I don't really know what to think! It's definitely an interesting concept!

Lol, I saw this on PerezHilton.com, and thought it sounded really interesting. I'm not too into opera, so I'll probably just end up reading fan reviews. Now if it was a musical or even a play, I'd be in.

Operas of "Brokeback Mountain" and Walt Disney Dropped from NY City Opera Schedule
By Adam Hetrick
City Opera will no longer serve as the home for the aborning operas based on the film "Brokeback Mountain" and the life of late animator Walt Disney.
Appointed general manager and artistic director Gerard Mortier has departed his position at City Opera, ultimately taking with him the two works which he commissioned as part of his proposed programming, Variety reports.
The paper states that Mortier, who was to officially begin his duties in 2009, left City Opera due to budgetary constraints that would have hindered his intended programming that included Charles Wuorinen's opera based on the short story and subsequent Academy Award-winning film "Brokeback Mountain," as well as The Perfect American, the Philip Glass opera about the life of Walt Disney.
Mortier hopes that the productions, both of which were to premiere at City Opera in the 2012-2013 season, will find homes elsewhere.
Appointed in 2007, Mortier is currently director of the Opéra National de Paris. He has served as the director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie/Brussels Opera, the Salzburg Festival and the Ruhr Triennale.

As far as I know Walt had a pretty dramatic life. He liked to put everything he had on the line for something he believed in and he did this many times in his life. That said alone, I can't see why developing a opera based on his life and achievements would really be all that bad. He is afterall proof of the american dream.Wonderlicious wrote:I'm sorry, but the idea of an opera based on Walt Disney sounds about as stupid as ideas get. If someone has a picnic in the middle of the motorway and doesn't get killed and/or disrupt traffic, then perhaps there's a magical chance that this opera could work.
I'm personally sad for this news, I was actually really interested in seeing how this played out.

Disney had several Jewish employees , including Joe Grant ,and I think that this Anti Semitism thing has been over played possibly by Richard Shickel in The Disney Version.
Although there are racial stereotyped characters throughout several Disney animated shorts such as in the Three Little Pigs - the Big Bad Wolf in his "I'm the Fuller Brush Man I woiking my way through college!!" guise. these caricatures were not special to the Walt Disney Studios.
There were caricatures of Jews/Black characters/stereotypes in lots of films animated and otherwise from the other studios , several of whom were Jewish owned. Political correctness is trying to eradicate these stereotypes which are offensive to lots of people , however it is wrong to censor work produced before the more enlightened views of today came to be.

To Make Doubly Sure Bring Back Her Heart In This!!
If they did this opera with lots of visual imagery and effects it could help tell the story in a spectacular way. I do agree there is a lot about Walt's life that can be told here: early beginnings as a paper boy, growing up in Marceline, being an ambulance driver in WWI, trying to make it big in Chicago and LA. Alot can be told here prior to Mickey Mouse.singerguy04 wrote:As far as I know Walt had a pretty dramatic life. But yes it would need the visual effects.
Just watch "One Man's Dream" the next time you are at Disney's Hollywood Studios and you'll know what I'm talking about.

and you think about it now, and there are SO many cartoons that play racial stereotypes as routine gags. family guy, south park, the simpsons.. of course, these shows aren't meant for children. but it's never REALLY children who take these things too seriously. just adults who ACT like children. if it hurts you so much, turn off the damn tv! seeing racial stereotypes in a cartoon as a young child never affected my views of any race of people today, and as long as it's in a more positive light, like the way they USED to do it then i think that will be the same for most. as long as PC people do not try to irradicate art for "people's feelings" then i'm okay.Deco King wrote:Disney had several Jewish employees , including Joe Grant ,and I think that this Anti Semitism thing has been over played possibly by Richard Shickel in The Disney Version.

An Opera? Is this coming from Disney or some random company? Is Walt Disney's life story Disney Copyrighted? I sure don't know.
But an Opera? Well Hello! Why don't they just make a live-action bio-pic about Walt Disney, sure sounds better then singing songs about it.

Wow, I like this concept. I've always wanted to see some kind of adaptation of Walt's life, be it through cinema or theatre, and although this is only focusing on Walt's last days, this still excites me.
Am I right in thinking that Hazel George was Walt's nurse, who he shared many a sarcastic witticism with?
