Walt Disney's Best Princess Fairytale

Post by SleepingBeautyAurora »

Walt Disney made 3 different Princess Fairytale films during his lifetime.

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
2. Cinderella (1950)
3. Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Which one do you think was the best ?
Which one do you think Walt Disney liked best?
Which one do you think Walt was most proud of ?

I voted for Sleeping Beauty, because it's always remained my favorite Disney film. There's so many reasons why I love this that I don't know if I can name them all. :p

I love the artwork and style of the film, the story having a more epic feeling than the other fairy tale films, the fact that the movie centers more on the character development of the fairies and Phillip than the princess (I like Aurora, but I'm glad that they focus more on the other characters instead and gave Phillip and the fairies a much larger role), the score and classical sound to the music, and the voice talent.

Of the ones I think that Walt liked the best, was probably Cinderella. He said it was a story that he really related to, and was very hands-on about the project. Although I think it's either Snow White or Sleeping Beauty that Walt was the most proud of. Being his first classic and so involved with it, he really loved the work of that picture, such as acting out the story himself to his staff and being so hands on about the story and designs of the characters. But in many books and interviews I've read, Walt actually soon began to the hate the picture late in his career whenever a new movie was released because it was always compared to Snow White, like Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty.

Sleeping Beauty I think was another one that he was really proud of. The movie didn't do well for the studio because so much money had been spent on it. It was actually a high grossing movie (the second highest of 1959), but because Walt had spent so much money on it, there was no possible way it could return it all back. Yet I think was very proud because, even though he spent most of his time divided on new projects, he still believed in the work of the film, and was hands on about it, such as wanting Phillip to have a more expanded role in the film and writing the fairies dialogue at the cottage himself. Plus for many years afterward, he kept showing clips from the film on his television show, and released many records of the story. Also when he was planning ideas for his Magic Kingdom park at Disney World, he wanted to originally have a Sleeping Beauty dark ride instead of a Snow White one (and a Poppins one instead of Peter Pan, and Sleepy Hollow for Mr Toad before Roy Disney cut costs on those projects and made duplicate rides like the one in California).

To me, I love film each equally for a different character or story idea. My favorite villain is Queen Grimhilde, favorite princess is Cinderella, and favorite hero/prince is Phillip. :p

I think each one is beautiful for their own unique trait, each with a different story, different art style, different characters, and distinct and beautiful music.

Cinderella's got my vote. It has better music (well, better than SB anyway), a greater villainess, a more involving story and a princess whose voice isn't abnormal. The only cons it has is the focus on mice, but, considering Snow White and Sleeping Beauty focus on the dwarves and 3 fairies too much as well, that's not a deciding difference for me.

Although I like Sleeping Beauty, the only things it really has going for it are its animation and its villainess. The romance is a bore, half the movie is fluff and the titular character is completely flat.

Snow White has better animation and music than Cinderella, but I really don't like this film. It spends the entire movie with the dwarfs, until the Prince just pops up in the end for a happy ending. Also, I'm not crazy about the Queen's voice or the fact that her "beauty" as second fairest is restricted by her ugly design. The Hag, on the other hand, is perfectly done without being overdone.

As for Walt, I think he was proudest of Snow White (for obvious reasons). He was probably proud of the animation done for Sleeping Beauty, but recognized that it was a failure story-wise. So I'm guessing Snow White most likely remained his favorite, simply because it was a landmark for his life and his studio.

For me it was a tough choice, but ultimately my vote went to Cinderella. I think the film AS A WHOLE is the best of the Princess/Fairy tale fims.

As for which one do I think Walt liked best, or was most proud of, well, that's easy, it would be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, of course.

I voted for Snow White, as I believe it's the best made Disney film.

The Music is the best, it's animation and Sleeping Beauty's animation is tied, and it's characters are tied with Cinderella. I also really like the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as it feels nostalgic to me.

If by the best, you mean best traditional "fairytale" as in = dream come true, than Cinderella is the best "dream come true" fairy tale.

If by the best, you mean most dangerous and dark film that still has a happy ending... It's a tie. Snow White has more at stake, but Sleeping Beauty is more frightening. Snow White's Queen was more dangerous, but Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent was scarier.

If by the best, you mean which is the most fanciful, elegant, dark, yet magical all at the same time film, Sleeping Beauty is the best. Which I voted for.

Snow White. It was a huge success, it's stood the test of time, historians adore it, and without it, there would be no Walt Disney empire of entertainment.

For these three, I wasn't sure which to pick. As a fairytale, Snow White seems best. As a work of art, Sleeping Beauty seems best, but my fave is Cinderella. Kinda torn between them as a film. I went with Sleeping Beauty because it is the most impessive I think, though Snow White was probably the most impressive for its time; but if you asked me my fave, I'd say Cinderella.

Walt Disney's Best Princess FairyTale Film?

Post by Disney Duster »

It's hard for me to decide this, like so many here, as well. I won't watch all of them close to the same time to decide, either.

I think Sleeping Beauty feels the most like a fairy tale. It has more magic, with 4 fairies and magical fights that have a lot to do with the plot, more romance, which includes the girl wanting a prince, trying to keep the prince (getting her aunts to accept him), and the royal couple dancing to their love song twice, and it emphasizes the elements of a magic kiss of love saving the noble girl trapped in a spell in a tower (the epitomes of fairytales) more than the other films.

However, the question was about what was the better film made out of a fairytale, not which one is the best at being fairytale-like. So, I voted on Cinderella, because the noble girl does the most to make her dream come true, and she earns the good magic that aids her by being good herself. Granted, all the princesses in these films could be said to have good things happen to them because they are good, but Cinderella's film emphasizes it the most and Cinderella seems a little more aware that what she does will effect what happens to her. Plus, Cinderella has the most satisfying happily ever after, I think, partly because the noble girl does more than the others to get that happy ever after.

On the flipside, maybe Cinderella's happy ending isn't as satisfying as the others because Cinderella was awake and able to do more than the others, yet the film concentrated on the mice helping her a lot of the time. In Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, it's about the people who the princess effects, and how they are happy when the princess is happy. In Cinderella, it needs to be more balanced, and the mice tip the balance.

Hm. Well, I voted for Cinderella anyway. With a magical storybook opening and the fairy godmother's magical turn, the film feels more magical in these places than I believe I've felt in the other films' magic moments. The choral music helps a lot. And the title character still did more than the others.

Oh, everyone keeps mentioning the art. Well, Snow White may look like German illustrations, but Cinderella's storybook art turns into the art of the actual scenes. The backgrounds are simplistic and dreamy, like fairy tales themselves. I don't know if it's the 2005 DVD restoration or not, but the pretty colors evoke what I think of when it comes to princess fairy tales. The castle is certainly the most fairytale-like of all, actually rising into the clouds.

It really is a tough descision to make, isn't it ?

I wanted to share the quote from the back cover of the 2003 Sleeping Beauty Special Edition, Here it is:

"Of All The Stirring Legends Of The Triumph Of Good Over Evil, None Has Ever Been So Inspirational To Me As Sleeping Beauty." - Walt Disney

I also remember reading that Cinderella contained Walt Disney's favorite segment of animation. It's the transformation scene where Cinderella's rags turn into that beautiful dress.

Snow White was obviously an amazing accomplishment being the film that started all Disney films but I'd say Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty were better. They are all magical, enchanting and clearly something to be very proud of.

It's Sleeping Beauty for me. It's just so pleasing and wonderful that i just can't help but love it.

And PhiilipFan, Sleeping Beauty has since become the second highest grossing film from 1959. At the time there were many other movies (including Disney's own The Shaggy Dog) which made much more. I think if the public had shown enough interest it could have recovered it's costs (it came close, $5.3 of $6 million was made back), but general audiences just didn't want that kind of a film. The same goes for Darby O'Gill and the Little People and Third Man on the Mountain sadly.

I was just watching the TV and the commercial for the Enchanted DVD came on. It mentioned Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty! Notice there was no mention of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin! The Disney Princess films made during Walt's lifetime must be more popular ? What do you think ?

I think that's just to show the connection between Giselle and the older princesses. She's not really like Ariel or Belle or Jasmine.

Which one do you think was the best ?
Snow White, without question. It's the best Disney fairy tale in terms of story, it has the best villainess of the three and it has the best animation. It's undoubtedly the scariest, and has the most memorable characters, particularly in the Queen/Witch (often imitated, never surpassed) and the dwarfs.
Cinderella is second - it uses more or less the same plot points but adds other elements to the story. The scenes with Lucifer and the mice never seemed to me to exist in the same world, though.
Sleeping Beauty is third here - it tries to add new elements to the Snow White story, but, unlike Cinderella, it fails to add anything that actually works, or adds to the film. While the majority of characters in Cinderella and Snow White manage to show semblance of a personality - only the princes in these respective films are completely bland - the majority of characters in Sleeping Beauty are the 'merest of cyphers'. The fairies are fun but are unable to carry the entire film as they are expected to. The story problems have already been listed countless times on this forum. It's generally praised either for it's style - which I don't think holds together - or its villainess - who exists very much in the shadow of Snow White's Queen.
Which one do you think Walt Disney liked best?
Either Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty - he revealed in interviews that he came to dislike the film, because his other films all seemed to exist in its shadow and he was fed up of it.
Which one do you think Walt was most proud of ?
Despite my second answer, probably Snow White.

Which do I think is the best? Cinderella; it packs the most emotional punch. Snow White's emotions come across as very cloying to me (though the funeral scene is effective). Sleeping Beauty tends to be rather cold in comparison, though I'll take that sort of cold sophistication over pandering. Sleeping Beauty, I think, actually has the best plot of the three, but Cindy tells its story better (in other words, I think it has the best script). The padding in that film isn't as obvious to me as it is in SB, and I think the characters are more interesting. Cindy's also got the strongest set of songs.

Which do I think Walt liked the best? Cinderella again, and not because it's my favorite of these. Walt outright expressed how disappointed he was in Sleeping Beauty, and it seems to me that he eventually grew annoyed with Snow White since it was the film all the others kept getting compared to. I also, personally, see more of Walt's personal touch and experience in Cinderella than in the other two.

Which do I think Walt was most proud of? Well, this to me is a pretty similar question to the previous one. Cinderella, to me, just seems to encapsulate all of Walt's beliefs and views, so I would think he'd be most proud of how that turned out. It's possible that he was more proud of Snow White in terms of its success and achievements, though.

And just about every published review of the film! But yes, thank you, I was trying to remember where I'd read it specifically. 8)

I now have Cinderella on DVD, which I'm yet to find a good enough time for me to just turn off the computer for once and watch it and I'll be getting "Sleeping Beauty" when it comes out later this year on a Platinum Edition (maybe even on Blu-Ray if I'm lucky to get a player) but I've seen neither films for years so I can't really make an honest opinion about them now as my memories of seeing both movies are patchy.

"Snow White" doesn't even need to be mentioned about how great it is, it's basically the movie that made animation into the respected art form it is today after all (and it looks like it would too for 1937)! Though I won't vote just yet, as much as I love "Snow White", I'll watch the other two movies first then make my choice. :)
