They already said that The Lion King will be released on Blu-Ray?.
If there's a new edition I don't think I"ll buy it because I already have the Platinum Edition from 2003.

101 Dalmatians in HD?

They just released the dvd! It shouldn't be released for YEARS. Oh well, I'm very happy with the DVD version... 101 looks fine in standard definition. I honestly think only a handful of movies will look impeccably better in HD.

Difference in quality?

Post by MattDean »

Oops!

Correction: peeks!

Yeah, I wonder just how MUCH better the classics can get. Suppose the jury's out until Sleeping Beauty is released and we get to see it in Blu and compare it to its DVD counterpart.

A lot of talk is about the restoration of films - but the restored version will be on DVD too. There clearly will be an improvement but I really hope the difference is amazing enough to persuade the non-believers and to satisfy the likes of Blu fans like myself! :P

Ew, The Lion King's special edition.

Give me the OTV on Blu-Ray or I'm not buying it!

And LOL, some movies CAN'T be made into HD... 101 Dalmatians would look horrible because it wasn't drawn in great quality, so they'd either "restore" it to Hell (grr Lowry, we don't need your help here) or it would look like an upscaled DVD.

If it ain't OTV, it ain't worth anything!

Imagery looks good sofar, wonder how it will hold up on HD-screens, seeing that some movies like fantasia leave much work to be done for it to be top quality...

wait and see I guess..

Anyway at least their planning, although considering previous release schedules I doubt this will go unchanged

what are you talking about, any movie shown theatricly should be able to be shown in HD. movies are always downscaled for dvd/homevideo. they dont need to do anything when making HD copies, they have the original master, which is likely higher res than anything we have as consumers.

anyway, these lion king pics arent really going to do it justice, its not in its full res, and is off camera. not to mention the color is oversaturated.

a better example would be shots from the enchanted trailer, like these.

Yeah I saw The Lion King in its IMAX release and the obvious presence of the brown lining of the animation really bothered me. It is a bit too bright in color in the PE than it shouldve been.

If they fix everything they screwed up and provide the real theatrical version for the new DVD, I might actually buy a high def DVD player.

I realize that you can get 1080p from most films... but 101 Dalmatians wasn't animated in very high quality (which is why the Platinum Edition hardly looks any better than the Limited Issue or even a VHS), you wouldn't NEED 1080p. It would look the same as a DVD.

It was cheaply animated for a Disney feature, and releasing it on Blu-Ray would hardly look any better than a DVD.

The PE of The Lion King IS the IMAX version. It's not the theatrical version, which is what we all want.

Huh? The quality of the animation itself and the level of picture quality you'd get from an increased resolution are two completely different things. You're mixing apples with oranges here.

Couldn't have said it better myself. If 101 Dalmatians would look terrible on Blu-Ray, then it would have looked terrible in theatres back in 1961. What's more terrible than having all the possible definition - on a 35mm print, of course? :P

The picture quality is amazing!
I can't imagine what it looks like on an HDTV rather a computer screen!
