This is extremely hard. I've been working on a top ten list for the past year and only came up with 9. I can think of a lot of songs I like and listen to, but not a lot that I will be listening to the rest of my life and still enjoy. Anyway, here's the ones so far:

1. “Poor Unfortunate Souls” by Pat Carroll
2. “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls ~ I've considered having this played at my funeral.
3. “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson
4. “Too Much” by Spice Girls
5. “Lucky” by Britney Spears
6. “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton
7. “‘Til You Love Me” by Reba McEntire
8. “This Kiss” by Faith Hill
9. “1985” by Bowling For Soup
Image
Listening to most often lately:
Christina Aguilera ~ "Cruz"
Sombr ~ "homewrecker"
Megan Moroney ~ "Beautiful Things"

Well it's impossible for me to choose, so instead I'll make a list of the songs I get stuck in my head the most (recently, and outside of any Disney theme park area music loop). Maybe that could give everyone a clue as too what are my favorites?

"Put On Your Sunday Clothes" Movie or Original Broadway Cast Soundtracks to "Hello, Dolly!"
"Footloose" Kenny Loggins
"I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)" Kenny Loggins
"I'm Alright" Kenny Loggins
"Mr. Night" Kenny Loggins...wow..4 songs by him...
"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" The Andrews Sisters
"Beet Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar" The Andrews Sisters
"Kiss the Girl"
"Under the Sea"
"Part of Your World"
"Let's Hear it For the Boy"
"The Wells Fargo Wagon"
"Flash, Bang, Wallop!"
"If the Rain's Got to Fall"
"Half a Sixpence"
"Out There"
"Hellfire"
ALL the songs from The Happiest Millionaire

....

So. um, the soundtracks to Footloose, The Little Mermaid, Hello, Dolly!, Caddyshack, Hunchback, The Happiest Millionaire, Half a Sixpence and some Andrews Sisters songs thrown in for good measure. Anyone wanna try and make sense of this?

I find it impossible to name favourites.

These aren't technically my favourites, but here's the top 20 most played songs on my MP3
Player* I don't really select them most of the time, it's just down to my laziness of not updating some of my playlists on the device really (I'm content to only have a few playlists and add tracks to them slowly and play on random play so by mathematical probability, the older tracks get played more))

[Track - Artist - Album format]

Six Feet Under - Marion Raven – Here I Am
Teenage Life – Daz Sampson – Eurovision Song Contest 2006
Duel Duet – Cliff De Young & Cliff De Young - Shock Treatment OST
Hero - Charlotte Perrelli – Ripped from my Eurovision Song Contest 2008 DVD
Here I Am – Marion Raven – Here I Am
Wild Dances – Ruslana – 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest
My Number One – Elena Paparizou – 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest
Keep On Movin' – 5ive – Invincible
Due South [Theme '97] – Jay Samko – Due South Vol. 2 OST
Break You – Marion Raven – Here I Am
Alive – Meatloaf – Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose
End of Me – Marion Raven – Here I Am
Night in my Veins – The Pretenders – Pirate Radio
Far Away – King of Trolls – Er… I had to download this from some webpage
I'm With Stupid – Pet Shop Boys – Fundamental
In Time – Robbi Robb – Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure OST
The Eve of the War – Jeff Wayne – Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of War of the Worlds
Theme of Laura – Akira Yamaoka – Silent Hill 2 OST
Hymn to Her – The Pretenders – Pirate Radio
Walk Away – Bricklin – Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure OST

A few notes.

Yes, the Here I Am album is that good. The number of Marion Raven tracks isn't really an abnormality (but I would have expected at least one M2M track in the list too).

I've not idea how those two Bill and Ted tracks are still hanging in, I've not intentionally listened to that album for years! Still, In Time's pretty cool.

There's two tracks on Fundamental I prefer over I'm With Stupid (Integral and The Sodam and Gomorrah Show). Not sure why my player reports me playing I'm With Stupid more.

Likewise War of the Worlds, I much prefer Thunder Child, but I always play War of the Worlds in order, so the 1st track gets the most plays.

I'm surprised there's no Talking Heads, David Byrne, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Roxette in the chart to be honest.

* Once you get a song in the top 20, it's a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy because you think "I'll put on my favourites, Aaagh! Not that one! But its too late, its had another play counted on its play count.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

With 5929 songs on my iPod at present, and counting, it's virtually impossible to name a Top 20 favourite songs. Especially of all time. What I've tried to do below, in no apparent order, songs that are either rocking my world at the moment or are simply in my all-time "favourites". This can literally change from day to day, week to week. I've tried to cut across genres and moods, and not duplicate a single artist, but it is still quite difficult to get down to a top 20.

I've had a look at my Happy Bastard Playlist on my iPod, and started with most played for example, but I've not restricted myself to that. I reserve the right to change this list at any time!!! This is impossible...

Song - Artist

Death to Los Campesinos! - Los Campesinos
Outtasite (Outta Mind) - Wilco
I've Just Seen a Face - The Beatles
Arse Kickin' Lady from the Northwest - Tim Rogers
Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely - Hüsker Dü
Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams
Graveyard Shift - Uncle Tupelo
Search & Destroy - The Stooges
Debaser - The Pixies
Set Out Running - Neko Case
Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels) - The Arcade Fire
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Berlin Chair - You Am I
Blue - The Jayhawks
How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths
Crazy In Love - Beyonce and Jay-Z*
Sure Shot - Beastie Boys
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Purple Rain - Prince
PDA - Interpol

*I know, I know. It's a guilt pleasure, ok? :)

Oh, I had to leave out Beck, Bloc Party, multiple Wilco, You Am I, Tim Rogers, John Lennon, QOTSA, countless Beatles, The National, NIN, Whiskeytown, The Replacements, Ryan Adams, Nick Cave, BRMC etc

Still a half-decent playlist. I'd buy that compilation! :D

OMG, I haven't heard that song in awhile, totally forgot about it!

"I just can't cope, without my soap!"

"Cause good girls don't, and Annie won't, and you all know what I mean!"

"There's one thing I must confess, Sally was a man who wore a dress"

"Paging Dr. Noah Drake to ICU to treat a case of heartbreak"

rotfl

Classic lyrics. Gotta love one-hit wonders like the Afternoon Delights!

I thought you might know that one Albert even though it was "before your time"! :) And thanks for providing the reference which I will note in my OP...I didn't have my Rhino '80s box set handy! Nobody would write a song about soaps today! Who would care?

I remember hearing another song (a country one) that referenced a lot of soaps. The only words I remember though, is the refrain:

She had me sittin' on the edge of night, without a guiding light, tryin' to search for tomorrow. Got, caught in the secret storm, sure as the world turns, my life is just another soap...

No problem! Nice to know my General Hospital Trivia Book was good for something after all these years!

Actually, there was a song all about "The Bold and the Beautiful" back in 2002, by an Australian band called The Drugs. I used to have the mp3 but lost it (along with the soap song above) last year. IIRC, there were lines like "each afternoon, there's nothing as suitable as tea and mickies with the bold and the beautiful"

Still, it'd be cool if a mainstream artist would write a soap-centric song.
