Playstation 3 Advise Needed

Post by JamesDFarrow »

Hi!

Looking into getting a Playstation 3. Looking at specs and reviews and it's quite confusing.

Can someone give me an explanation (in layman's terms) the differences in the 120gb and 160gb versions, etc...?

I don't need backward capability.

The controllers are wireless so I gather they work on battery. Do I really need the charger? Or can you also plug them into the console to charge?

How long can you play for before the battery runs out?

Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks in advance,

James :)

I only have an 80 gig, and it's great, though I wish it was backwards compatible. You can charge the controller on mine by plugging it into the console. It doesn't last that long (probably good for one sitting each time it's been charged), but I mainly use mine for watching DVDs and some of its computer-like capabilities (like the net), so I use the PS3 remote more often than the controller (you have to buy the remote separately). The controller is easier to move across the screen than the remote when it comes to the net though, but that's all. I really only use my controller to play the one game that I have, The Force Unleashed. I keep it plugged in all the time, so when I want to play the game it's all charged up.

The big difference between the 80GB ($399) and the 160GB ($499) is space, and Uncharted is included with the 160GB. The 80GB of extra space is not worth $100, since you can upgrade the PS3 hard drive very easily. However if you plan to pickup Uncharted the 160GB PS3 is a good deal. No current PS3s are backwards compatible. Some of the older 80GB (Motorstorm bundle, and MGS4 bundle), and all the 20GB, and 60GB PS3s could play PS2 games. All PS3s, even the current models, can play PS1 games. I would get one of the newer models personally even if you want backwards compatibility. They have had some internal hardware updates and the current PS3s are quieter and run cooler.

You can charge the controller though the PS3. My friend even said that he can plug it into a USB port on a computer and charge it too. If you want to make sure your controllers are always charged and ready to go it might be a good ideal to buy one of the charge stands.

Also if you can wait a few months there are rumors that the 80GB model might be $299 in April after a price drop.

Thanks!

I was planning on a newer model. I don't need backward capability.

The 80 sounds like the one. I just wish I could find a place that had them without the package deal. Will look around some more.

Thanks again,

James :)

No problem.

Most stores have them without having to buy a package. Gamestop has them on their website for $399, and I've seen a lot of them recently at Wal-Mart and Target. The Wii seems to be the only console that's hard to find anymore...

Got mine at Best Buy in October. I have three Best Buys in the area. One was BRAND new, but they didn't have the 80 gig, just 40 I think. Another Best Buy that isn't very old didn't have any, but they said they'd get some probably that night. Well, I ended up going to our oldest Best Buy, and they had a ton (of the 80 gig, sold by itself).

I haven't seen a 40GB in awhile. Was it still $399 or was it discounted?

I know our Best Buy had a few 20GB 360s for awhile after the 60GB ones came out. They sold them for about $40 cheaper to get rid of them. If they do that with the 40GB PS3s that could be a pretty nice deal.
