Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and Bette Midler's 1996 buddy movie First Wives Club is set to become the latest film to hit the stage as a musical, thanks to Motown's biggest hitmakers.
Rock + Roll Hall of Fame inductees and Motown legends Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier are working on an original score for the stage spectacular - which is scheduled to debut in San Diego, California next summer - on its way to a Broadway run.
Holland-Dozier-Holland are responsible for some of the soul world's biggest hits - they penned tunes for The Supremes and the Four Tops, among others.
Both the 1996 movie and the new musical are adaptations of Olivia Goldsmith's novel.
Thoughts???
"Hip hop frightens you, doesn't it....Hmmm...Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate leads to endlessly posting threads about stupid white people. Hmmmmm....."
I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I don't see how they can make it a musical (then again, I didn't think Legally Blonde could be a musical either and it turned out rather well.)
Maybe Paramount will try to cash in on this and release a Special Edition DVD. One can only hope...

Agreed! Hopefully we also get Special Editions of Sister Act when that musical comes out.

I agree with pap64. I'd like to see some originality brought back to the stage. The First Wives Club is a great film and all, but that's what it should remain: a great film.
I'm not against it, though. If a movie fits well as a musical then fine. Beauty and the Beast worked because it was already a musical. So did Lion King.
Stuff like "The Producers" also worked well as Broadway musicals, and from the looks of things "Shrek the musical" will be a far better show than it was a movie. In fact, ANYTHING can be made into a great show with the right talent.
Its just that nowadays they seem to be grabbing everything and turning it into a musical of some kind.
Really, people. LEGALLY BLOND??? (Note: Sorry if there are fans of the show here, but it is the best example of how silly turning a movie into a musical can be sometimes).
