The thing is that recently I own multiple editions from some Walt Disney Classics... I late 1999 I purchased some Limited Issue DVD releases. But since that time most of them were re-released again as a 2 disc special edition or platinum edition. Problem is that I simply cant miss the bonus material from the 2 disc editions.
So recently I wond these classics...
2x Pocahontas
2x Little Mermaid
2x Alice in Wonderland
2x Lady and the Tramp
2x The Jungle Book
I gues Im gonna purchase all new Blu-Ray releases again from Snow-White... all over again...
So does anybody of you have the same policy in updating your Disney collection?
I've double-dipped on three Disney films - Dumbo, Alice In Wonderland and Mary Poppins. My criteria are that (a) I really like the film, and (b) I can pick up the new edition cheaply on sale.
I must get around to double-dipping on Make Mine Music, too. I've got the edited R1 version, but I should get the uncut R2 Scandanavian edition at some juncture. That's one where I can justify paying full price (and at least I picked up the R1 cheap at a second-hand DVD store).
Collecting the Alice shorts on the various DVD compilations has entailed a fair bit of multiple ownership as well. I think I've got 4 or 5 copies of Alice's Egg Plant now. Thank goodness it's a great short...

I own three copies of Toy story and Toy Story 2. NO, not all on DVD..........

Non Disney, I double dipped with LOTR - have theatrical & EE of all 3.

I have double dipped on a bunch of Disney DVDs.
The ones that got a 2-Disc Upgrade and I have all the single Disc releases. I will nto give up any of them. I still have some VHS copies but a bunch of them I donated to my nieces old school. I felt good doing that because they were just collecting dust on my shelf and I had no room lol.
I will buy every re-release for Beauty And The Beast.
I've only ever double-dipped on a DVD once, in the case where I had the 2-disc Signature Series version of Gladiator, and purchased the 3-disc Extended Edition. However, I kept both has they have different bonus features and commentaries.
In the case of pretty much any other movie (Disney and non-Disney alike), I've always waited until an acceptably bonus-filled release has been issued, which means I've skipped out on many Disney releases up to now... and will continue doing so until they stop catering exclusively to lazy parents (if that can be believed) and start issuing proper Collector's Editions again. I haven't even bought the last two Pixar films due to this unacceptable practice.
I've double dipped a few times. The main reasons I double dip are if the video transfer is better (non-anamorphic to anamorphic, etc...), or a different cut of the movie is released.
I'm also still slowly re-buying movies that I have on VHS. I'm down to a few now, but I try to wait on sale prices before double dipping on these.

What is it that you are missing?
That is my advice to you.
I really only care about the motion picture on the disc rather than extras. The only double dipping I'll be doing is Blu Ray - have prestine Disney picture and sound!

Blu-ray is a long way from taking over DVD, and its still in a "war" with HD DVD right now.
However I have thought about the high def formats and buying DVDs. I seriously doubt that I'll replace my whole collection. Probably just a few select titles, and then buy new releases in HD DVD and/or Blu-ray.
I have yet to double dip on a DVD title. Since I started with the Platinum Line I haven't had the opportunity.
I probably will double-dip with the Blu-Ray Sleeping Beauty when I have the proper equipment to play it. (When that will be, I dunno.)
I'm hoping that Disney won't be too hasty about putting their Blu-Ray titles "back into the vault" since people are still Blu-Ray equipment deprived like me.
I usually only double dip when a better looking transfer is involved. although I haven't had to worry about that yet. I didn't already own any of the platinum's on dvd before they re released them. I think the only one Ive double dipped on was toy story. I triple dipped on that one actually. the first double dip was a no brainer, considering I was going from vhs to dvd. the ultimate toy box, again, a no brainer, as its arguably the most jam packed boxed set for a movie ever released. the 10th anniversary one, I could have lived without I guess, but I wasnt about to miss the handful of new extras, as well as the higher bit rate transfer.
I'll be double dipping for every movie I own on dvd for an HD format when the time comes though, no doubt.
double dipping has never really been an issue for me. untill now that is. because I'm still trying to add to my collection, its still pretty small. I'm still missing the fantasia movies, beauty and the beast, hercules, hunchback, and jungle book to name a few. my only fear is that it wont be too long before they are released. if its any more than 3 years I'm okay with it. but I'm not a very patient guy, if there's no guarantee any of these are coming soon, then I almost Have to pick it up when I get the chance.

(Commenting on the headline of this thread) Remember, "double-dipping" isn't something that just "happens" - it must be considered an active choice on your part.
I double-dipped once or more on probably most of the "animated classics" years ago, but I haven't really felt like doing it a lot lately.
I've double-dipped on Alice in Wonderland, Anastasia (both DVDs), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (DVD to HD-DVD), Immortal Beloved (DVD to Blu-ray)...
I generally don't double-dip unless it's to HD (whichever format), or the newest version has extras the original didn't have (like Alice's ME over the GC version). I'm fairly good at guessing which movies I like will have a better version down the road (like with Home Alone vs. Home Alone FFE last year).

True, but I think Blue-ray is winning beause I see more releases of that then HD DVD. Walmart now has it's own sectionf or Blue-ray and a little one for HD DVDs. I think this stinks because I do not have a Blue-ray Player so what would be the point in buying the Blue-ray disc of Beauty and the Beast?
I have 4 of them, 3 for 2 classics, and 1 for the triple.
1. Jungle Book, both 1991 VHS & the 2007 Plantium Edition DVD
2. Toy Story, 1996 VHS, 2000 VHS & 2001 VHS (which is just another 2000 VHS)
3. Great Mouse Detective, both the 1992 VHS & the 2002 DVD
4. The Lion King, both the 1995 VHS & the 2003 Plantium Edition DVD

I dont double dip because I know better to wait around for a better version to come along...least I wait around hoping for a better version to come around. I only get the two-disc editions of certain features. This may end however in the spring of next year because I will be getting the new edition of The Aristocats which will be one disc.
I will probably end up double dipping when they rerelease Beauty and the Beast as well as The Lion King on the PE line.

Most stores like Wal-Mart and Target have a bigger Blu-ray section. Its true that Blu-ray discs are selling better than HD DVD, but their sales are still very little compared to DVDs. This "war" can still go either way. I think 2008/2009 will be the deciding year(s). If one format isn't a clear winner by then I think both will remain and combo players will eventually solve the problem of having 2 formats.
I keep buying DVDs lately and saying to myself, "I'd love to get the high def version of that." I was planning to get a PS3 sometime in 2008 anyway, and with the falling prices of HD DVD I might just pickup both formats. With falling prices its really getting hard to say no to the high def versions in my opinion.
I think the only Disney stuff I've double-dipped was Toy Story 1 & 2.
1. First I got the "Toy Story 2 Pack" because that was the only version of the films I could find at the time.
2. Then I got the super-awesome 2-disc sets for each movie 'cause it's an obvious upgrade.
3. Then the other day I found the Ultimate Toy Box used for $20 that I couldn't say no to.
But other than that I don't like to double-dip. I mean, I might do it for some of my favorites like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Little Mermaid. Also, the only reason I haven't bought Hercules yet is because I'm waiting for it to get a (much deserved) better release.
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.
