Homeward Bound 1 & 2 Rerelease

Post by gardener14 »

There are listings for the release of Homeward Bound 1 & 2 as a combo on several websites such as Buy, Amazon, and DeepDiscount, however they all contain conflicting information.

The release dates are stated as Feb, 5, 10, or 12, 2008. Some sites say it is a two disc sets while others say it is one disc. Some sites say it is full screen while others say it is anamorphic wide screen. Regarding aspect ratio, none of the sites I read discern between the two movies, so I don't know if they are both full screen, widescreen, or one of each like the solo releases were.

Although the dvd of the first movie has only been available as fullscreen p&s until now, it has been available in widescreen on iTunes, but that download can only be viewed on my computer, not my tv.

I would be very interested in purchasing this new release if both movies are widescreen. Can anyone else see discover the truth about this release because I'm confused?

Well if it's like the other new buena vista double features it will be a 2-disc set with the orginal disc, i.e. disc 1 foolscreen & disc 2 widescreen

They are also doing one for The Apple Dumpling Gang

I wonder if the Apple Dumpling Gang 2-pack will lose any extras. Actually, I don't know if their individual releases even have any extras. I've been making due with VHS on that one still and still don't have the sequel in any form.

If there are no losses, I'd be happy to get these two double features.

Thanks. I wouldn't be surprised if the double feature lacks the commentary, as silly as that is since the first releases were single disc and this double feature is supposed to be 2-disc if Amazon is correct. I think that's what happened to the Witch Mountain movies anyway. Still need those too, but I'll get 'em off Ebay separately so I can get the commentary.

The Witch Mountain movies were on one disc with no bonuses. Apple Dumpling gang should have all of the extras (besides commentary on Disc 2 if there will be one). But it may be only 1 DVD.

Also, Disney still doesn't have any plans to release the ORIGINAL Incredible Journey to DVD yet, unfortunately.

Will Apple Dumpling Gang 2 be wide screen or pan & scan? I skipped it the first time bcause of the P&S

I want to know when the sequels and series made for the Disney Channel will be on DVD.

Funny thing, I was at a library and they have a DVD of the Disney Channel's Return to Treasure Island but it's not a Disney DVD. I haven't looked into that one yet...

All of Buena Vista's Two-Movie Collections simply take the two existing discs and package them in a dual-amaray. It's a marketing scheme that gets old DVDs back on the shelves again, while also providing a good price on the movies (I've seen many of them at Wal-Mart for $13.72, making it 6.86 per movie).

It really made no sense for Disney to have the Witch Mountain movies be the one aberration to these cheap re-releases, and only on one disc instead of the existing (and now OOP) two.

Disney Channel made a Return to Treasure Island movie? First I heard of it, it's not even mentioned on UD's page.

It will be P&S because it'll be cheap to just recycle the current copy then try to restore it from scratch.

I remember seeing it as a child...in the mid 1980's I believe. As I recall it was a mini-series, not strictly a movie. What I distinctly remember was the promo in the old Disney Channel Magazine that used to come with the subscription to the channel. The promo and photos had me excited for it, but the show was a disappointment. In hindsight I was probably too young with too short an attention span to appreciate a mini-series at the time.

I think I just found it: http://imdb.com/title/tt0088593/

It doesn't appear to be on dvd from any distributor.

Return to Treasure Island was a 10 episode miniseries that, for some reason, is usually labeled as a Disney Channel Premiere Film.........golly that's a long film ;)

Anyway, when it originally aired on television it was accompanied by "The Making of Disney's Return to Treasure Island" television special. This miniseries was available for a short period of time on VHS in 5 two episode volumes. These tapes go for bookoo bucks now. You might be able to find a bootlegger somewhere who sells the whole series (like all those people who sell "Texas John Slaughter", etc.) on DVD.

::shrugs::

Oh yeah, and there was a 1950s live action feature called "Return to Treasure Island" starring the guy who played in Disney's Treasure Island, but this film was NOT made by Disney.

That would've been "The Adventures of long John Silver" which also starred Robert Newton as Long John Silver, but as you said, it was not made by Disney. I actually saw this in Wal-Mart not too long ago on DVD.

I'm mixed on these two-disk sets Disney is putting out. In a way it's OK as you get a movie and it's sequel in one package, but if you like to store your DVDs chronologically when they were released, it's difficult to do so.

I absolutely love Robert Newton as Long John. Yeah, there was that Adventures of Long John Silver movie, also called Return to Treasure Island, and there was also a TV series that sprung from that one (back in the '50's) starring the same cast. I THINK the non-Disney sequel and the TV series were Australian productions.

I remember the Disney Channel miniseries too, from when I was very young. I think it was too mature for me at the time though. It must not have been as "fun" as the original film. All I remember is that Jim Hawkins was like, in his early twenties (or late teens), or something like that, and at least part of it was about trying to save Long John from the noose. Trial stuff and that sort of thing, if I remember correctly. Though, that could have been just a small part of the mini-series.

One that was released on VHS (maybe that other was too, I don't know) is "Back to Hannibal, the Return of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn", which was also a Disney Channel mini-series from back in the day. I haven't watched it in sometime, but as I recall it was okay, but there were some things I thought odd. For example, Tom Sawyer became a lawyer as an adult, and Huck Finn a writer. From what I remember, it definitely should have been the other way around. I also didn't care for Becky Thatcher being all crabby for half the film. Yeah, I'm not sure if it was a mini-series or a Disney Channel movie, actually, since I have it on a single VHS (maybe it's edited).

I've often wondered how they got away with using the same Long John Silver look Disney had with the same actor in a small studio knock off film. I also wonder what walt thought of them. Newton is by far the best screen pirate of all time. On the new Alastair Sim Christmas Carol DVD they talk about Newton quite a bit and what an undependable drunk he was. Good stuff.

I did see that film on a DVD at the library. I recognized the Silver and Jim Hawkins on the cover. It could have been edited as a feature as many mini series try to do but I bet they had to cut stuff out and as I remember each show was about an hour long. I'll check it out next time I'm there.

I believe Return to Treasure Island was made by British ITV company HTV (now long since defunct). It is available in PAL-land in the near future: see this Amazon.co.uk Listing

I also believe it stars a very SHOUTY Brian Blessed, who no longer so much as acts by SHOUTS VERY LOUDLY and then BOOMS with laughter. He couldn't be more like a cartoon character if he was a cartoon character! People will know SHOUTY Brian Blessed best as the Hawkman in the live action Flash Gordon film.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

The better question is - - where is the charming original: Walt Disney's "The Incredible Journey"?

So, did anyone get these yet and notice any losses/changes from the separate releases? I'm really tempted by the Apple Dumpling Gang double feature, which I saw at Wal-Mart and was very nicely priced (though I forget how much). Wouldn't want to get it if it loses any extras though.

From the back of the case it appears that everything from the first release is in this collection

Well they at least included all the bonuses for the Apple Dumpling Gang. The Incredible journey set still has fullscreen for the first movie.
