If You Were A Disney Drag Queen...

Post by Escapay »

This was inspired by that recent discussion in the "which princess has the biggest gay fanbase" thread...

If you were a drag queen, and had to pick a Disney character...who would you...well, drag?

I have been Ursula. For a drama exam I dressed in full drag and performed a retooled version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" for a theater of over a thousand people (I was one of the top 5 grades who had to perform for the school).

I look damn good as Ursula, though I don't know how you women folk deal with that make up crap. My face felt about 10 pounds heavier.

Just for poops and giggles here's the part of the scene I heavily alerted. Sadly I can't find a copy with the stage directions on it, but this is the dialog. It's the part where Ursula explains the deal:

URSULA

Now here’s the deal!
I will brew a potion that can turn you into a human for, let’s say, THREE days!
You got that, THREE DAYS!

Now before the sun sets on the third day you’ve got to get dear old princy to fall madly in love with you?
That is, he’s got to kiss you!
But not just any kiss
No…
Ursula does have to make it a bit challenging doesn’t she?
Yes…
Oh don’t give me that look guppy!
It won’t be hard!
I mean look at you!
I’ve fallen a little in love with you in the ten minutes you’ve been here…

Now, if he does kiss you by the time the sun sets on the third day, then presto! Walla! You’re a human forever!

But…

ARIEL

But what?

URSULA

Well, on the off chance things don’t go so well and princy-poo doesn’t pucker up.
I’m afraid you’ll be transformed back into a mermaid.
And you’ll belong to me!

ARIEL

If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again.

URSULA

THAT’S RIGHT!
How could I have overlooked such a simple detail?
Look at it this way: you'll have your man, heh heh.
Life's full of tough choices, isn't it? Heh heh.

Oh, and there is one more thing.
We haven't discussed the subject of payment.
You can’t something for nothing you know…

ARIEL
But I don't have-

URSULA
I'm not asking much, just a token really, a trifle!
You’ll never even miss it!
What I want from you baby doll is…
No…
Uh-Uh...
I’ve got a nice set of those already...
Ah yes! What I want from you is - your voice!

I changed the arrangement of the song too. It had more of a heavy metal feel to it, and the way I sang a lot of the lines is very different from the movie, but I can't really show you guys that. I should have got someone to record it, but alas, I did not. The body language really made the scene.

That's one of the best parts of the movie! I love to watch the whole scene when she does her song and explains her deal.

I hope you are joking...

A drag queen is a man who dresses in flamboyant women's clothing and wears exaggerated amounts of make up.

An example of a drag queen is Ru Paul.

Ursula from The Little Mermaid was in fact inspired by a drag queen named Divine.

Someone who dresses up in clothes of the opposite sex, with exaggeration in behavior, make-up, and the clothes themselves, for special occasions (stage/screen performances, special events, etc.). This is not to be confused with cross-dressing, in which people choose to wear clothes of the opposite sex for everyday activities.

From Wikipedia...

A Drag queen is usually a man who dresses (or "drags") in female clothes and make-up for special occasions and usually because they are performing or entertaining as a hostess, stage artist or at an event. This is in contrast to those who cross-dress for reasons other than as a source of entertainment for others or transgender people who are not necessarily drag queens or cross-dressers but sometimes fit into those labels.

There are many kinds of drag artists and they vary greatly from professionals who have starred in movies to people who just try it once. Drag queens also vary by class and culture and can vary even within the same city. Although many assume all drag queens are gay men or transgender, there are drag artists of all genders and sexualities who do drag for various reasons. Generally, drag queens dress in a female gender role, often exaggerating certain characteristics for comic, dramatic or satirical effect. Other drag performers include drag kings, who are women who perform in male roles, faux queens, who are women who dress in an exaggerated style to emulate drag queens and faux kings, who are men who dress to impersonate drag kings.

The term "drag queen" usually refers to people who dress in drag for the purpose of performing, whether singing or lip-synching, dancing, participating in events such as gay pride parades, drag pageants, or at venues such as cabarets and discotheques. In the United Kingdom, alongside traditional drag work such as shows and performances, many drag queens engage in 'mix-and-mingle' or hosting work at night clubs or at private parties/events. Drag is a part of Western gay culture; it is often noted that the Stonewall riots on June 27, 1969 in New York City were inspired and led by drag queens, and, in part for this reason, drag queens remain a tradition at pride events. Prominent drag queens in the gay community of a city often serve as official or unofficial spokespersons, hosts or emcees, fund-raisers, chroniclers and community leaders.

In The Sound of Music: 40th Anniversary Edition, there's footage of a costume contest during a SOM sing-along screening, and while there's the expected costumes (women as nuns, kids as the Von Trapps, a man as the carburator...), they showed a couple male contestants dressed in female characters, which was met with a soundbyte by one of the event coordinators with something along the lines of "Yeah, we get all kinds of costumes from all kinds of people".

And in the Mommie Dearest: Hollywood Royalty Edition, there's a segment during one of the three featurettes in which Lypsinka shows how he gets into his drag queen get-up of Joan Crawford.

Why don't you lighten up a little, and if you don't like the discussion, don't read it or post in it?

For someone who seems so against such a risque topic, perhaps you'll be whistling a different tune when you realize there's also been drag queens in Disney.

For example, the live-action reference model for the old hag in Snow White was a man (I forget he name, he was a well-known character actor). And in the movie Swiss Family Robinson, the character Roberta dressed up as a boy to keep the pirates from knowing she's a girl. A scene in Aladdin has Genie as four cheerleaders. Also, Pleakley from Lilo & Stitch frequently dresses in women's clothing (though that's more cross-dressing than drag queen).

And don't get me started on the characters in theme parks. More often than not, these days Mickey Mouse has a female castmember inside, and the Queen of Hearts is almost always a male.

Drag Queen

I am not against such a "risque" topic nor do I consider it "risque"-I think it's fun and enjoyable. However, do you pee in your kitchen sink? It just doesn't belong here. Why is that difficult to understand?Hopefully you pee in the bathroom and eat in your kitchen. Every thing in its proper Place!Put discussions like this in their proper place.

The main forum page gives this as the description for Disney Discussion:

All topics relating to Disney movies, shows, and DVDs.

ALL topics. It doesn't say "Only topics safe to discuss with a five year old" or "Only topics that have to do with how many slipcovers fit in a gym locker". ALL Topics. A couple months ago there was a thread asking "Which Disney Princess Would You Rather Eat?" in the cannibalistic sense. I could start a thread saying "I think that Peter Pan belongs to the Political Party of Such-And-Such" and it'd be in the right forum. Likewise, I can start a thread saying "If you were a Disney Drag Queen, Which Character Would You Drag?" without it being an innapropriate topic for discussion.

Seriously, you make it sound like I was asking "Which Disney Characters Should Star In The 'Spank Inferno' Genre of Porn?", which, actually, would make for an amusing topic, but I won't start it simply because Drag Queens are apparently controversial enough.

Being a woman, here are some male characters I would dress as:

Chesire Cat
Beast
Broadway (Gargoyles)

Dressing in drag for a woman isn't as much fun as a man. I keep contemplating dressing up as Ursula one of these years for Halloween.

And some people need to keep their lacy panties from getting into a knot. Topics like this are fun. If you don't like topics like this, DON'T READ THEM! I hate Hilary Duff and all that other teenie bopper crap, so you won't see me in those threads. But I wouldn't go in there and tell people to stop talking about them. Its not MY place to tell someone what to post. So long as the post isn't a violation of the rules, its okay with me!

And I think we found our new PapiBear....

My mom recently purchased an adult Aurora costume..... I tried it on, but the arms wouldn't quite fit! I'd have to say it was the first dress I had ever attempted to try on and it was an interesting experience.... :P

Yup I was very happy with that mark.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the type of guy who dresses in drag frequently (I've done it 5 times, all in drama courses in high school) but when we were given the final exam assignment of two monologues I immediately decided I had to do "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Being someone as fabulous as Ursula, even for only a few minutes, was something I couldn't resist.

I also looked to Disney films for my second piece, though this time I stayed the gender I was born. I did "Hellfire" from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Don't forget, Mulan also dressed up and portrayed a male soldier in most of the movie. She's a Drag King!
