Changes Coming to Nick@Nite (And "Family Matters")

Post by AwallaceUNC »

This article is a few weeks old, but I've just stumbled upon it now. Nick @ Nite is retooling its network somewhat extensively. This follows a long, disappointing trend of ignoring classic television. As much as I like "Everybody Hates Chris", I don't want to see it on Nick @ Nite. That's a half-hour that could go to something like "Bewitched".

However, I am happy that "Family Matters" is coming; it's one of my favorite shows.

Here's the article from Variety:
Nick at Nite integrating 'Family' TV
Network shuffles adult-centric programming
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

Nickelodeon is repositioning its evening-based Nick at Nite block as a destination for young families.
Once the domain for adults after Nickelodeon's kid audience went to bed, Nick at Nite is adding more original series and events to attract multiple generations.

Nick at Nite's traditional diet of off-net sitcoms remains, but the net this week will announce the primetime gamer "My Family's Got GUTS," as well as the canine competish "The First Annual Worldwide Fido Awards." Both come from former Nick topper Albie Hecht.

According to Nick/MTVN Kids and Family Group prexy Cyma Zarghami, new franchises are part of Nick at Nite's revived mission to target both young adults -- some of whom grew up watching Nickelodeon -- and their kids.

"We study our audience all year long, and among the trends we've seen in the family dynamic is kids and their parents are spending a lot more time together," Zarghami said. "TV time is becoming much more valuable. Where we are now, the first generation of Nick viewers are now the first generation of Nick families. We think there's a real opportunity here to connect with a family audience, something that's not a part of Nick's historical DNA. There's a whole new opportunity for us creatively."

Already, Nick at Nite has redesigned its logo, which now for the first time is similar in look and color to Nickelodeon's. Also, the mix of off-net fare has become more family-centric -- including "Home Improvement" and "Full House," as well as "George Lopez," which became the first off-net show to immediately bow on Nick at Nite in syndication.

That mix has helped Nick at Nite score double-digit increases in the first quarter of 2008 -- up 32% with viewers, and 37% with adults 18-49.

Next up, Nick at Nite has picked up the initial off-net run of "Everybody Hates Chris," which joins the sked next January. And the channel is about to announce it has secured syndicated episodes of 1990s hit "Family Matters."

"The playing field is wide open in the family space," Zarghami said. "We've seen an unbelievable increase in ratings thanks to the performance of shows like 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air,' 'Home Improvement' and 'Roseanne.' It's time to start experimenting with original programming. ... By fall, Nick at Nite will have taken on a whole new sheen."

First up, "Fido Awards" will air Sunday, July 27, and Monday, July 28, at 9 p.m. Competish will feature finalists in six categories: cutest dog, best dressed, best voice, most outrageous, best trick and dog/owner lookalike.

By night two, the Fido winner will be crowned in a live telecast.

"The pitch was, think 'American Idol,' but for dogs," Zarghami said. "The whole family loves Fido. What's not to like about an awards show that celebrates cute dogs?"

Hecht's Worldwide Biggies shingle is behind the "Fido Awards," as well as "Family GUTS," which is an updated version of the mid-1990s daytime Nickelodeon gamer "GUTS."

"There's a community of people out there who grew up with Nickelodeon and want to reconnect with it in a different way, with their kids," Hecht said. "It's great for both audiences and producers like us. Our goal is to reinvent the family game, to be able to come up with things that will bring families together."

"My Family's Got GUTS" follows families as they compete in various extreme-sports games. Production begins this summer at Universal Studios Orlando on 20 half-hour episodes, plus two hourlong specials. Mike O'Malley ("Yes, Dear") hosted the original version; the net and Hecht are still scouting for a host for the revival.

" 'GUTS' has equity with the audience, and it's a great idea in today's extreme sports environment," Zarghami said. "Rather than invent something new, we're tapping into a game we loved and had a lot of excitement built into it."

Nickelodeon also recently announced the family-centric original telepic "Gym Teacher: The Movie," which will air during Nick at Nite.

"I think that we need to do enough originals so that we have reasons for people to tune in periodically in bigger waves," Zarghami said. "But we'll always have acquisitions as part of the formal schedule."

With both Nick @ Nite and TV Land switching focus to original programming and shows from the '80s and '90s, there is once again little room for classic shows on television. I think the solution is to add a TV Land 2 network, which can host the kind of shows that Nick @ Nite and TV Land aired during their first few years. Since those shows are hard to find on TV today, despite remaining popular, I think there would be enough of an audience to support an additional network.

you know what? If I wanted to watch GUTS...I would rather them revive Nivk Games and Sports. Best channel ever. Also they pretty much ruined Nicktoons Network.

I can live with Nick@Night switching things up. I rather like the idea that I can watch 80s and 90s shows there. It's just too bad TV Land's programming has gone down the toilet. As much as I love "Just Shoot Me!", it doesn't belong on there. I miss "Bewitched", "I Dream of Jeannie", "Mr. Ed", "Green Acres" (granted they have it, just in a bad time slot), "The Carol Burnett Show", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "Laverne and Shirley" (and I'm sure I could think of more) on TV Land and Nick@Night. Actually, I heard that by the end of next year, TV Land plans to drop "I Love Lucy". After that, I'm dropping TV Land from my viewing schedule.

This is why I like TV on DVD...

I can watch the shows I want and the episodes I want, when I want. 8)

Of, course, I don't get to see the shows that aren't out on DVD yet, like the Carol Burnett show.

Neither Nickelodeon nor Nick at Nite have been watchable for years. Nicktoons Network, while it shows a few classic shows, is almost as unwatchable. TV Land is heading in the same direction, showing stuff like Just Shoot Me and movies from the 80s and 90s. I guess that shows that nobody cares for classic sitcoms anymore.

I have the Boomerang network, which is supposed to show classic cartoons. While they do show classic cartoons most of the time, they have also aired more recent shows, which destroys the purpose of the network.

Great! The network is even more crap-tastic than it was before.

The only good thing Nick-at-Nite (I REFUSE to spell it the way they spell it now) had going for it was Roseanne, and even that they showed too much. Now it's officially at the bottom of the hill, making every single night a Fresh Prince marathon and showing the exact same episodes for up to three nights in a row. No show deserves that kind of treatment, but especially not an awful show like Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

It upsets me when I think about how great Nick-at-Nite used to be, especially at this time of the year. Do any of you remember their annual Block Party Summer marathons?! I used to LOVE watching those! I'll never forget sitting at home and watching back-to-back episodes of classic sitcoms all summer long. I especially looked forward to "Lucy Tuesdays" and "Bewitched Be-Wednesdays"! :P At least I still have the memories of those annual "Block Parties". I literally consider them part of my childhood.

And don't even get me started on daytime Nick. The entire network went to crap when they changed the cast of All That! and switched Rugrats (which was an obsession of mine as a kid) to All Grown Up. Just the thought of it pisses me off!

I can't believe this! The whole point of Nick-AT-Nite(I'm with you, Prince Ali) was that it was older shows. I'm only 18(soon to be 19), shows I remember seeing first-run should not be on Nick-At-Nite. I stopped watching it when they went into the 90s, but made an exception for NewsRadio and Designing Women, two shows that you couldn't find on any other channel(unlike Fresh Prince and Roseanne). Of course they took them off, at least Designing Women is on TV Land now.

One more thing, if they really wanted the "first Nick parents"or whatever to watch Nick-At-Nite, shouldn't they play some old Nickelodeon shows?
