Whoa! My Wal-Mart Just Had A Disney Overload!

Post by Neal »

I'm equally shocked and disappointed. Beginning January 2008, I decided to collect all the Disney Animated Classics and their derivatives (prequels, midquels, sequels, interquels) on DVD. This has been a long, drawn-out task as so many titles are out of print and vaulted. I've been doing sales on this forum here, buying off e-bay, buying off online retailers, making trips to my closest Best Buy (an hour away), and perusing second hand shops. It's been exciting to find each new title but sometimes I've had to overspend a little when I found a title, not knowing when I'd spot it again.

Then, last night, I go to my Wal-Mart and find it chock full of many of the tiles I worked tirelessly to seek out.

Up until this point, my Wal-Mart has had a thin selection of DACs/Derivatives:

Robin Hood
The Fox and the Hound
The Fox and the Hound 2
The AristoCats
101 Dalmatians II: Special Edition
Peter Pan in Return to Neverland
Tinker Bell
The Emperor's New Groove: New Groove Edition

...that's been it for two years. Last night, they had expanded the Disney section into two separate locations. They gave the end of an aisle to all Disney movies, plus have stuffed some other DACs in amongst other random live-action DVDs.

Here are some of the titles they added that they NEVER have had in the last two years:

Leroy & Stitch
Kronk's New Groove
The Rescuers
The Rescuers Down Under
Atlantis: Milo's Return
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Friendship Edition
Treasure Planet
Hercules
Home on the Range
Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers

Valiant

...and live-action, too:

Flight of the Navigator
Darby O' Gill and the Little People
Old Yeller
The Black Hole
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The Strongest Man in the World
A Knight in Camelot
The Parent Trap
Swiss Family Robinson

...what's up with that? Anyone else have any of their box stores recently do a Disney stocking frenzy? I realize it was my prerogative to go search out the DACs/Derivatives and buy them, but still, now that many of the titles I drove an hour for and spent an extra $5 on are within ten minutes of my house I feel disappointed and cheated.

But that's not my point, I'm just curious why Wal-Mart would have done this and if anyone else has noticed anything similar at their local stores.

Plus, are could any of these titles grab some cash if I bought them and re-sold them because of vaulting and OOP?

Looks like the Disney sections at stores here in Aus aren't that bad afterall, although we don't have The Friendship Edition!

Hercules was reissued here, too, for the sake of adding DMR points. My nearest Best Buy also has tHoND.

I stopped in Wal Mart today, and I walked past the Disney section, and they also had the titles you mentioned. I thought it was weird that they had all of them, maybe next week I will stop in and pick up a few.

I haven't been to Wal-Mart for a few days, but they didn't have that new stuff last time I checked. They probably have it now though. Are the prices generally still around 15 give or take? Not surprisingly low or anything? I have most of the stuff mentioned, but not all. Badly need the Dexter Riley films since they're top faves of mine and yet I haven't bought them... Anyway, I'll likely visit tomorrow since I'm picking up the Indiana Jones figures really cheap there lately, so I'll check what they have. It's kind of annoying, because I just got Atlantis: Milo's Return, and I had to pay 19.99 for it (which is ridiculously overpriced, but I haven't seen it cheaper since the year it came out, when I was broke). I'm sure Wal-Mart has it cheaper (maybe). I do need Leroy and Stitch still, plus Valiant and some of that live-action stuff...

That was my annoyance! I bought Atlantis: Milo's Return from walmart.com because I had never, ever seen it anywhere else (and I had been having some issues with ebay at tge tune). It was $21 after tax and all. Then, yesterday, it's randomly at Wal-Mart for $15!

Anyways, at my Wal-Mart, it's $13 for titles like Hercules, Treasure Planet, and Home on the Range. $15 for most of the sequels. $19.99 for the new stuff like Meet the Robinsons.

Mine is the same way... I picked up the last copy of Pocahontas Special Edition while I still could :)

Although I was kind of miffed to see Hercules there... I thought the lack of Hercules dvds would have meant something good to come -_-

For some reason, I don't go around collecting the sequels. Maybe I will, but I'm still under my parents' jurisdiction, so don't usually buy more than one or two movies in a shopping trip. Hercules, I might hold out for a special edition, if i could help it. The still-non anamorphic transfer somewhat puzzles me, as they'd only have to change the encode.

Someone has Hercules for 10 bucks this week. It's either Target or Best Buy. I think Target. Just check the weekly ads on their sites.

Anyway, yeah, I hate the way titles will disappear suddenly, right when you're finally able to purchase them. Then, after a long time and usually after you pay some rip-off place too much to get them, they reappear in stores. Or, like with Pocahontas, when I finally bought it, no one had it with the slipcover. Now, it's everywhere again and WITH the slipcover. I'll probably have to settle for Mulan 2 without the slipcover also, if I don't break down and just get the two-pack, since it's only a few bucks more. But I already have the first film and every buck counts for me! I'd like to find Mulan 2 on its own really cheap somewhere... They rarely put the ones I'm lacking on sale, like Belle's Magical World. Maybe after I buy it for 19.99 it will appear at 15 at Wal-Mart, ha.

Atlantis: Milo's Return was the first one I missed from Disney's animated releases, and I missed a lot after that which I'm still playing catch up with. Nearly caught up with the theatrical stuff (still need Valiant and the Blu-Ray of The Wild, and James and the Giant Peach though I'm not a fan of that one...), finally got Home on the Range and at a miraculously low-price (Target had it for 10 bucks one week), but I still have a lot of direct to video stuff to get (Leroy and Stitch, Mulan 2, Springtime with Roo, Search for Christopher Robin, Belle's Magical World, Kim Possible a Stitch in Time, Pooh: Seasons of Giving, the Valentine and Frankenpooh/spookable Pooh releases, and a few lesser titles, like I want one of the Small World of Fun releases because of an exclusive short). I also wouldn't mind getting a few of the Special Edition rereleases I missed because of the better picture quality, like Dumbo and Aristocats. But really, I have so much catching up to do with the live-action, and that's what I'm really curious about price-wise and am really watching Wal-Mart and Best Buy for right now. Best Buy put some of that stuff on sale a few times over the past few months, and I got a lot, but I'm still missing A TON.

wow american disney DVDs are way overpriced! films like The Rescuers, JatGP, Hercules, Home on the Range, Pocahontas, Tarzan, HOND and all of the sequels are 8.99 AUD (about 6USD), whilst special edition DVDs like Dumbo, The Aristocats, Many Adventures, all the pixar movies and Meet the Robinsons etc are 15.99AUD (12USD?). Although your CDs and Blu-rays tend to be cheaper.

However we do miss out on some DVDs such as The Frienship Edition and the re-release Sword film.

slave2moonlight - Yeah, here's what I need to get for DACs/Derivatives on DVD:

Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas
The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride
Hercules: Zero to Hero (VHS only, unfortunately)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio
Oliver & Company
Beauty and the Beast
BOLT

I didn't know The Wild and James and the Giant Peach had Blu-rays. I might get those some day. I've been wanting to see The Wild, and I just re-watches James on Thursday in anticipation of seeing Coraline soon.

As for Grievance of a Starmaker (I'm assuming this is your exclusive short) I rented that volume of It's a Small World of Fun from my library and used my school's equipment to record the short into the computer. I'm planning on making a shorts compilation DVD for myself with One by One, Matchgirl, Starmaker and the other recent shorts.

Yuki- I didn't think our cover was so bad for Pooh. Do you have a picture of yours?

Actually, I didn't mean James and the Giant Peach on Blu-Ray, just DVD. The only animated one on Blu-Ray I was talking about was "The Wild". I still need a lot of others on Blu-Ray, but as I have them on standard DVD I can wait till I catch up with the other stuff. The only Disney Blu-Rays I currently have (because they weren't double-dips for me) are Wall-E, TinkerBell, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Meet the Robinsons, unless I'm forgetting something. I do have one double dip for blu-ray: Sleeping Beauty. I don't have an HDTV yet, so Blu-Ray's just look like standard def to me, which is why I'm not in a rush for them, but I don't want to buy anything now on standard def if it is available on blu. No sense in falling even more behind, ha. Another Blu-Ray I have from Disney is the Hannah Montana concert. I can't think of any others offhand.

Yes, I need Bolt as well, of course, ha. And yep, Grievance of a Starmaker is the one I was talking about. I also need that Chip n Dale DVD just in case their starring shorts never make it to the Treasures line, and possibly some other shorts that were not released in the Treasures line but only offered as bonus features, like with live-action features. I also remembered recently that I never got The Proud Family movie or that Teacher's Pet movie, or the Recess DVDs that were released, so I need those too, and some random releases of Disney TV shows that never got boxed sets (like Goof Troop, Quack Pack, New Adv. of Pooh, and various Aladdin and Little Mermaid episodes released on the Princess Stories DVDs). I'm still unsure if I want that one DVD that features Mickey's Around the World in 80 Days. I haven't totally figured out if it has a presentation of the cartoon without interruptions at any point.

On the topic of VHS, I do have that Hercules one and some TV episode tapes of stuff like Marsupilami, Quack Pack, Timon and Pumbaa, the Little Mermaid, and Bonkers, and some other stuff. There are a lot I don't have though of those titles and others (like Aladdin, Doug, Mighty Ducks, and so on), plus stuff like Doug's movie. I don't know if I want to get ahold of anymore VHS tapes, though maybe I should for movies like that Doug one. I definitely would still want to get that Hercules one if I didn't have it. Loved that show. But, until I get one of those DVD recorder/VCRs to make disc transfers, I probably won't want to get anymore tapes. As many as I am replacing all the time, I still have a ton.

I have to admit, after my excited anticipation following me ordering Starmaker from my library, I was sort of let down by it. I'm glad I didn't buy the DVD outright, which had been my initial plan.

Well, I'm a completist anyway, for Disney animation at the very least, so I still would want it.

Yeah, our Wal-Mart had a crap-ton too.

Here's a picture:
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6527 ... neyxj8.jpg

I took that with my phone earlier.

Though sadly, it seems they got rid of their A-Z movie section, all they have now is kids, TV, and "new releases".

They also put these slipcovers on all the DVDs that didn't have pre-existing slipcovers.
How useless... I bought two Disney DVDs there and now I have two of them. I'm putting them up in the Trade forum, I don't want them!

Hmm, that setup is a lot like mine and the exact same titles, too!

Is Disney planning on all of those sequels/DACs going OOP?!

Why would they be stocking Wal-Marts with those specific titles all of a sudden?!

Does anyone know if these movies come with DMR codes? Even the older ones? (i.e. Strongest Man in the World, etc.)

Most of them do. I know the 2-packs have them.
