Need Help Identifying Obscure Disney "Ghost Girl"

Post by Ernest Rister »

When I was still a teenager, in the early 80's, I saw a Disney film on HBO in which a young boy encountered the ghost of a young girl who was looking for a doll. If memory serves, the film was set in Louisiana. One of the high points of the film involved the ghost making herself "real" again, so that she could dance with the boy at a southern ball. The doll was in a well, and there was great intrigue and mystery as to how it got there, along with great danger for the boy as he followed the ghost's clues. It was very dark and scary, but there was also a strong hint of sadness and melancholy. Being a youngster, I was pulled away from the movie for some other pressing matter, and to this day, I've never been able to forget it -- and I never saw the beginning of the movie, nor it's ending.

Anyone else know of the movie of which I speak? I'm certain now that it was a "two-part" episode of the Wonderful World of Disney, and yet the production values (animated shimmering blue line around the ghost) seemed to suggest that the film was at one point intended to be a theatrical effort.

Help?

I don't have cable so I never saw it but from what you describe it sounds like Casper, which wasn't made by Disney

Was Casper a girl? Or a CGI cartoon?

No, I'm talking about something made in the 1970's that played on cable in the early 80's.

I'm fully aware of what Casper was, and who made it.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot
This film, which was made for Disney by the director Erman John, is one of the simplest and the very best as far as I have seen in quite a while.
And that is rather simply put to say the least.
Now sometimes when a director makes a ghost story film for the entire family, there are some factors that can ruin it to say the least.
Well the film locale could not lend itself to the film , the directors feel for the film would not be very suttily stressed, the soundtrack could not parlay a very simple and to the point feel for it, and the talents of the actors would be enhanced be the film as well.
Thankfully, however, this is not the case.
the directors talents are very well enhanced, the feel he has has been done in a very suttle manner without scaring kids, the soundtrack has a very good feel for the movie, the locale lends itself to the film, and the actors talents are enhancingly used in the film as well.
Its story is this.

Alexander ( Biff McGuire) and his family have moved into an old southern mansion, and he thinks that everything is allright at first.
However, after he starts to get some rather strange feelings around some parts of the old house, and starts to look into its history a little more, he thinks that the events in the house are tied to a rather sad tale that he hears from someone in his family, such as his mother.

But does she help him out?
No.
He becomes friends with a young girl, who is about his age, and they start to look into the history of it more, and find out some things.

First, there is a ghost, a ghost girl about their age, and she is the witness to some rather terrible fate that befell her and her family.
She is also under a curse as well.
Alexander and his new friend (Barbara Barrie )start to get into her mystery more and more,
And also find out something too, something that someone else, a rather crazy man (Anthony Zerbe) is trying to get too.
Something rather precious, gem type, and lost.

Will they help their new friend by breaking her curse?
Can they help solve her mystery?
Will the hidden diamonds that were supposedly lost be found?
Will they not be hurt in their dealings with the caretaker?

Or does he have something in plans for them, something hideous?
And can help come to them both in time if he finds them?

If you want to see this on video, please do, and if you r kids want to see it too, let them.
There is no gore here, no killing , but there is a bit of violence.
Just dont let your little kids see it, its is better for kids who are 12 and up.

sincerely,
treknut

Hey! I Did Not SAy I Support What The Guys Are Doing. I Just Said That Was A Place Where You Can Buy Them. And The Reason Why I Bought Mine From Them Was Because I was desperate to get a copy of this movie and a couple others and I bought them just to have them not for value. Just for my private home use.l

No prob. It's better to wait for the Official Version in my opinion then get illegal copies now. Who cares if it takes 4 more years, it'll be worth it just to see that Disney actually released them. Boy will that be a sweet day.

But I have a feeling they will come out this year or next going on what someone at Disney told me. :)
