Il était une fois... Walt Disney (documentary)

Post by marlan »

I couldn't find any discussion of this French TV documentary Il était une fois... Walt Disney from 2006, directed by Samuel Doux.

It was broadcast in Finland today and I recorded it from the digital network.

It is a very sympathetic film discussing especially the visual influences of Walt Disney. Unfortunately all the movie clips from old classics with the aspect ratio 4 : 3 are stretched to 16 : 9 here.

If somebody would like to have a DVD±R copy of the film (PAL format), please let me know. It is 16 : 9 anamorphic with stereo sound, narrated in English, interviews in French, no subtitles. 48 minutes.

Yes, I remeber that one.
It was shown here in Sweden last year if I remember it correctly. I didn´t like it very much - had read about it before and thought it should be better and more interesting.
But sure it should interest some, here at the forum.

Oh, I'd surely be interested. Does it have English subtitles?

I speak French.

At sometime where it is not 2 in the morning, and I have had more than 5 hours of sleep, I will translate the video. :D

Interesting tidbit, though, 'Il etais une fois' is French for 'There was a time' or 'Once upon a time', less literally, and it is also the French title for Enchanted.
Man has a dream
And that's the start
He follows his dream
With mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true
For you and me!

I think the documentary was made to accompany the exhibition of the same name, which began in France and, last I heard, moved to somewhere in America.

There was also a book to accompany the exhibition (the same name, 'Once Upon a Time: Walt Disney), though it mostly consists of images; Robin Allan's 'Walt Disney and Europe' is more informative on the visual and artistic sources of the Disney films.

I just scored a DVD copy of this from a third party seller on Amazon Japan for $20 shipped to the USA. Seller said it was a used copy turns out it was brand new and never opened. It has a French and an English dub. Subtitles available are English and Japanese. Sadly it doesn't include the silent Snow White Movie that was included with the French DVD. Also the Japanese disc is region locked while the French disc was region free.
