Video game high scores

Post by Big Disney Fan »

Why do they have high scores in video games anyway? What's the significance?

Well that is why the high score is on top, you are above the other people, quite literally

Yeah, well, I just ignore the scores and play only to get to the end and defeat the game itself, not other people who played the game before I did. The only thing a score is good for is to (sometimes, but not always) allow you an extra life.

Watch The Last Starfighter and then you'll understand why high scores are critical.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

But why do people feel the need to gloat about high scores? That would sort of be a good way to lose friends, wouldn't it?

High scores should be just for fun. And it doesn't matter how high your score was, but how much you enjoyed the game. It's not something to take seriously.

High scores give you another goal to shoot for. This was especially important in the NES era. Many games, such as Tetris, had no real ending. You couldn't say you "beat the game," but the high score was a benchmark of how good you were.
