http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Popeye-Volume-3/9823"He's strong to the finish, 'cause he eats his spinach!" He's Popeye, the Sailor Man - It's the original Fleischer and Famous Studios theatrical shorts that fans have been demanding for generations. These are the ones that made Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto pop icons!
Just this past weekend we had the heads-up on info for the upcoming Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3: 1941-1943 DVD set, which animation expert Jerry Beck mentioned (on a recent interview) would be coming later this year. This morning Warner Home Video made it official, confirming the title above, aimed at collectors, and giving a specific release date of September 30th.
Note that this is the same date Warner will release the more "family-friendly" disc Popeye & Friends - Volume 2, consisting of four episodes from 1987's Hanna-Barbera produced Popeye and Son color cartoon series.
The Popeye the Sailor - Volume 3: 1941-1943 2-disc set will contain 32 shorts, shown on TV over the years but originally produced for the cinema. These are completely remastered, and unedited, and will consist of many of the wartime shorts (an exact list of the included titles is not yet available). No word yet on extras, if any. Cost is $34.98 SRP. Here's a sweet look at the packaging:
