My Driver's License Test!
I'm taking my Driver's License test on Tuesday (this Tuesday, Feb. 10th). I've been practicing driving, doing K-Turns (aka 3 point turns), and backing into parking spaces, all of which are going to be on the test. I'm improving on my K-Turns (I have a feeling that after doing it a few more times I will have it down, it's not that hard) and backing in, but I'm still extremely nervous. Any tips on how to pass / do well on a driver's license test?

I know things have changed a lot since I took my test in 1996, but just go in relaxed and you will be ok.
Sounds like they have added a lot of stuff to the test. I was gone about 5 mins on my road test. We went down the road about a mile, and turned in at a fast food place to do a 3 point turn. Then drove back to the DMV, and that was it. The backing in to the parking space sounds like the hardest part in my opinion. I don't remember doing that at all during driver's education, or the test.
Seriously though don't be nervous, and just relax. If you know how to do these things, and go in relaxed you shouldn't have any problems.
Good luck on the test.

Do not solely rely on your rear-view mirrors. Look out the back window when doing your 3-point turns. And look for pedestrians, and make sure to stop for them! And practice using your emergency brake; make sure that you can pull it up and down.
This coming from someone who got her license during her 4th driving test...
I know what I'm talking about from experience!

I failed my second driving test due to not being able to lift up the emergency brake- I needed to use my mom's car due to my dad's van (what I learned to drive in) having its emergency brake in a different spot, I guess, and I just couldn't pull it up that time. I'm not sure if all state troopers, or whoever you have your road test with, make you use that brake, but just in case, make sure you can lift it up and down!DarthPrime wrote:They make you use the emergency brake now?
And great tip on the mirrors blackcauldron85.
And thank you! I failed my first driving test mostly due to me only relying on my mirrors to do a 3-point turn; I'm short, and my dad always just had me use the mirrors. Look out the back window! Don't forget!
Oh, and another hint- don't drive over the "invisible cars" (what my dad referred to themn as), which are the empty parking spaces, unless the person you're taking the test with tells you to.

The best advice is to just relax.
I think every state varies on the road test. When I took my test, I just drove around two city blocks. When my cousin took his test, he drove down the highway about a mile and came back (same state, different city). That was it, no k-turns, or parallel parking was required. We did have to show that we knew where everything was on a car (emergency break, wipers, lights....).

Make sure everyone in the car has their seatbelt on *before* you turn the ignition.DisneyFreak5282 wrote:Any tips on how to pass / do well on a driver's license test?

Don't be embarrased if you fail...it happens to a lot of people. You just can never know beforehand what they'll ask of you, so it's not always your fault...or you could've been taught to do something differently than your road test teacher wants you to do it.
I definitely agree with CJ on the relaxing part...I think that I wasn't relaxed, lol...it's can definitely be a stressful thing, but just breathe slow or something...
And, yes, what Scaps said- seatbelts! So important!

Forgetting things shouldn't be a problem. The instructor usually tells you what you're expected to do at the given time. And it should take no more than ten minutes, tops.
Just relax and you should be fine.

I hate you had to reschedule, but good luck on the 24th.DisneyFreak5282 wrote:So yesterday I had to cancel my test (for traumatic reasons discussed in the chat room last night), which is very upsetting because I was looking forward to hopefully getting it. But it has been rescheduled for March 24th, so hope for my sake that I get it!
I honestly didn't know you needed appointments to do this now. I just walked in with my papers and waited in line when I took mine (in 1996).

Thank you! I'm not sure if it may be different, because I'm taking it through the driving school where I took driver's ed. Some people from the DMV come down and go with you, and I think that's why it has to be scheduled, since the guys from the DMV are only there on scheduled days at scheduled times.DarthPrime wrote:I hate you had to reschedule, but good luck on the 24th.DisneyFreak5282 wrote:So yesterday I had to cancel my test (for traumatic reasons discussed in the chat room last night), which is very upsetting because I was looking forward to hopefully getting it. Ok, so I was mistaken, and I thought the date of my test was March 24th, but I just found out a few days ago that the test is on February 24th, aka tomorrow! Wish me luck, and I hope to see Amy, Dan, Dave, and Chris in the chat tomorrow night so I can give you either the good news that I passed, or request comforting words if I fail!

Thanks Amy and Dan!
I GOT MY LICENSE!!!!!! I was SO nervous. The instructors were an hour late, and they took FOREVER talking with the driving school owner as they drank their coffee. It's okay, though. I guess in a way it helped to calm my nerves because they were talking with the owner and it gave me clues as to what the guy who was doing the tests was like. I was really nervous. In the end all I had to do was back out of a parking space, back into one, and then he took me on one of the main roads, which again wasn't an issue, because I have driven on it many times. Surprisingly he didn't make me do a K-Turn (aka 3 point turn, broken u-turn, etc). People have said that one of the guys (the guy I wound up getting) doesn't make kids do the K-turns and when/if he does, it's only if they didn't do so well on backing in (which is weird because apparently you get 5 tries to back in and if you don't get it you fail).
Ironically enough, the main thing that I had problems with during the driving lessons, which was backing into a parking space, I did perfectly on on the test on my first try. The guy didn't even open the door to check!
I'm so happy! But it sucks that I have to wait a year until I can drive friends (says the law).
BTW - thank you to Chris, who changed the topic of the UD Chat to "Congratulations to Ryan on his license!!!"
