Live-Action: What do you own & what eras do you like?

Post by littlefuzzy »

Right now, I own:

40s:
NOTHING! :(
Well, unless you count The Reluctant Dragon, and Victory through Air Power in the WD Treasures sets (both unwatched as yet)

50s-60s:
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Special Edition (1954)
Absent-Minded Professor, The (1961)
Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959)
Mary Poppins - 40th Anniversary Edition (1964)
Old Yeller - Vault Disney Collection (1957)
Parent Trap, The - Vault Disney Collection (1961)
Pollyanna - Vault Disney Collection (1960)
Shaggy Dog, The - Wild and Woolly Edition (1959)
Swiss Family Robinson - Vault Disney Collection (1960)
Three Lives of Thomasina, The (1963)

70s-80s:
Apple Dumpling Gang, The - Special Edition (1975)
Candleshoe (1977)
Cat from Outer Space, The (1978) (Anchor Bay and Disney)
Freaky Friday (1976)
Hot Lead & Cold Feet (1978)
Island at the Top of the World, The - 30th Anniversary Edition (1974)*
North Avenue Irregulars, The (1979)*
Parent Trap, The - 2-Movie Collection
- Parent Trap 2, The (1986)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Tron - 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition (1982)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Vista Series - DTS (1988)

90s-00s:
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The - Four-Disc Extended Edition Bookends Gift Set - DTS (2005) (also the 2-disc version)
Enchanted (2007)*
Freaky Friday (2003)
Haunted Mansion, The (2003)
Mr. Magoo (1997)
My Favorite Martian (1999)
National Treasure - 2-Disc Collector's Edition (2004)
Pacifier, The (2005)*
Parent Trap, The - Special Double Trouble Edition (1998)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - 2-Disc Limited Edition (2007)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 2-Disc Special Edition (2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - Special Edition 3-Disc Gift Set (2003)
Rocketeer, The (1991)
Rookie, The (2002)
Santa Clause, The - Special Edition (1994)
Shaggy Dog, The (2006)
Sky High (2005)

I may be able to pick most of the following up in the next week or two:
The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993)*
The Black Hole (1979)
Cool Runnings (1993)
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Iron Will (1994)*
Johnny Tremain (1957)*
Mighty Joe Young (1998)*
Summer Magic (1963)*
Tower of Terror (1997)*
* = unwatched

I'd also like to find the two Witch Mountain DVDs, and then I plan to get the live-action 101 Dalmations and sequel when they are re-released.

While I enjoy films from all eras, I think the 50s and 60s were the best. Almost all of the ones I have listed are absolute favorites.

The 70s films really started getting silly, although there were great ones in that era too, like Candleshoe. Actually, 70s movies in general are under-represented in my collection, as I was a child at that time. I really grew up in the 80s, and that is my decade of choice for non-Disney films.

The 90s-2000s films are more common just because they are fresh in peoples' minds, and probably 99.9% of theatrical films from 2000 on are going to get a DVD release, while the older catalog titles have to "prove" that they are worthy of a release to studio heads. That being said, however, I am certainly enjoying the grander films like Narnia, Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure, etc.

My fav era has to be early 90s mainly because of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (a fantastic remake that deserves wider recognition) and Hocus Pocus which is just hilarious!

I own all Disney movies (as well as all Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures) up to the end of 2006, and put every new one appearing to my collection when they get available.
Have been a Disney collector for more than 20 years now

40s:
The Reluctant Dragon (I consider this live-action)

50s:
Nothing

60s:
Pollyanna
The Parent Trap
Mary Poppins

70s:
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Pete's Dragon

80s:
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Return to Oz
Polly

90s:
Polly Comin' Home
The Muppet Christmas Carol
The Santa Clause
The Parent Trap

00s:
The Princess Diaries
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Tuck Everlasting
Freaky Friday
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
National Treasure
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Enchanted

I'm not sure what my favorite era would be. From this list, you'd think it'd be the one we're at now, but I have so many films from the past few years because modern live-action is treated with much more respect than classic catalog titles (which is why I haven't bought some titles like Babes in Toyland, yet). I think I have a soft spot for the 90s since I grew up with that era, and again, I don't own much from it because of the crappy DVD releases. Hopefully the BDs (if they ever come) will be improvements.

My movies (I have perhaps forgotten a few, and I am not counting all the movies I have that has been distributed by Buena Vista, just the ones I think of as "Disney-movies"):

- Mary Poppins (1964), cool and classic, I love it!
- Tron (1982), cool and cult-classic.
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), cool and classic.
- The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), cool, I love the Muppets!
- Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993), cool and classic.
- The Santa Clause (1994) - OK, but nothing special.
- Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996), OK, but not as cool as the first one.
- The Princess Diaries (2001), cool.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) DVD and Blu-ray, cool and classic, I love it!
- The Haunted Mansion (2003) - a bad, bad movie.
- National Treasure (2004) DVD and Blu-ray - cool.
- The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), OK, but nothing special.
- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), extended and normal DVD-edition and the Blu-ray - cool and classic.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), DVD and Blu-ray - cool and classic, I love it!
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - DVD and Blu-ray, cool and classic, I love it!
- Enchanted (2007) DVD and Blu-ray, magical, cool and classic, I adore it! My number one movie I think...
- National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) DVD and Blu-ray, cool.

Enchanted, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Chronicles of Narnia are the Disney live-action films that I love the most. I am also looking forward to Prince of Persia, John Carter of Mars and any new Enchanted, Pirates or Narnia-movie. I think the best Disney live-action movies are the ones they have made so far in the 2000s...

Well, I picked these up today:
The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993)*
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Iron Will (1994)*
Johnny Tremain (1957)*
Mighty Joe Young (1998)*
Summer Magic (1963)*
Tower of Terror (1997)*
* = unwatched

I still need to track these two down:
The Black Hole (1979)
Cool Runnings (1993)

So, two more 50s-60s, 2 70s-80s, and 6 90s-2000s (including the two I haven't found yet.)

It's kind of sad that the 90s-2000s films are so readily available, while the older ones get lost in the shuffle. I don't know how many times I have heard someone say "BLECH! A movie in black & white! That's too old for me!" And now, I have even heard the same comment applied to movies less than 15-20 years old...

EDIT: In my first list, I forgot to mention That Darn Cat! (1965), as I only have it on VHS. That is my sole Disney VHS, and I refuse to upgrade to the full-screen DVD. I also have Honey I Blew Up the Kid (1992) on laserdisc, in WIDESCREEN.

Excluding TV and direct-to-video movies for now...

The 1940s:
Victory Through Air Power (1943)
Song of the South (1946)

The 1950s:
Treasure Island (1950)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
Johnny Tremain (1957)
Old Yeller (1957)
The Shaggy Dog (1959)

The 1960s:
Pollyanna (1960)
Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks With a Circus (1960)
The Parent Trap (1961)
Savage Sam (1963)
Mary Poppins (1964)
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969)

The 1970s:
The Boatniks (1970) - why why why why why????
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)
The World's Greatest Athlete (1973)
Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)
The Shaggy D.A. (1976)
Freaky Friday (1977)
Pete's Dragon (1977)
The North Avenue Irregulars (1978 )
Return from Witch Mountain (1978 )
The Black Hole (1979)

The 1980s:
The Watcher in the Woods (1981)
Tron (1982)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Flight of the Navigator (1985)
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

The 1990s:
The Rocketeer (1991)
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Newsies (1992)
D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)
The Santa Clause (1994)
D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996)
Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
Air Bud (1997)
Flubber (1997)
The Parent Trap (1998 )

The 2000s:
Remember the Titans (2000)
102 Dalmatians (2000)
The Princess Diaries (2001)
The Santa Clause 2 (2002)
Tuck Everlasting (2002)
Freaky Friday (2003)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
National Treasure (2004)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2005)
The Pacifier (2005)
Sky High (2005)
Invincible (2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Enchanted (2007)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

It's hard for me to pick a favorite era because there's more misses than hits when it came to Disney's live-action films (at least for me). I lobsterlove The Rocketeer, Newsies, and a few others that I don't have on DVD yet, but the 90s as a whole wasn't Disney's best for live-action. I think if I had to pick an era, it'd probably be the 1960s, even though I have less there than I do in the 90s/2000s. But I'd rather watch Swiss Family Robinson, Mary Poppins, The Happiest Millionaire, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes over much of the 2000-2008 films.

- Ion Will (1994)

90s:

- Hocus Pocus (1993)

- Dick Tracy (1990)
- Mighty Joe Young (1998)

2000s:

- Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2, and 3 (2003, 2006, 2007)

- Enchanted (2007)
- The Chronicles of Narnia 4-disc (2005)

- The Santa Clause 2 (2002)
- Sky High (2005)
- Read It and Weep (2006)
Tower of Terror (2003)

Other live-action stuff:
I have all the Treasures sets and the 4 Legacy collections, plus I have Lizzie McGuire Volume 1 and the first two (of 4) DVDs released of Lizzie before the Volume set came out: Fashionably Lizzie and Growing Up Lizzie. Guess I'll have to get the other two, as there's no sign yet of Disney releasing furthe volumes. Also try to get any of those free promotional DVDs whenever I can, like the theme park planning ones, Disney Weddings, etc...

A lot of my favorites I still do not own, some even on VHS... I'm working on it. I tend to buy based more on price/sales than anything, and I am a Disney completist (at least with the pre-'90's stuff), but sometimes I buy on impulse. A lot not mentioned here I do own on VHS though, including some top faves.

My favorite eras for live-action... pretty hard for me to choose. Probably the 50's and 60's and the later '80's thru early '90's. I have favorites from every era, and I love some of the most panned '70's stuff (like Million Dollar Duck, ha), but I think those eras were Disney at its best. In the 2000's though, they have had some occasional masterpieces in my opinion, despite how modern Disney live-action is constantly dissed. I suppose it's just irritating how much more attention they pay to the modern Disney Channel stuff that doesn't really feel very "Disney" at all.

Off the top of my head, some that I really love and want to buy badly are:
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Honey, I Blew Up the Kid
Toby Tyler
the Dexter Riley trilogy
Swiss Family Robinson
Pollyanna
Shaggy D.A.
One Magic Christmas
Disney's Muppet releases
Newsies
Rocketeer
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
That Darn Cat
The Santa Clause
Absent Minded Professor
The Gnome Mobile
Eloise At Christmastime
National Treasure 1 and 2
Heavyweights
The Halloweentown Movies
Tom and Huck
Million Dollar Duck
Monkeys, Go Home
Spaced Invaders
Babes in Toyland
and
The Ugly Dachshund

Though I want many others as well...
