Blu-ray Disc Question

Post by bruno_wbt »

I was searching for information about the Enchanted Blu-Ray Disc, and I found that the American version says: All Regions.

So, my question is: Do the Blu-Ray Disc Player have the same region system as the DVD player? Or can you put every DVD or Blu-Ray in the Blu-Ray Player (no matter the region)?

No, there are only 3 regions for Blu-ray, as opposed to 6 for DVD:

A North America, Central America, South America, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia.

B Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

C India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central, and South Asia.

You may also find this useful:

http://bluray.liesinc.net/

It lists which Region A (largely US) discs work on Region B players. As you can see from that list, some Disney titles have been Region Free, others have been locked. The Region coding has been iffy on Blu-ray thus far. It isn't compulsory, but many studios are electing to include it (as opposed to HD DVD, which is pretty much Region Free). Warner, for example, have been releasing all of their Blu-ray Region Free, because they also released the HD DVD, and it was pointless having one Region Locked and the other Free. However, with Warner now Blu-ray devotees, there is a question mark over whether they will start implementing region coding as well.

You may also find that some Blu-ray players are region locker for DVDs as well (i.e. a Region B Blu-ray may only play Region 2/4 DVDs etc).

The US Enchanted is likely to be region locked as the vast majority of Disney Day and Date Blu-Rays are. The European release may be ABC (i.e. all regions).

If you saw it saying All-Regions on Amazon, be aware that they have been wrong in the post.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I bought the 3 Pirates Movies on BluRay from Amazon.

They're All Regions and work fine on my zany Sony BluRay player, and on a friends PS3 just by the by.

So will Enchanted.
So get it from the states.

The only Disney BluRay we bought that didn't work was Haunted Mansion.
But oh well.
As on the back it does clearly say "Region A", so that'll teach me, won't it?

And besides, I just watch the Haunted Mansion DVD on the BluRay
and it upscales it anyway. So it still looks pretty.
Plus, no one cares that Haunted Mansion is on BluRay anyway, as its hardly a whiz-bang example of the technology now is it?

The Pirates movies are, though. People often say "oooh" and "wow" in that order while watching.

And also, just by the by, alot of Warner & Sony BluRays are "All Region",
Sony puts ABC on the back of theirs, while zany old Warner just don't put anything! But they work. 300, Superman and stuff like that.

So totally buy everything from the states.

They're half price compared to the poor dear sad old Australian dollars and you get them at least a month or two before silly Australia even considers releasing them.

Like, you can get Enchanted in March from the states for like $25.

Or you can wait two months later, when poor dear sad old Australia gets it in May, and pay $45!!

No no, I say.

Silly Australia.

So in answer to your question.....

The always reliable http://bluray.liesinc.net/ has confirmed that Enchanted US is REGION LOCKED.

The Region B is available from the UK in April, and as the above post indicated, the Australian is a sucky month later in May. (We are both Region B so go figure). Aside from two of the Pirates films, Disney has given us no indication that any of their new release titles will be anything other than Region locked.

(By the way, the 'poor' Aussie dollar is now trading at 92c to the US dollar i.e. 1 AU$ gets you 92c US, and it has been as high as 94c in recent weeks. That's almost 1:1. Even so, our Blu-rays are ridiculously overpriced here).

Movietyme.com independently check Blueray discs using a UK player and imported discs and then post the results on their blog...
