Are you guys going to replace ALL your DVDs for Blu ray?

My ps3 is a Blu Ray Player so it upscores all regular DVDs to 1080p with HDMI hook up
SO
I'm not going to replace everything like when VHS went to DVD!
only some things (like sleeping)
BUT
I will first compare quality I have some movies on both but not something epic or grand
If I find that a regular Gone With The Wind DVD looks the same as a Blue ray DVD on the blu ray player it will stop there!
It wont be worth it!

I really think that it would be a waste of money to repurchase your DVDs on Blu-ray. Most Blu-rays do not have any exclusive bonus material and most of the supplements on the Blu-rays are just ported over from the DVD. And since Blu-ray can upscale your DVDs to like-HD quality, it would just be pointless to repurchase them. Unless you feel the need to own the various versions of the film (VHS, multiple DVDs and the Blu-ray/HD-DVD). I think I'll stick with my DVDs until the film gets better treatment on Blu-ray with more bonus material.

I haven't gotten a Blue Ray player yet, can't afford to, but I hope people will start putting their foot down to having to replace their collections every few years. It was understandable with the change from VHS to DVD, but DVD is excellent quality already. I will get Blu Rays of stuff I don't have, once I have the player, but as far as replacing my other DVDs, I will only look at it the way I do a DVD double-dip. It will have to have lots of incentives for me to upgrade. I am still trying to replace my VHS tapes with DVDs. I had hundreds of them and I have hundres of DVDs now! And there's still a lot of stuff that was on VHS that hasn't come to DVD.

Hell, I'm already expecting to have to replace some of my Blu-rays in the future. (Specifically the first two Spider-Man films, X3 and Silent Hill).

The rule is simple. If you like the movie and if you think the value is worth it (improved picture/sound/supplements) then replace. If not, then don't. Nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head.

may be if at least the packaging for blu-ray wasn't too different from DVD people wouldn't really feel that they are starting a WHOLE NEW collection;
which i know sounds stupid, but that would make it less frustrating to think "here i go again". It just seems to soon for people to upgrade again.

I already own a blu-ray player, and i love high-def, but i bought so many
DVDs and spent thousands of dollars on my collection to five to six years start another one.

With the upconvert on the Blu-Ray players you should never have to replace any of your discs that you already own.

Surely a person isn't going to do that!!! I will buy most of the DAC's when they come to Blu-Ray but I am not going out to replace all of my Disney titles in Blu-Ray, unless they come with a special edition that has something I can't live without.

I don't buy my discs for the special stuff anyway, as long as the movie is there intact, in original aspect ratio and the sound is uncompressed and blows me out of the room, then I am a happy camper. Not big on commentary tracks because most of the ones that I have heard are very boring and don't offer anything substantial to watching the movie.

There are some movies that have great commentary tracks, but not enough to make it the one thing that I want before I buy the disc.

I own over 600 DVDs at this point. There is still about 350 on my wish list. I will concentrate on the wishlist first. Replacement will depend on how much I like the film and the reviews on sound/picture improvement.

The only way I'm upgrading to Blu-ray is if I somehow for whatever reason get a Blu-Ray player for my birthday or christmas. Even then I still won't fully upgrade, just random purchases, considering I'm STILL upgrading from VHS

I'll probably upgrade a few titles, when/if they become available.

Whenever I upgrade to Blu-ray later this year I'll probably mostly get newer titles that I don't have on DVD.

Nope. If Blu Ray does become a new standard I will buy new purchases on Blu Ray, but I won't be replacing anything.

I really don't see what the point is. New technology will always be emerging, so you can never really keep up, unless you are loaded. If you are always trying to upgrade you will have purchased a movie on VHS, then DVD, then Blu-Ray, then whatever is next, etc. I don't see myself with a Blu-Ray player for quite a while, so there are no Blu-Rays in my near future. If I do eventually upgrade to a Blu-Ray player, I won't be upgrading my older movies to Blu-Ray, since a Blu-Ray player still plays DVDs.

I doubt I'd be able to replace much of my DVD collection with BluRay even if I wanted to. I doubt many of the titles in my library are likely to surface on BluRay in the near future. From what I can see, BluRay is pretty much limited to blockbusters and and a handful of significant older films; whereas my DVD collection tends towards the more arcane, and includes a lot of TV titles that wouldn't benefit from a high definition release.

In fact, I'm inclined to think that BluRay won't overtake DVD but exist side by side with it for a longish period. I suspect DVD will still be used for minority interest titles and standard definition material for a while yet, with only the big films going HD.

As I see it, you're being "asked" to replace your current DVDs with new DVDs now by most of the major movie studios. Some studios have gotten it down to a fine art.

So there's really no difference between content probably being left off a first-issue DVD because the studio's intention is to double-dip later (ever wonder why Fox dumped the 2 disc Alvin DVD? or wonder about the lacklustre content of the Enchanted DVD release) or content being left off a first-issue DVD because the studio would rather you buy the Blu-ray instead. At least some of the time the content that they held off the regular DVD is reformatted to take advantage of the presentation and interactive opportunities of the hi-def format[s].

In fact, I would say it's less offensive for content being held back for a new format, than a studio just enticing you to buy another release on the same format in the future. And being as Blu-ray players play DVDs (and make them look better - but not as good as native HD) unlike VHS, you don't have to replace anything at all. Every purchase is your own judgement call.

I assume most people will get a HD compatible TV in the next 5-10 years, even if they have a perfectly good, working and even cherished SD TV today. And when you get a HD TV, you'll want a format which take advantage of the display, and Blu-ray is your only option. It's not really some huge conspiracy. Studios could easily stop releasing on SD at all if they wanted to force mass format migration onto people.

I'm quite sure I will not. I still have favourites on laserdisc that I haven't bought on DVD, and even quite a few titles on VHS, but probably not that many favourites of them... Just like I've done before, I intend to keep most of my collection and upgrade a few worthy titles here and there. No panic.

I most certainly am not going to replace my entire collection with Blu-Ray, particularly because: a) many of my DVDs look amazing on my HDTV already, and b) some BDs (Fox, anyone?) actually contain less supplements than the DVD. I only intend on upgrading my Disney animated classics and a few select titles (Harry Potter series, The Wizard of Oz, etc.). With anything else, it'll be down to how much of an overall upgrade there is, particularly in terms of supplements.

I'm only going to replace The Black Cauldron, Sleeping Beauty and Lady and the Tramp for Blu-ray. Those were the DAC that were filmed in a format that was meant to be seen on a larger screen with more detail (Cinemascope and Technirama). I see no point in upgrading classics with minimal design detail (because it was intentional) like Cinderella, Alice, Dumbo, Bambi etc.

If there are given anamorphic enhancements than I will upgrade Hercules, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Happiest Millionaire and The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, The Rocketeer and Hocus Pocus And if Lilo and Stitch ever gets that special edition it will go on my list too.

If the following movies get better editions then I'll upgrade: Hello, Dolly!, The Music Man and Victor/Victoria (which I haven't bought yet but I'm going to this weekend because I can't wait )

It just depends on whether or not DVD is the new VHS and the Blu-Ray disc is the new DVD. But, I'll be buying Sleeping Beauty on Blu-Ray just in case. I don't want to have to deal with another Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...

Any upgrades will be few in number. SW and ST titles will likely get the nod, but any others will be subject to the same criteria I use for DVD double dips.
