Enchanted: the References!

Hey there, well I know that they have been dicussed at length in the 2 great Enchanted threads, but I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread that only discusses the references in Enchanted to other Disney films and characters.

going through 60 odd pages to see what people have discovered is a bit tiring and confusing, but I'll udnerstand if any of the mods decides to delete this thread.

For now, I'll start with the obvious ones:

- Julie Andrews is the Narrator

- Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel) is Robert's secretary

- An elevator music-style 'Part of Your World' was playing in the office's lobby as Giselle was looking at the fish in the fish tank

- Paige O'Hara (the voice of Belle) was the woman in the soap opera on tv.

- Judy Kuhn (the singing voice of Pocahontas) was the pregnant woman with kids

- Obvious references: the Slipper (Cinderella), Dragon (sleeping beauty), Poison Apples (Snow White).

So come on let's create a great comprehensive list that will beat the similar feature in the Blue-Ray edition (for those of us who still don't have BR players!)

Giselle's dress looks like it's modeled from Ariel's.
The animals cleaning the apartment ("Happy Working Song") is like "Whistle While You Work".

The way Giselle says "Thank you" throughout the movie could pass for a voicematch to the way Belle says it in the song at the opening of "Beauty & The Beast."

There are a number of musical references throughout the film, but I'm sure someone will fill the blanks in better than I can as I haven't actually seen the movie yet. I've only downloaded a few scenes off Youtube and listened to the soundtrack a couple months ago. And I've had to hear the same clips from the film repeatedly for about 2 months while working at a Disney Store.

During the song "That's How You Know", there are visual references to all of the following:

- Giselle running in the field: Beauty & The Beast (the scene from which was also an homage to "The Sound of Music")
- Giselle and Robert in the boat: 'Kiss The Girl' from "The Little Mermaid".
- Giselle and the little girl in the castle window: not sure what Disney movie moment this is spoofing, but the little girl is wearing a Cinderella dress.
- Giselle giving heart-wreath to birds: Snow White, but it also reminds me of a scene from Sleeping Beauty (which I haven't watched in ages).

I'm sure there are a few other references in that scene as well, but I guess I'm just not as alert to them. They just seem... familiar.

And here's several from Disneykid, who posted in the "part 1" thread:

* The Disney references. Outside of what we already saw in trailers, TV spots, clips, and featurettes, here are the references I spotted for the first time during the film:

- Animated Giselle looks through two sapphires the way Dopey does with diamonds.

- The lobby of Robert's firm plays "Part of Your World" while Giselle admires the aquarium.

- The soap opera Paige O'Hara appears in has "Beauty and the Beast" for its underscoring.

- The Three Caballeros and Fun and Fancy Free play on Edward's hotel TV.

- Morgan has a Cinderella storybook in her room.

- The end credits feature visual references to Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in the Stone, and The Little Mermaid (I think there were a couple more).

- A slew of character names are references, but these I saw already from IMDb. They include Nancy TREMAINE, Robert and Morgan PHILLIP, Mary Ilene Caselotti (the TV news reporter, named after the three Walt princess actresses), Phoebe and Ethan BANKS, and Angela (the character Paige played, probably a reference to her Beauty and the Beast co-star).

- Two bits which may or may not be references that we've seen before in ads: first is Giselle's tumble down the vortex, which may be an Alice in Wonderland reference (if her gown inflated and she had floated instead of fallen, it definitely would've been). The other is Giselle and Robert sliding down the building shingles which could be a Hunchback of Notre Dame reference.

The others:
Narrisa shows Giselle fainted like Maleficent showed Aurora asleep.
Narrisa calls Giselle a "forest rat" like Jafar is calling Aladdin a "street rat".
Giselle walks with a parade in That's How You Know like the parade in Prince Ali.
Robert's statue is in the same pose as Eric's statue Ariel had in her grotto.
Giselle's pink dress is based on Aurora,her wedding dress is based on Cinderella,her light blue dress is based on Snow White,her purple dress is based on Ariel,her flower dress is based on Belle and her yellow dress (in the end) is based on Jasmine.
Giselle is friend to any kind of animal (not just forest cute ones) like Pocahontas.
The wishing well is based on the one from Snow White.
I"ll think of more.

Sleeping Beauty: Susan Sarandon turns into the dragon.

Don't know if the Ogre was making fun of Shrek or not.

No, her song is similar to Snow White's- the notes that she sings into the wishing well during I'm Wishing is the same notes that Giselle hits when she calls out to her animal friends, during True Love's Kiss and before Happy Working Song.

I also thought it was Pumbaa, but someone on Wikipedia said that it was just an "off-model" version.

No,no,she calls them like Aurora (remember how she walked in the forest singing and all the animales showed up?),the notes sounds like Snow White but they way she call them is like Aurora.
The pig is one of the animales in Andalasia (you can see him in the marchandise),he's not Pumbaa,it's like saying that the bluebird is from Snow White,the deer is Bambi or that the squriel and the owls are from Sleeping Beauty.

Edward's dance with Nathaniel as he's singing "True Loves Kiss" is like Gaston with LeFou in "Gaston".

Edward saying "I must find the maiden with that beautiful voice" is most likely a reference to Eric in TLM.

Edward checking his teeth in his sword before the date could be a reference to Gaston who checked his whilst asking Belle to marry him.

Edward and Nathaniel stay at The Grand Duke which is a reference to the character in Cinderella.

There's loads more but I think the wiki list covers most of them.

So is this film just a string of pop cultural spoofs of other Disney films? If so that kind of turns me off. I've been looking forward to this film for years but have been waiting for the DVD. It's not going to be an over done Shrek is it?

I don't think it is over done like Shrek. A lot of these comprasions they are making, I didn't even realize until people started pointing them out after the movie. Now I want to rewatch it. I think you are going to enjoy it.

Don't forget the Italian restaurant called 'Bella Notte". A refence to Lady and the Tramp. But nobody here mentioned it because it's obvious, right?
