An oddity with the UK Pixar DVDs...

Post by Jules »

Quite trivial really, but baffling nonetheless. I just took advantage of the Disney BOGOF offer and bought all the Pixar films excepting 'Monsters, Inc.' Curiously, I've noticed that no 'Disney DVD' logo adorns the cover art of any UK Pixar release. Instead, you get the standard 'DVD Video' logo. Moreover, before the films, you get no animated 'Disney DVD' logo either. Most confusing is the ommission of the usual animated "Walt Disney Home Entertainment" logo at the start of the discs.

In fact, the only things bearing the Disney name are a small part of the cover art ('Disney' or 'Walt Disney Pictures Presents'), the opening logo of the films, and perhaps a couple of previews.

What do you guys think? Is there any logical explanation for this?

BTW, the UK single-disc 'A Bug's Life' is really weird. Not only does it look like a really old release, but the back of the cover art has some very horrid looking fonts and almost bad printing quality, and *gasp* the DVD is double-sided. This is the first one I've seen for a Disney film.

One last thing, 'A Bug's Life's cover art says 'Touchstone Home Video' at the bottom. Weird or what?

The Dutch versions all have the normal DVD-logo too... As well as (at least) The Australian SE's of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

One more thing. I watched 'Toy Story 2' earlier today, and I was positive there was a fart joke thrown in somewhere, involving the prospector. Strangely, I encountered no such joke.

Have I gone crackers or has something been cut? (Not that I like fart jokes, but I'm kinda worried...)

Same goes with 'a bug's life'. I thought that in one of the outtakes in the end credits there was a fart joke with one of the woodlice. Again, it was not there. I wasn't dreaming this time though, as I found the joke under the bonus feature entitled 'Alternate Outtakes'. But why wasn't it in the film? I'm almost sure I remember seeing it in the film.

the fart joke comes up during the outtakes that roll over the credits at the end of the film

I already said it does not appear in the outtakes at the end of the film. Instead, you can see it in the "Alternate Outtakes" bonus feature.

What about Toy Story 2?

New Question:

I just watched the Region 2 Finding Nemo. Are there other people out there who are not impressed with the video quality? It never seemed sharp enough, and looked oddly pixelated, even at a distance. To make matters worse, fast movements (such as the moving camera while Nemo is riding the manta ray for school) seem to create 'blocky' effects on the image. At worst, the image looked fuzzy.

The worst thing I saw was when there was a shot of the water at Sidney (near the buoy with the seagulls) and the picture suddenly got very grainy! It makes no sense. The DVD supposedly presents Finding Nemo direct from the digital source. How can such anomalies (thick grain) occur?

I would appreciate any (meaty) replies.

You must have a bad copy, or something. I have the region 2 (dutch) version, and I haven't noticed any of those things. I have a good eye for those things, most of the time. So I should've noticed it, I guess.

That's worrying. But in what ways can it be a bad copy? It's a legit UK Disney DVD with hologram. Mind you, it doesn't look that bad ... just not what I'd expect from a THX-certified disc, especially in comparison to other Pixar DVDs. The difference is not ultra-drastic, but still substantial, especially on my PC 19" LCD monitor.

I took some screenshots from my DVD.

Category A

These pictures looks almost normal, but note the slightly jagged edges on characters. I know these may be some compression artefacts, but unless I am mistaken, compression artefacts don't usually look this way (they usually blend more smoothly).

Don't forget that they are very difficult to spot. Look carefully. If you don't see them, then oh well ... go to the next category.

Category B

These screenshots are basically plagued with random visual noise. Some seem to have grain. Others appear to have an excess of compression artefacts on the entire image.

Category C

These are the worst pics, taken during fast movement. Although digital media is naturally susceptible to blocky visuals during such movement, I expect it to be kept at a minimum on a supposedly state-of-the-art DVD release.

The last three look especially horrible, don't they? :(
