I am holding the Lion King 1 1/2 right NOW!!!!!!

Well my last day at the disney store was Dec 26, but i have been on call for the past 2 weeks, well they finally called me in today, yay!!!! a few extra hours!!! Well I got to work a half hour early and as i was going through the back of the store I saw that we had a demo tape for the Lion King 1 1/2 so i poped it in and started to watch it, i didn't see the whole thing obviously, so i asked if I could borrow, and really I don't think it was suppose to be leant out, but they let me borrow it anyway, so cool! I will watch the rest tomarrow!

Well, first off, it was just the tape... so I don't know what the dvd or it's apecial features are like....

Also, the only preview, and this may be because it was only a demo tape, to be shown was the Mulan II preview, coming to DVD and video fall 2004, starlioness

The movie itself was pretty good, I will definately be buying it I think... I don't really think of this as a sequel, it is more of a humouress take of a different perspective of the Lion King...

I can't tell you how many times, laughed out loud!

However, if you take this movie really seriously, you will most likely be dissappointed, so I recommend watching with a lite heart.

Fans and non fans of the lion king, alike, shoulod enjoy this film, if you enjoy humorous movies.

I was under the impression, going in, that this movie was suppose to tie up some of the loose ends from the second one, explaining about the lioness followers of Scar and such, but it didn't, in fact the way it ends, it doesn't fit with the seaquel... but that is only one of the many inconsistencies, which is why i again say to not take the movie too seriously, but enjoy it for what it is...

A few burning questions.

1) I saw a video clip from the actulal movie online in which Timon meets Rafikki. At one point during this clip, they pause the "tape" and Timon and Pumbaa's shadows appear with the remote as in the teaser trailer on the DVD of the original Lion King, and then they talk briefly before unpausing the tape and allowing the scene to continue. I'm really hoping that this bit was added in for marketing because I don't like the idea of Timon and Pumbaa having a remote and stoping a "movie." Cute for ads, yes, but for a movie its's a bit too modern to work. Can you confirm or deny the presence of this bit or simmilar bits in the movie? If they do have a remote, is it explained how they get it and whatnot? Is it handeled well, more or less is what I'm asking. Thanks a lot.

2) Also relating to Rafikki and Timon - in the mini-storybook included in The Lion King DVD, Timon says he meets a wise old monkey Rafikki. In the scene I saw, mentioned above, Rafikki did NOT reveal his name to Timon, so "Who's the monkey?" still works in a sense. However, the clip I saw was clearly just a snippet and was not the complete scene. (This is the scene where Timon calls out "Which way should I go?" and Rafikki pops up and says "That depends on what you seek," I'm sure you know the scene.) Does Rafikki reveal his name to Timon in this scene or in any scene that takes place prior to when he says "WHO'S THE MONKEY!?" in Lion King?

3) In the storybook, there was a lot of timeline errors - For example, Day 5 of Timon's diary is when they attend Simba's presentation and they find Simba by Day 10, obviously that doesn't work. It's made clear that many years pass between Circle of Life and the day Mufassa takes Simba out on Pride Rock to show him "the whole kingdom." Please tell me that the timeline is correct in the movie and that the errors were just for the storybook. Please? Okay, really, can you address the timeline continuity and tell the truth and I hope it stays correct with TLK?

Yes, Timon and Pumba do stop the movie from time to time, and comment. The trailer from the Lion King dvd, is actually the beginning of the movie. So I guess you could say it is explained by them just watching the "movie"...

This was one of the inconsistancies I was refering to, because Timon does see Rafiki several times through out the movie, and so I doesn't make sense why he would say "Who's the monkey?" in the movie, although I don't remeber if Rafiki's name is said or not, I don't think it is though... still this doesn't change anything for me...

I am afraid the time line is a bit off, and I don't understand the logic of it at times, but I guess they did it in a way so that Timon and Pumba could be in all the important scenes from the first movie...

Uh... well, not exactly years go by, Jake. More like a few months. I'd say about 4-6 months, judging from "Young Simba"'s size. That silly storybook diary is still chronologically wrong, in any case. ~_^

However, years do go by when Simba's in exhile. To get a full mane like "Adult Simba" has, it would take about 2-4 years. And on a supposed diet of insects, probably even longer! Phil could tell us, but I'm sure Hakuna Matata fudges up Simba's adult age, too. It'll probably imply that only a few months go by before Simba's fully grown. *shrug*
Eh - oh, well. Walt himself did the same thing with Bambi. I mean, Bambi stayed a young, spotty fawn from spring to autumn - then shot up to a two-year-old buck over the winter.

Also - speaking of timelines, d'you know that TLK has a possible concrete time of occurence? If the little-known TLK book, The Brightest Star, is to be taken as canon, there's some evidence we can glean from it. (You can see scans of the whole book at Kiara's Image Vault.) Being a Christmas read-along book, it places Mohatu's (Ahadi's father and Mufasa's grandfather) death around the time that the Star of Bethlehem appears in the sky. The animals of the Pride Lands see a big, bright shining star in the sky one night soon after their beloved King dies (he saved the Pride Lands from a bad drought a few years earlier), and believe it to be the spirit of their late leader, and a good omen. Now, this being a Christmas read-along (part of a small collection of holiday stories that Disney did - 101 Dalmatians and Beauty and the Beast were part of this series, as well), we can make a sure guess that this is the Star of Bethlehem - as there are no other Christmas references in the whole book.
So, if the Star of Bethlehem showed up at Mohatu's death, Ahadi - and probably even Mufasa - were alive at that time. And given the somewhat short lifespans of lions, the whole TLK story took place while Jesus was alive - about 2000 years ago.

Again, this is only if The Brightest Star is to be taken as serious TLK canon. Disney was probably just making another fun, quick little series to make a fast buck, and didn't really think that much about it. But that period of time would fit - given the wide, pristine landscapes and noticeable lack of humans.

surprised they didn't do Christmas refs with Aladdin. didn't they do a christmas with TLM? I don't remember ..

back to TLK 1 1/2 .. how does the movie end ? they the original did with T&P commentary? or does it have any connections with TLK 2 at all? I know they don't tell about Zira and the outlanders .. but what about the cub? does it look like Fluffy or Kiara?

Well, in comic book continuity we have a term for such instances:

"Unreliable Storytellers"

There's often little continuity problems with comic books how have years and years of history to take into consideration. Often errors slip through that are corrected or ignored later. One of the most popular methods of doing this is to imply that the issue in question was being told through the eyes of a character who was an "unreliable storyteller" either because he didn't have full possession of the facts at the time or he was embelishing the story.

Now, to me Timone and Pumbaa don't seem like the most reliable of storytellers.

So the question that comes up... as it does in comics sometimes... is why tell the story in the first place if the facts don't fit (either by mistake or by design). Well the answer is simple. Because the story must always... always be more important than the continuity. Sure it's nice if you can have both, or tie things together later. But the story must always come first.

I'm not too keen on this project. I think it's the wrong idea from the start. But as Prince Phillip says, don't worry about the continuity, don't take it too seriously and have fun watching the movie and enjoy the current story with no worries about the past. After all, your just watching Timone and Pumbaa's own recollection of events, so any errors can be dismissed.
