[France] "The Black Caldron" Finally Releases !

Post by Jordan »

Hey guys !
I've got nice news fro some of you !!

"The Black Caldron" ("Taram et le Chaudron magique" in French) is finally going to be released in France, 3 years after the Region 1 Set and almost as much as after the Belgium set !

The DVD will come on April 30th and it seems that it'd be the same as the Region 1 release (and as the Belgium one). English, and orignial French Tracks (not the awful redone one that appeared on the French laserdic), original 1.66 aspect ratio.

Well, that's true that anyone in France who love this movie may have already bought the Region 1 release which is really cheap in stores.

But it still great news :)

I'm not so jealous about the time we had to wait to have the movie edited on DVd, because in France, we had the Sleeping Beauty Special Edition a year and an half before the USA, and still have the 2-disc Collector's Edition of Peter Pan (released a year ago) which hasn't been released elsewhere yet ! :D
Chandler (to Phoebe, over the phone) : Listen, Joey isn't gonna be here tonight so why don't you come over and I'll let you uh.. feel my bicep; or maybe more...

Nobody seemed interrsted in that but I keep going :)

If have great news today 'bout that edition !! IT WILL BE BETTER THAN ANY OF THE SETS ALREADY RELEASED !

Here's what's more :

- The ORIGINAL 2.35 transfer enhanced for 16/9 Television (contrary to the 4/3 of the R1)
- THX Certefied
- Image and Sound Digitally Remastered
- Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 in French !

Plus, the original bonus features of the other sets ! So, maybe it was worth the wait to have a so good edition ! That's true that BVHE FRance always want to do betther than the other ones about DVD that we waited long for...

Here's the artwork :

I'm not really interested in the Black Cauldron - I saw it on release, and thought it was one of the most boring films I'd ever seen. However, could you tell me one thing - do you know any French dvd web sites that might still have snow white in stock? :-)
Just release every Disney full-length toon on DVD - now, damn you!

I feel a bit mean asking you something and not saying anything positive about your news! :(

OK - I prefer the French title to the English one. 'Taran and the Magic Cauldron' definitely sounds better than 'The Black Cauldron'. :)

Not sure if I like that cover all that much, but I've never really liked any cover for "The Black Cauldron" yet. They need to be "darker".
Dust? Anyone? No?

I read your next post :)

Snow White in France ? Wow... I had the chance to find it last July on a website during the sales for €18 ! I took the last copy ! :)
Right now the only you'll find is used copies or new directly to people but really expensive.

However, here's some french links, of good buying websites :
- amazon.fr
- fnac.com
- alapage.com

Sorry for SW... :)

IT IS ENHANCED FOR 16X9 TELEVISIONS?!!!!! I'm so jealous!!!!! I have the American DVD and it has the crappiest transfer for a Disney movie ever! Jordan, when you have the chance to watch it, could you tell us if the transfer looks restored in some way?
Even if it isn't, the anamorphic enhancement is worth it already!

I don't like the French cover. In my opinion the dutch cover looks very nice:

I agree with you, the logo is too big and in the middle and it is this way for almost every title in France (that's why I sometimes get the US ones ! :) no kidding.... I get the US ones 'cos they're sometimes better. Not in that case apparently :-)

Thanks for the French web addresses Jordan!

Grrr...I just know I won't be able to buy Snow White at a reasonable price until the next release in 2008.

BTW, have you ever read any of Sylvain Chomet's Casterman albums? I'd love to know what they're like. I didn't realise this, but he worked for Disney for four months - a period of employment that suggests he wasn't very happy there! (in fact, he wasn't!).

We had DTS on The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean. And we will get DTS on Finding Nemo. And I'm very happy that they don't put a Dutch spoken DTS track on it. The English voices are so beautyfull!

tooniac I feel so bad for you.
I went to a Virgin Megastore in Paris today and there was at least 40 copies of the French 2-disc Collector's Edition of Snow White for 35€ !
I'm so sorry

As for me, I picked up the Region 1 copy of The Lion King 1 1/2, it looks good ! :)

Well, if I lived in France I would really be happy since the Black Cauldron is one of my favorite Disney movies. I like the European cover more than the American one because I think Eilonwy and Hen Wen deserve to be in the cover, not just Taran. The only things I don't like about that cover is that the artist seemed to be teasing the cauldron, that does not look like it at all, the hole is wider than that, and where are Creeper and the Horned King, they should be on the cover too. Eilonwy also looks a bit weird...

Yes, it has also been released on NTSC in Japan. It has the documentary on the 9 old men that is not available in the U.S.

No, it is not. The differences betwen the two editions are no as big as it could have been, but the additions to the French set (which I'm proud to have :D ) are wonderful and do make the difference. Specially the 25-minute "Nine Old Men" featurette and the 1924 movie version of "Peter Pan" that was seen by uncle Walt when he was a child. Also, there are aditional galleries and a Silly Symphonies cartoon (Playful Pan) ;)

Hey, has anyone here gotten the French "Black Cauldron"? Is the picture quality really THX-worth? I know the anamorphic enhancement is worth the disc alone, but it doesn't help a lot if the quality is as crappy as the current R1 disc.
