumbo: Platinum Edition- Discussion
I'll agree with you on having Dumbo:Diamond Editon being a curveball from the left field. Like fellow members of UD I was also expectin to see Walt's Alice In Wonderland arrive on Diamond Editon.MutantEnemy wrote:I think I am in genuine shock after reading the news on the front page. As for Fantasia/2000 I think The Concert Feature will arrive Fall '010

You can call them pickle me pink edition for all I care....as long as they are released with top notch bonus features and a terrific transfer and they get released next year.....and I hope disney doens't forget about Destino release....

Well, I did post in another thread that Les Perkins told me he was working on bonus features for a new Dumbo release. I'm surprised, but not shocked by the news. Outside of Disney fans, Fantasia appeals to a more sophisticated crowd, but so far the Platinum/Diamond titles have all had mass appeal, from toddlers to elderly. I also think Fantasia would be hard to market in the line and will fare better through a different release. However, I don't think it has been confirmed that it was dropped from the line. It could just be pushed back to Spring 2011.
Not only is Dumbo a wonderful film, but it is also very significant to Disney history. It was made for less than half the cost of a typical animated feature and actually made money, which greatly helped the studio through the war. It fared well through subsequent releases in theaters, on television, and home video. And there is at least one Dumbo attraction at every Disney resort around the world, and two at Disneyland.
I wonder if there is a Dumbo spin-off in the works? I've heard that Disney Toon Studios has been working on a project outside of the Tinker Bell films that is a spin-off of another classic Disney property. Perhaps it is Dumbo related and the release is being done to build anticipation the way Peter Pan was moved up in the release schedule?

Hmm....interesting....suddenly this post about a domain name disney copyrighted might make a little sense...now that you mention it...could "The Tiger King" be something of the realm of Dumbo???.

October 6th needs to get here so that we can watch the opening previews to Snow White and figure out what the hell is going on.

Maybe, although the title doesn't sound like it has very much to do with the circus. If Disney Toon Studios is working on a Dumbo spin-off, I would expect it to be about another animal from the same circus. But perhaps it is about a young tiger who against all odds becomes the star of the show, thus becoming the "king" of the circus? I don't know. It's all speculation at the moment and we could be way off, but it sounds possible.disneyboy20022 wrote:Hmm....interesting....suddenly this post about a domain name disney copyrighted might make a little sense...now that you mention it...could "The Tiger King" be something of the realm of Dumbo???

Well Bongo (Fun and Fancy Free) was suppose to be a stand alone follow up to Dumbo yet the idea of a follow up for Dumbo was dropped for unknown reasons.goofystitch wrote:If Disney Toon Studios is working on a Dumbo spin-off, I would expect it to be about another animal from the same circus. Then there's the canceled Dumbo 2 which would've taken place a day or 2 after the orignal. Dumbo would've met new characters and help 'em discover their own special traits.

Something along the lines of Bongo would be most welcome, but if this is a resurrection of Dumbo 2, I'll be mad. It looked aweful, based on the preview from the 60th Anniversary Edition.Mason_Ireton wrote: Well Bongo (Fun and Fancy Free) was suppose to be a stand alone follow up to Dumbo yet the idea of a follow up for Dumbo was dropped for unknown reasons.

Does anybody know if the Big Top Edition was quietly discontinued? I asked Les Perkins how much planning goes into a Platinum/Diamond Edition and he said about 6 months, so when he told me in July that he was working on Dumbo, I would have expected WDSHE to have already discontinued manufacturing the current release.

The Big Top Edition has been discontinued as of... January? Sometime earlier this year.goofystitch wrote:Something along the lines of Bongo would be most welcome, but if this is a resurrection of Dumbo 2, I'll be mad.
